I was conducting some business today with the DEC for our fishing club and I needed to go on there webpage and I came across that there were some recent changes in the Recreational Saltwater Fishing Regulations-
Saltwater Fishing Regulations - Recreational
Important News
• The daily possession limit for weakfish is reduced to 1 (one) fish.
• The daily possession limit for Atlantic cod taken by recreational anglers is reduced to 10 fish. Anglers fishing on board federally permitted party or charter boats may possess any number.
• The minimum size limit for haddock is reduced to 18 inches.

I had no idea about these changes, especially regarding the weakfish did I miss something or has this been announced anywhere? If so does the DEC have any responsibility to notify fisherman?

Shouldn't they be responsible? They are willing to take our money for a license and we had to supply them with an address to send the license. Why couldn't they send out a mailing to all people that paid for a license informing them of us of these changes?

These type of things just don't make sense... ;-/

Weakfish

Hey Stink, Don't you think you are asking just a little too much, BOY YOU WANT EVERYTHING !! ToungueToungueToungue

I check the regs once a month, not the one on Noreast, but the NYS site. I didn't see it the last I checked, so it must have just happened, or I missed it.

I print them out and keep a current copy on the boat at all times.

The change for weakfish happened at the ASMFC level the end of last year, and I know NJ and other states implemented it awhile ago. ASMFC found NC out of compliance on Weakfish back in May, that is how long it has been in effect. Probably just took DEC a while to enact the change for NY, but it should not be a surprise since it has been talked about since the ASMFC voted for the change back in October/November of last year.

Here is a link to the ASMFC Press Release from November 5, 2009

If you have been following this board, it has been talked about for a while now. All of the ASMFC materials are posted right here.

This was discussed at the November MRAC meeting, and the emergency rule-making procedure followed. This is probably the final rule.

And if you'd like some good advice, don't count on the NYDEC website to get your saltwater regs from.. It's better now than it's ever been, and it is still undependable.
