Well, its been a crappy season so far. Either I miss the action by a day or two, or find that there's been no action anyway. All I had to show for this entire year were 2 or 3 small schoolie bass and an equal number of small bluefish that spit the hook. So while I was excited by the rumors that bass were still in the creeks, something I've never heard of for July, I wasn't expecting much. So after a few evenings of the usual bad luck, I woke up yesterday (July 4th) at dawn and decided what the hell...try a few casts. So I got down to the channel...still, buggy as all hell, no fish. I decide after a few minutes that its time to go to back to bed. But....may as well check out the back end in the creek...maybe there's at least a little breeze. So I go back...see some bunker jumping. Maybe I can snag 1 or 2 for later...I was using my light oufit, 10lb test with a 1 oz Krocodile...so first cast, I hook up....but no snagged bunker ever went on a long run like this!!! All I could do was stand there and watch line peel off the reel. After the run, it was give and take for a minute or so, then I worked it in...fish was pretty exhausted....turned out to be a bass, 36" long, 17 lbs! Had a whole bunker and about a half dozen calico crabs in its fat belly...what a way to end a dry spell!

bass and the rod I caught it on

I''m happy!

Nice catch up!

Next time have that bunker snag at the ready, I bet if you snagged some bunker and live-lined them, could have had some more fish like the one you landed on a lure.

I was intending to use my krocodile as a bunker snag...its been quite servicable in the past for that...As it is, after I got the lure out of its throat- it was that deep- made a mess of my hands getting it out...but I was too excited to feel any pain, or be logical enough to just change the lure...I kept trying for a while...no snagged bunker, no more hits, lots of weed though because dead low was just changing to beginning of incoming...but I'll pick up a snag this week.
