What is the best month to fish plum gut and the race for bass?I'm planning a trip and would like to optimise my chances at a big one. Thanks

Fish move in and out of the area all season long, but If I had to pick one month I would say from Mid Sept. to mid Oct.

I've done the Race in July, August, and early Oct. We've caught big (25+ lbs) in all of those months. I've only had 1 disappointing trip, in July, that got us only 1 small keeper and a few shorts, and my son went once in late Sept. and got the same results....but I think big bass are a reasonable possibility all season.

100% for the bigger fish, June moon in Orient was responsible for my first 50 and the first time I ever saw 40lb bass one after another for an entire tide.

If you are looking for a big fish the gut doesn't even exist... For me I always liked the sluiceway personally when looking for a monster.

I love fishing the Sluiceway as well though the gut does produce some nice fish too. Around the June moon has always been my favorite and then again aroudn the moon in late September/early October.

If I wanted a fish of a lifetime(not a bunch of 30#) I'd call Rochetta and ask to go to the sluiceway on the dates he picks. You wont land many fish and you may get skunked. But the big ones live in the sluiceway.

Here are my picks:

Late May - June
Bigger fish in July if you know where to go
Avoid the heatwave weeks usually in Aug.
Sept. is OK, but a lot of Blues.

But my first choice would be in June a couple days off the moon.
For large(over 40) I would fish the sluice and race, not the gut.

Biggest stripers I have ever seen came out of the sluiceway, not just one, but many.
