For the first time in over 2 years, I am finally seeing normal July fishing. Nothing spectacular, but I can finally go down in the evening and actually expect to catch a fish or two. (Well, not last night...went down after the storm we never actually got passed...but a few minutes of seeing horizontal lightning stretching all across the Hamptons persuaded me that maybe its better to stay alive than catch a fish.)Best of all, there are weakfish 4 tonight, all released. Nothing great, but any weakfish is better than the usual none. The fish are all "cookie cutters"- blues are about 1 lb, the weaks all appear to be 18" clones, the most common size in my area. Typically, as in years past, the weaks don't show up every night....maybe once a week, always on incoming evening tides. Crabs aren't so good this week, but I'm glad to see small ones...a good sign for the next few weeks.
