Bunker although after a Noreaster or storm, clams can be extremely effective in areas where they are smashed up on the beach like in the pocket of a jetty.

even though they work better in the spring, ill be using nice plump sandworms in a few places. And the key is fresh worms, like the ones that u dig up right before putting it on the hook.

Love throwing heads..... But I like to leave about two more inches of meat after the gills. Place the hook in that meat behind gills in top shoulder area. Sink a big mustard siwash 7/0 or 8/0 in that bad boy. Sharpen every hook no matter how sharp it looks. Also make sure no scales get stuck to point before you cast. Just my two cents.....

You really like using the heads? I caught a couple nice size bass on heads, but always feel like I am limiting myself by using heads - less of the blues or smaller bass - which is better than being skunked. What do you think?

Heads

I use nearly half the bunker (the head half) In the spring at night. Its a bass magnet and really big blues will take a head any night. I get big blues and bass on the heads. I rarely chunk unless i run out of heads. Clams i will use in the early morning tides at dawn. I plug in the fall but clams work great in the fall. Ive seen huge bass get taken on clams in jaybay in november.

How do you typically hook it - through the lips?

I usually go right through the bottom jaw and right out of the top of the mouth. Some people like to go throught the meat behind the head, but I have found my way casts better and keeps the mouth closed so the head and mouth doesn't fill with sand.

Thanks! Next time I will try using the head first - typically hold on to it for use when I run out of bait (most times I give it to the birds). I will post back after I try it.

Ive had 28 inch bass take the head with no problem. They hit it hard.
