I didn't feel so good yesterday, so I sent an email out late in the day that I would not be in on Thursday.

Got out this morning at dawn and headed over to Port Jeff to look for some bass. Trolled the drops and landed a couple of cocktail blues then headed to the flats for some fluke.

Nailed about 5 shorts then a 22.5" keeper. That's when I noticed the boiling yellow eyed devils a few hundred yards to my north. At fist I thought they might be bass, but as I got closer I could see that they were blues. They were not (yet) crashing the surface.

I went over and tried to get underneath them on the periphery, but no dice. Those devils were slamming BIG time. At a few points there was an acre of boiling water. So I figured 'what the hell' and grabbed another pole and started tossing a plug. I was hoping for a large chomper.

I caught a 4-5 pounder almost every cast then BAM! I really thought I had a big one. It pulled deep and hard. It took drag then I battled it in towards the boat then I saw what it was. Two yellow devils grabbed my lure, one on each treble hook. Not the brightest of fish. Both fish appeared to be about 5 pounds. Lots of fun on the light pole I was using.

Headed back to Smithtown Bay and caught a few quality 'just short' fluke by Crane's then headed in towards the cans.

Non stop action on the fluke there and TONS of spearing in the water. Find the spearing and fluke were underneath.

At about noontime I figured I should go home to walk the dog. Stinks that my fishing buddy is too old to come out on sunny warm days, but it is what it is.

I docked the boat and went home figuring that I would take him for a quick walk then go back out to the insane bite that I left.

He was so happy to see me (acted like a much younger dog for a change) I decided to take him with me and just scrub down the boat and clean my keeper instead of going back out.

A thunderhead formed just to the south and it looked (and sounded) like a storm was close. In hindsight it was a good call to not go back out because on my way home it poured and we heard numerous thunder claps.

There was a lot of debris in the water, and I noticed a few BIG logs floating around; be careful.

All in all a great day; beautiful weather (for the most part). About a dozen + blues and pretty close to 50 fluke, with one keeper.

I feel much better now.

big log, about 12'' long

22.5" keeper
