Report location New York > Montauk > ROSIE!! COD OFF BLOCK ISLE!!
Fishing method Boat
« Previous Report Next Report »

I was origionally scheduled for the sunday trip on the ROSIE, but the trip got blown out. Instead, I jumped on yesterday. Lots of familiar faces and good fishermen. We left the dock 3am, got over to the grounds south of Block Island about 5:45am. Most everyone started fishing baits on a standard hi-lo rigs, 7/0 bait hooks and chartruse jelly's. No real action until the sun came up, I switched to a 10oz hammered jig and it was slam time. Capt James yelled from the top deck we were over a 40ft thick school of cod and for the next 3 hours fish flew all over the boat, by 9:30 am it was all over. The rest of the day was a slow pick. We made a few moved to find more cod, but by noon everyone had enough, headed back early. I finished the day with 14 keeper cod and 1 ling. My buddy Big Pat fishing in the stren had his usual great day, 12 keepers with 2 big guys. All totaled, 300 for the boat, really nice that the cod fishing is back locally. It was good for me to get out fishing yesterday, I need to practice up for my charter trip with Rob Togilator and his sharpie crew on 3/8/09 on the Bluefin. Cod fishing is hot, go get some!!!! ......Good luck, Kevin R

COD

Hi Mike, By your avatar, you hit them good too....I'm might be on the ROSIE on 2/23/09 if the weather cooperates. Yea, we hit em pretty good, they were very healthy fish, not real long but very fat. You know Capt. James always find fish if they are there, its always comfortable fishing with the ROSIE. Good luck, KR

Had a blass and will be back

Always nice fishing with you Kevin and I have a great picture of yours that I will be posting later. It appears that the bow boys did better than the stern boys Tuesday and I must say "much respect and big ups to anyone who will brave cold spay and wind in the face for a chance at a big one this time of year". Increasingly, I find myself choosing the stern, port or starboard section of the boats unlike when I was young and gung ho for trophy fish.

You are right Squirt sure can find fish. I was joking with Squirt’s brother Freddy during a break in the action and I told him I think that you and your brother could find fish in a bathtub of fresh water and he replied "that's right, I'm sure we could and our sons would be right there competing with us". Anyway, good luck on your charter Kevin, do I hear a $50.00 a man pool? Money on the line will always take the "laid back" out of a charter, OYEAH.

If you do not measure your fish, the state will provide a man with a gun to do it for you.

The crew is almost all here!

We just need Rob, and his other friend whose name I do not know just yet, to post and our March 8 crew is all here, lol Shades

Kevin, Rob told me you were coming, I wanted to send you a PM to thank you for joining us on the trip but forgot, sorry! I am happy to see you had a great day, it truly is one amazing, unforgettable bite right now up. Let's hope it lasts, at least through most of march anyway, lol!
