GSB ~ Day off search for gold~ 5-16-13

With all the reports of Gold from all corners of the island again this year.
Took the day in search of….

To the ramp with Dave @ 5:22..only trailer out there …… under way by 5:36..
beautiful Sunrise.

Met the big dredge operation on the way out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wind – am: west @ 5 or less
- pm: west @ 10 switched to strong SW @ 10-15+
Air - am 57 – Calm , Rain , light fog
- pm 73 – Breezy , Sunny
Low @ 10am
Water 52-56
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long long day...530am - 330pm

had the range of weather;
Started with nice sunrise into cloudy overcast sky, light fog and rain…..breaking by the flood to a bright sunny day.

Once we passed the caution area…fish breaking on top… Bluefish – 1st one of the season..
Moved to some of my weak spots I like…
Dropped in with great anticipation....fish on…crap, more blues..and more blues and more blues..
Everywhere we set up..blues.. just kept moving hoping to get away from the lure chopping leading fraying yellow eyed devils.
Was actually happy when I picked the 1st Robin of the year and not too soon after 1st Fluke of the year.. but the blues soon invaded there as well.

1 other boat on scene upon arrival – one hour later 10X that ..2 hrs double that..guess blues are the best bet in town..
Just didn’t want to be in the fleet..
so we went on an exploration of new areas and old areas not fished in a while..

All nada.. not a touch from anything. Then the rain started… cool morning already… rain made it very cool..took a look @ the very helpful MYRadar app..
A lot a rain moving..yellow n red mixed in –looks like it might slide below us..moved North just above it for about an hour.

We were almost about to head in when it let up and I convinced Dave to try by the inlet.

All the PB were there.. watched em pick away @ short fluke…all in line @ 1st – then spread wide.
We bumped around a bit until We finally found a fish.. a Nice sized 25”Blue..
Marked it and made a dozen or so passes
until I had a light pick up – which felt like a log in the tide and took off on Several runs..weakfish drag setting wasn’t going to help.. so I had to adjust on the run – never a good thing.. but I landed a Sweet 33” Bass with a half bit off tale – looked to be an injury from youth that scared over. A survivor. Had to send him back.
Good strong release.
Very Next drift – hooking into a similar size fish…ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ – drag still not perfect – so I tested my luck again with adjusting during a fight..but I lost this one in 2 runs.. ------not adjusting after the fight was just Dumb, testing my luck twice really dumb. I really hope that wasn’t the Big weak we were looking for……….
Adjusted correctly – hooked up with a 3rd bass. Another nice keeper 29.5” – Bullnose. Another Survivor . Had to go back as well.. strong release as well.
Just blues after that but still larger than earlier.. bite slowed around 2-230pm

Headed back in…but made a fun stop playing around the bridge ..picking up a short bass , a med size Blue and a skate..
Really heading in now..3:30pm.

Nice day on the water. Relatively very calm all day.
Making that extra effort @ the end was worth it – saved the day and made not finding even one weak not so bad.

_________________________________________________________________________
Total:
2 keeper bass (29",33")
1 short bass ( 21")
1 lost keeper bass??? – if this was a BIG weak…I’ll be looking for you..
1 short fluke (17")
17+ blues (18-26") most
2 robin
1 skate
__________________________________________________________________________
