Launched out of Port Jefferson around 1 PM after taking care of some last minute boat tasks and fueling up (ouch).

First trip of the season always brings a little performance anxiety (regarding the boat) wondering if everything will work or not. Fortunately, launch through retrailering went flawlessly. She may be 24 years old, but shes still a damn reliable boat.

So, the report:

Started at buoy 11 for a slow drift on the high tide approaching slack. No speed to the drift, water was like glass. Hopped over to Buoy 9 and set up in 12' of water. As the wind switched to SSW the drift improved but still saw no action. Thought I had a peck or two, but nothing definitive. On the second drift with the wind at 1.2kn had a good strike and lifted a nice 17.5" fluke. Covered the area a few more times but that was it. On the way back to Port Jeff I tried the shoal again and within minutes had a heavy strike and set. As soon as I lifted it was obviously not a fluke as it swam to the side. Lifted out a nice, healthy looking 20" striper.

The wind was starting to pick up an it got a bit chilly so I headed back in. The only casuality today was a rusted out trailer fender thankfully.

Both fish were caught on naked fluke sandwiches.

Naked fluke sandwich. Yup. No teasers, no feathers, no mayo.
