My friends and I (about 6 of us) are thinking of chipping in on a boat, just to get out onto the Bay on our own time. Not a lot of money in the pot though, so I was wondering what the most cost-effective way to get out onto the water was. It probably would not need to hold all of us at one time, just looking for some advice. Thanks.

we used to do it in 20 foot skiffs with small outboards

two 3 guys max

there used to be a skiff rental place in jamica bay they may be gone

but a rig similar to a skiff rental would fit the bill for one two or even three guys within the confines of the bay

contact mojoe here on nor east he runs a nice small rig in the bay
great guy always willing to help and is doing exactly what you are looking to do

Hey buddy I am a local and have been fishing Jamaica bay since I was 6 in everything from skiffs to 50 foot downeasters if u want to stay in the bay a skiff will do I suggest a 20 ft mako they draft shallow enough to fish back bays yet handle well enough to run outside I have personally fished mine as far as 17 fathoms and cholera banks if u look on craigslist u will see that u can get a lot of boat these days for what u will pay for a 16 ft skiff w a small motor just my two cents but I know the area u want to fish very well

Wed used to fish from 16 foot skiffs with a 10 HP motor rented from Canarsie pier.

a 16 to 20 is fine
maybe bayend skiffs were 16 its been a long time

but they are a great platform economical platform for fishing the bay with 2 or 3 guys

easy on fuel
not to bad to store
no fancy electronics needed

just pure old school fishing

channel edges
ranges
bridge and pier abutments

man the memories
from silver hole to the jetty to nortons point
that was my realm with my 15 hp scoot Atwater outboard a six gallon gas tank
on that bay end skiff
a jig, a hook and a sinker
bag of spearing
dozen worms or a clam
2 rods
net
and lunch and gone for the day everyday

Boat

Dagger, Capt. Tony and Capt. Joe are correct and we always have a great time on the MoJoe. up All you have to do is check out the pictures and the video's. ToungueToungue Fishing on the MoJoe, all species have been caught, Flounder, Fluke, Striped Bass, Blue fish, Weak fish, Sea Bass, Black fish Shades and even the hard to catch, ROCKIN' ROBINS!!!!Wink
I have just this to say, if it is a small skiff, don't expect heading out past Breezy any time soon and keep an eye on the weather at all times, especially the wind. Finger JUST BE CAREFUL!! As for the electronics, a FF should be good enough but you can also get a combo GPS/FF, Joe has a Garmin FF on the MoJoe.
Capt. Tony, the Silver Hole brings back nice Flounder memories. upup

Yes George

I have a lot of find memories
In a skiff

Never had a piece of electronics
Just a hand held compass

I knew the Chanel edges by heart
When the fish would be on the mpb
Or any of the bridges

Flounder holes by rudimentary ranges

No fuss no muss
No Internet reports

Just got up everyday
Looked out the window and if conditions permitted
Went fishing

Nothing tells you what to expect for the day like the conditions 80% of the time. Other 20% is up to the fish to decide.
