Although Springtime finally paid a long overdue visit to the Noreast this weekend, South Florida has been enjoying the Spring run for a few weeks now, with plenty of sails, Kings, mahi, blackfin and other pelagics passing through daily. The wind and the current dictate the relative level of success.

My wife and I are spending the weekend on the new Jillybird IV which is based in Key Biscayne for the winter. We’ll be taking her up north at the end of May. Our son, Capt. Wylie, and his buddy Che, took us out yesterday when Capt. Wylie had a day off from his now busy charter schedule.

Not much north current but nice blue water made for a slow bite on the kites. We found the mahi to make our day, nailing many, including a nice cow, along with a big cero, and had a big hammerhead cut us off after playing with our baits in the spread for 15 minutes. They are the most cautious eaters before they commit but they nearly always commit if you are patient.

The day before was a much better bite and Capt. Wylie gave his charter, a dad from Connecticut and his two young boys, 11 and 13, a trip to remember, despite the rough seas, with each of the boys catching their own sails.

Today’s trip had south current which is never a good thing and a slow bite. Tomorrow brings blowout winds so we’ll got to the freshwater Everglades and catch some bucketmouths.

This is what it’s all about!

A tasty catch
