Shivering Shakedown Cruise ~ 4-21-13

Shivering Shakedown Cruise ~ 4-21-13

Freezing is more like it..BRRRR down

Every put together the day before + Bundled up 2 jackets, double socks etc.

To the Ramp @ 8am:
38 degrees with Wind NWW in the Face @ 20mph..nice morning if you’re a penguin.

Definetly the be the coldest spring launch on record.
For a split second I thought about just fixing the trailer rollers and calling it a day….
But Couldn’t wait to get a feel for 2 new rods built over the winter from the boat..

----------------------------------------------
Air = COLD 38-50 + Bright SUN.
Wind = COLD NNW 15-20 gusty
water = low 41.8 high 50.1
High @ 920ish
-----------------------------------------------
Under way @ 8:30..took my time launching.
Nowhere to hide form the wind today.. white caps all over.

Motor shot some smoke out @ start up…weird. Usually only does that Once during the tune up…
Got her up on plane for a test nearly right away for just 30 seconds but ran very well.

Cool water 44 @ the ramp ( similar to 2011 : water - cool 45-48 ( 6 degrees colder than 4-24-10 ~ 2012: 50 @ the ramp AM...56-57 high )
Should be a slower start based on the temps alone.. we’ll see..

Putt putted around as the tide rose….casted out , un spooled and re spooled each rod while slowly underway…really gets all the kinks out and helps seat the New line perfectly.. a must each spring : 1.5-2 mph.

Hit a few spots on the way.. used the new SCIII – casted very well.. nice sensitivity just need a hook up to really test it..( never happened) changed tactics and had a few new experiments that I put together the week before.. New/old ideas are always fun to mix together.
It was just terrible conditions Wind against – white caps, bad quick drifts, muddy dirty coffee churned water, weeds ,grass..etc.
Took me awhile to find that right drift look/angle…but I got it..

Marked a few fish in one area….had a bump ..and 1+hrs later of throwing the bag…One of the new techs worked..picked up a MIcRO bass @ 13”…At least I wasn’t skunked..and I know which of the new looks is best.

4hrs in the wind and cold was enough..

past mid tide upon return and the channel to SB is MUCH lower than last year @ the same tide point 2.2 – 2.7 ft deep– I estimate 2ft lower – it’s also about 30-40’ east of where it was a few seasons ago when it was impassable @ low tide…

Back to the Ramp @ 12:40

Pulled the trailer into the ramp out of the wind and replaced the 2 bad Yellow rollers that broke after ONE season.. used a DEMO blade on the portable SAWZall and blasted through each in 20 seconds. Only took 30 mins. For both. ( last year it took me an hour for 2)

Home by 1:30 – should have got the mower running as the grass is creeping up fast..but ran outta steam..

===========================
Total:
1 micro Bass 13"
2 Bumps
1 Maybe hit
--------------------------------------------------
2 new RP-10 Trailer rollers ( replace crappy 2012 yellow rollers which failed)
2 new Brake LED trailer lights
1 New Front Side Marker
1 NEW wire Harness.
1 new Stern running light switch.
1 New Kidde Extinguisher
1 New Gas Line.

====================================

-Chased a seagull with a Bunker in his mouth – he couldn’t fly away @ first and tried to drag it away from me as fast as he could.. I chased him in a circle for 5 min trying to get a pict.but he eluded me - until he got up enough courage to go for it and fly away..chased him to shore to get that pict,as he is hating on me...hilarious.
- 99% of bird grounded. Never a good sign
- Ospreys on the perch
- got the new WM rod bent on the mirco - new rods are always good luck for me.
- New Buff angler gloves are great..
- 2 blackhawks fly over is always cool.
- quite a few boats out 4 other trailers @ the ramp upon return.

Frozen but happy to be out again.
