Not that I am superstitious, but I have a general question for you all.
My buddy and I decided to go jigging for striped bass on the brooklyn VI yesterday, and after a miserable day of fishing I see one of the guys grab a banana out of his bag and eat it on the ride in. Nobody said a thing.
A little background info about me... I normally fish NJ boats, and have seen mates, captains and passengers go crazy when a customer brings a banana on the ship. Is this no banana rule a NJ thing or just specific to certain areas? Like I said, I do not believe in that type of thing, but I would never bring a banana on board to avoid any conflict etc...
With this said, the captain drove around all day and worked hard to find the stripers. Tons of birds in the water, and besides some blue fish and a handful of keeper stripers there was not much going on (i never count short action as good fishing). He made several announcements saying there was life under the boat, and after the drift an entire boat without a bite. Really odd. Last night, I look at the other boats on my Facebook feed, and they all did well. One of which was in the same area all day with us.
I am chalking this up to the guy with the banana. LOL
I would love to hear your thoughts on this superstition, and any background info on this would be interesting.
PS. In no way is this a knock on the brooklyn vi which is a fine boat, and has limited me out on the last 3 trips I have taken.
That's why it's called fishing. I don't bring bananas on my boat but don't feel the need to eat one at sea. That rule doesn't apply to party boats anyway. I fished in a shark tournament with an old timer and and his grandson and myself. The old timer had diabetes and was wheel chair bound, we had to lift him on the boat but it was his boat. At lunch time he would always eat a banana with his sandwich. Long story short, we cashed a 15,000 check and a brown paper bag with 10 grand, so I don't know. Also landed 3 giant tuna on that boat with the same routine.

All I know is if I were wearing a Banana Republic shirt and some mate sees it, grabs a knife and cuts off the logo (I read that happening in a different link!) he'd end up going for a swim, but that'll never happen, I don't shop there, too expensive.
