Anyone here ever try surf fishing with a Potatoe Launcher? I built one the other day for kicks and the first thing I thought of was, wholly crap, I could cast a mile with that thing. So I tied a 2oz weight to a 10# spinner, after loading the gun I just dropped the weight down the barrel and flipped the bail and let it rip. My first and ony attempt emptied 3/4 of the spool, it must have gone over 150 yards. I've searched the internet to find more info on the subject but there's almost nothing available on. Am I on to something here? What if I bore a hole in the potatoe for the hook and weight? What if I hollow it out, cap it, and stuff it with chum etc. I can't wait until next summer to give it a try.

One of my buddies and I were thinking about building one to launch half a bunker to the outer bars... I guess it would be feasible!

Another idea is a remote controlled helicopter with a hook and release solenoid and a large scale remote control boat with outriggers...

I guess the winter really is setting in!

I agree, it's way to soon for cabin fever!

Wait..it's going to get worse. The Hot Babe Thread really helped last year to keep this stuff to a minimum.....

I don't much care for the hot babe thread, if I want to look at girls, this will not be where I start looking...
Hot new reels, now that's a different story.

As scary as it may sound, I want the details on how to build one of these "utensils". Who knows, it may be listed in the required equipment for your beach permit. ROFL.. Smile

Here's the link I used http://www.mshamash.com/spud/spudgun1.html
Just curious, what's the distance casting record these days? Yesterday I carved out an Idhoe spud and stuffed it with a 2oz weight and still had room for a hook, bait, and chum. Then I capped it with a thin slice of potatoe and a couple tooth picks it flew great. The only other mention I found on the internet for this as a fishing tool was to spread chum.
My intent is not to break it out on a crouded bass meca like Montauk on a quiet night. I see myself in a beach chair on a nice day on a secluded beach with a cold one chilling out.

If surf fishermen start carrying potatoe guns then its only fair if boats are sufficiently armed as well.

I fully suspect a fishermen's WMD arms race will soon break out because of this thread.

This one is too good to let go...A spud-launcher arms race!!! I LOVE it!!!!

While visiting in Florida, I watched a couple of locals inflate a kitchen garbage bag and let it drift out for several hundred yards.
I suppose that would leave an awful lot of plastic in the ocean, though.
