What a night to remember! It began with picking up some live eels to sling later in the evening. While I primarily use artificial lures, this year I have intentionally focused on using live eels a lot more in a few areas that I know hold big fish. Lots of bunker have been present and in recent weeks my expectation level for connecting with a good fish has been very high. After starting in one spot we decided to move to another area. Soon after positioning ourselves where we like to be at a certain stage of the tide, I carefully selected a good-sized eel. After making at least 15 casts, the next cast proved to be a cast I would remember for a long time! Typically, I get a tap or two, then I drop the rod tip to set the hook several times to ensure a solid hook-up. However, on this cast there was no tap, it was a solid thug. As I set the hook it came to the surface with with a violent eruption. After two good runs I started to make up some ground on it. Around 8-10 minutes later and doing everything I could to not let nearby anglers know I was into a good fish, I saw its fin come up and then as I got her closer, I caught my first glimpse of her. All I could say to myself was don't lose this one - a number of years ago I lost a 50 lb plus fish in close to the shore. When I finally pulled her up on the beach I was overcome with a feeling of extreme satisfaction and excitement! It's a night like this that fuels this wonderful/crazy addiction called surfcasting! BTW - it was the only fish of the night. Enjoy the pics below.
