This was a great, great article. It's a shame that we have to worry about bunkers being depleted from our waters. Goddamn.

I believe that George H W Bush is A major owner shareholder of Omega -Protein which was formerly called Zapata Oil which he founded in the 1950s.

bush connection to Omega is far flung at best, malcolm glazer (owner of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers took over in the early 90's and currently is not a huge shareholder). What these guys do to bunker schools kills us up North. they have over 20 spotter planes and put a net around an entire school. it makes no sense. as far the health benefits, you can get the same Omega 3 oil from flax seed and if you really want fish you can get it from fish carcass discards. anyone who likes catching stripers should be write a nice letter to Omega asking them to slow down. the pressure they have to increase quarterly earnings is enormous and they will not hesitate to take more fish to accomplish that. Long term sustainability and quarterly earnings don't match. ask Lehman Bros.

Interesting that everyone commenting is upset about the effect of large scale removals of bunkers on their sacred striped bass, but no one is seeing the big picture concerning the "privatization" of the fishery.

Why is the author only concerned about menhaden privatization when this is occurring in many other fisheries, hmmm?

FWIW, in MA I've never noticed much of a difference in abundance of menhaden in the last 20 or so years and I catch them commercially.

I think as most articles on fisheries management are, this is an over simplification of a very complex issue.

There were once menhaden reduction plants all up and down the east coast. All but the VA one has been gone for many many years. The lifespan of bunker is short and their fecundity is high. Having the major harvesters (man) gone for decades and not seeing the fish come back leads me to think there is more going on then simply commercial reduction operations.

Look at the other fish which make a similar living such as Atlantic Mackerel and Atlantic Herring. They receive more commercial fishing pressure (effort) then bunker. In the case of Mackerel, NMFS seems to think there are plenty, while many fishermen do not share their belief. It's spiny dogfish in reverse. Herring likely receives the most effort and is in the largest relative abundance.

All three; Menhaden, Mackerel and Herring are prodigious filter feeders and all three simply do not come inshore the way they once did.

Nothing stays the same, nor is it meant to. It's a dynamic system which is why it is healthy. Spiny dogfish is the Cod of our times.

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 5, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission ("ASFMC") today received the results of the latest Stock Assessment Workshop for Atlantic menhaden at the Menhaden Board meeting in Alexandria, Virginia. Consistent with the prior two ASMFC stock assessments reports in 2003 and 2006, the new report concludes that the Atlantic menhaden stock is not overfished and that overfishing is not occurring. A review panel of independent experts concurred in these findings. The Company believes that these results demonstrate that the Atlantic menhaden is abundant and continues to be harvested at sustainable rates.

"The findings of this stock assessment validate that Omega Protein and other menhaden fishermen have been fishing in a manner that does not negatively impact the sustainability of the menhaden fishery," said Omega Protein Senior Fisheries Biologist Ron Lukens. He added, "We believe that the menhaden fishery should continue to be managed based on the best available science and not conjecture, speculation and innuendo." Lukens also noted that the assessment did not take into account any data from 2009, which is thought to show a strong year class of young menhaden.

An important finding from the external review panel was that the assessment results are consistent with a single, coast-wide stock of menhaden and not a localized sub-stock as some have speculated. The panel's report concluded that assessing the stock at a sub-regional level (i.e. only in the Chesapeake Bay) "would be meaningless from a biological point of view" and "would be of no use in making sensible management decisions" and that setting sub regional quotas "could not sensibly be done by conducting sub regional assessments (and setting sub regional quotas on the basis of the assessments)." Although some activists have called for separate management of menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay, the Company believes that the current report confirms other studies from prior years showing that Atlantic menhaden are part of a single coast-wide stock that ranges along the entire coast from Florida to Maine.

Only a decent article. Gotta love the Times which had to add in,
