Got out at the crack of 10 today to fish a new spot, not expecting much at this hour. Scattered birds and slightly rough surf. Rods are bending here and there--very promising.

Start casting A27's and nothing doing. Others around me are hooking up, which wouldn't be so alarming if I was doing the same.

It was turning out to be one of those frustrating days, with just 3 fish, compared to everybody's 15-40. Don't think I was doing anything wrong--just pissed off the Fishing Gods somehow?

As I was walking down the beach to the car, I stop and talk to the BassMan (I made that nickname up for him as I watched him catch fish after fish). I ask him if anybody was catching under all of the birds hovering over the beach to the left, 5-10 yds from shore. He says it happens everyday during low tide. Sand eels get trapped inside the bar and get picked off by birds. Lightbulb starts to light up dimly.

Go to the area and wade out to the bar. Cast as far as I can, reeling in until my jig (A17 now) is about 5 yards away. I get slammed, but miss the fish.

Lightbulb goes on brightly:

What if the bait is stacked up on the other side of the bar, being massacred by fish?

I soft cast about 10 yards out, crank slowly, Bamm!!!!! Pulls a little drag. Doubleheader, with one possibly a keeper. He dropped off as I lifted the leader.

Non-stop action on just about every cast after that. Left the beach happy after about 25 bass. No size, but a lot of fun. And a valuable lesson learned.

Hope my new friends, Chris and Ray, did well after I left.

I too learned the hard way, that is you don't always gotta cast far. Sometimes they are right at your feet. Great job on reporting and awesome day of fishing upup

Any thought as to how much longer we have in teh fall run. I know there is supposed to be some colder weather moving in this weekend. Does that spell the end for the season or is there still tme? Been out the past two weekends without a ton of success but really enjoyed my time out there. Would love to get out at least one more time and hopefully bend the rod again..... been on a skunk for quite some time now. I really want to get good at this surf fishing thing, proving to be a lot harder than I thought!

that was me you walked up on yesterday morning and thanks for the nickname i kind of like i ended up with 60 fish total for the day.. im glad i could help and its great that you figured it out all off my fish were on the ocean side of the outer bar so i would just slowly drag my tin and teaser up it and wam! if you reeled to fast you would get nothing, they were all stacked on the side of the outer bars..what a great day my arms are so sore right

End is near

Seals and herring and rats looks like its coming to the end. I also saw whales nice day the 20 fish or so didn't hurt 2 double headers. If you find them they r thick. Saw a lot of people not hooking up and understand the frustration but you need to realize its not luck much skill is involved. I hear it must have been your lucky day I say no just dialed in. You can only catch what's there jay remember that.
