GSB ~ Summer Weaks Recon ~ 7-22-12

GSB ~ Summer Weaks Recon 2012 ~ 7-22-12

Should have prepped during the week for my 1st WEAK trip of 2012..but didn’t think of it..(1st week back for Vacation had me running around) … So I took Sat to Prep all of my gear and it took All day @ a leisurely pace.. Everything is in its place ~ jigs, rigs, and bait I was now more than ready to kick off the 1st S-shore trip…I just the weaks were..Since this year has been a very different – I figured I had a good chance at finding them earlier than years past….even so, it’s still 50/50.

Clear Clear morning with planets showing bright in the sky as I did the last minute geared up in the dark. on the road @ 4:53 as planned..
to the water 5:22 right on time..but really could have been 15 min earlier..

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sunrise 5:39
Wind Ne @ 5 until 7:30 am -- then zero - switched to SE by 10:20
water 71 -75
air 59 !!! to 82 ( 23 degree jump..)
Low @ 7? 8?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Under way @ 4K into FLAT as glass / clear sky conditions – Not another boat in sight, perfect.
Cruised past the break spot from ’10 – still feel bad about the old faithful 70…..2nd yr with 90 and so far it’s superior.

Was on my way to spot I had in mind form last season… but on the way I passed on old spot that hasn’t been productive in 2 seasons..
Since this was a recon trip..Decided that to give it a quick 2-3 drifts…had a few Bites in less than a minute – a very good sign picked up a small Kingfish on the 1st drift. At the beginning of the 2nd drift, I picked a WEAK nearly right away.. Just over keeper size @ 17” --- NICE ! within the 15 min of lines in.. Success!

Where there’s one…….picked up 2 more shorts on the Next drift . Had a pretty good bite going and very, very good slow and steady .5 drift.
Even though I found a few, I still was thinking about the original spot I had in mind….but “Never leave fish to find fish” Kept ringing in my head..… So I stayed on it..and picked up some smaller keepers( 16-17”) and a few more shorts..
Glad I Stayed… . started getting better sizes as the sun was up near the 720 mark. Hit a really really nice fish Drag was going nuts.. being to light side I had a hard time moving this fish…took a few minutes and saw a larger flash – but not as large as it should have been for the amount of Drag… Snagged a 20”+ fish sideways.
Still a very nice weak – but 20” sideways?? What size would the fish be if it were lip hooked…?
Fish were aggressive. Had another 2 on 2 more drifts as the fish were slamming the offering.. picked another fish just under 19.

The 2 Hour bite really slowed and I started to pick @ fish – still they were here…0.1…not moving @ all. So I decide to head off to the destination I had in mind I in the 1st place…Still a RECON trip and I needed to know if the pastures were greener…and I needed to get there before the South shore Parade started..

Got there and – NADA….well no weaks but some Sea Bass and a Sand shark… ReConed a little more but decided to High tale it back to the more productive spot as the wind picked up out of the South..

Back on it but it was too late.. parade was just beginning and the fish hate most of the locals..Still had a few more fish despite it..a very slow pick with only small fish around one spot…as well as another Kingfish and an Actual SPOT ( my 1st ever)

Stuck it out 1hr more than I should have – called it @ 11…but the GSB CHOP/ SLOP was on..Had to drive 10mph for ½ the ride back just keep my teeth in…also used the clip from my Plier/ scissor combo to hold the crack in the windshield from getting worse ( happened last season over here) the traffic was Extra Large today…I think I saw only saw 1 other Boat that was 18’ everything else was 30’- 40’ pushing tsunami sized wakes..
Next time I should exit earlier.. but I more than likely won’t…BECAUSE it’s WEAK time!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total: ( all released)
9 Keeper Weaks ( 16"-20.75") most were 16-17" only 2 were 20"+
8 short Weaks ( 13-15.875")
2 Kingfish ( 13" , 15")
2 Black Sea Bass ( 10" 11")
1 Snapper Blue ( 11")
1 Sand Shark (24")
1 Spot/Croaker (6") 1st one ever
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Blue claws all over the top water..
- eel grass mats here and there but not too bad yet..
