I've been lurking through all the plug building posts for weeks now. Finally swam my first plug last night. A black, 2.25oz, 7" Needle. Thanks for all who post here, the info has been very helpfull.

Nope, this one actually worked lol. The plug did well except an angry Bluefish took it down to Davy Jone's lockerReally. I managed a few small Bass on the first night, I took a few grams of weight off it to see what would happen. Took it out in the AM for a test swim and it got bit off of the second cast. I have a few more drying in the garage.

Somewhere between building rods and pouring lead I found time to turn a few more. I made some changes to my first needle. I adjusted the taper, and hook placement. Also made an attempt at a Darter but we'll see how that goes.

I generally use a tail weight and add a belly weight up under the eyes, right in front of the belly hook. It makes for a better balance when swimming. If you aren't using a tail weight then load up the belly. Here are a couple of my needles.

It's a great feeloing to catch on your own plugs!

I'm using both on these. A little less tail weight and 3gr behind the belly hook. I'm trying to get it so that it sits with the fattest part of the belly at the water line to increase the "V" wake it creates. We'll see if my math is correct lol.

by weighting in the belly, with a little practice you can actualy make them swim...

up

I just finished one with tail and belly weight at a 4:1 ratio. It will sit up like a pencil and pop if you want it to or swim if I bring the rod tip down and retrieve. Why did I wait this long to start turning plugs????upup
