KUDOS to "Johnny Steiger." a local pinhooker that fishes out of JBay - first for the capture, then super-carefully transporting it to a local tackle shop for weighing - and then and most of all, for returning the fish to the water, alive and kicking!

The brute weighed exactly 22lbs and was (and still is!) 33 inches long. I am told that it gave Johnny the fight of a lifetime, running sideways like a bass and then bulldogging straight to the bottom twice, before being carefully netted.

Word is that NYS will not recognize this fish as a new State record, as it was caught outside the Recreational season, and that the LIF has refused to enter it into its "Dream Boat" contest - for the same reason.

Whatever, because in any case, it is truly a fish of a lifetime! ! !

She's still swimming out there somewhere . . . might get caught again, maybe from a certain blue-over-white Shamrock.

One can only hope.

I think Johnny should go play the number "2233" and soon too, while the Karma is still strong!

Crazy how people start rumors, at a local bait Nd tackle shop the word was that he kept it and was trying to keep it alive for opening day so he could enter in the tournament, but because he pinhooked it was illegal, and that he was in a lot of trouble. Stupid people make up these stories for no damn reason.

Doormats what the guys at the local b&T told you is not true the guy had intentions of releasing the fish as soon as he caught it. Once he had a picture and official weight which is what he did. Not sure where you guys at the local b&t got their info. from. As for getting in alot of trouble again totally untrue as he has a commercial license and for them the blackfish are in season so he would not get in trouble. Guy got a fish of a lifetime got a picture and weight and released the great fish. Let's not start stuff about what guys in local shops are saying.

Yes the weight 22 lbs. and length 33" was official not sure they got the girth as you can see in the pic he was very careful with the fish. Notice there are no fingers or hands in the gill plate or mouth. Basically cradled the fish so it didn't get hurt. When they caught it they could have used a berkley but again didn't want to put the hook into the gill or mouth.

Was it caught on a calico with its claws off or on?

Seriously tho. Was it caught in the bay or ocean. People are confused...

Way to go Johnny-bluefish! I've fished with Johnny is the past and he is a good guy and fisherman and would never do anything like that.

kudos on the release!
