SB – PJ ~ 1st Keeper Fluke & Blues 2012 ~ 5-19-12

SB – PJ ~ 1st Keeper Fluke & Blues 2012 ~ 5-19-12

Got some new tires for the trailer late Thursday swapped them on quick the day before -- good thing as one of the 10yr old rims looked like it was about to fail...

Left early in the Am as I was out of gas for the boat. Stopped to full up _ in and out quick_ to the ramp by 7am
– low tide and the bugs were bad… Fish rolled right next to the boat while @ the Dock. Fished while I waited for Dave @ 7:30 ~ right on time.
Under way and into the bay – met by a breezy NE wind.

Water 55-59
Wind NE 10-12
Air 66-79 pleasantly warm by midday. FULL Sun.
High 11:16
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stopped @ a few spots.. searching .. had some time to search before High… nada everywhere we went for about 2 hrs.. Had one bite. But it was a robin ( not a good start)
Made a big Move…Saw birds working up on the shoal in the monster fleet of flukers…marked fish below…a good sign.
Hooked nearly right away…Fluke and a keeper – 1st one since 2010..thank goodness for these new regs..if they were the same last year I would have had keepers every trip last year…
Stayed for a little while with the armada. Picked the 1st Blues of 2012 , few more fluke and too many robins…but no BASS yet.
Made a move towards MS – when I made a detour to a spot we like.. all alone. Gave it a few drifts. A robin here a fluke there. Blue bite off…then the birds started working just west of us..got near em and they left..( it’s been like that this spring) – stayed in the pattern 1st drift – nailed a nice Bass 27”.. a very cool sight was there were 2-3 other bass following the hooked bass.… 2-3 drifts later nailed another @29.75” and a gain – 2-3 other bass following the hooked fish in trying steal what he had..…stayed a little too long trying to get another.. headed back to the original plan..
Stopped along the way on a spot Dave suggested – never fished it before. Gave it a shot..1st drift .. nailed another schoolie and again this fish had a follower…. Made a few drifts and got another..no followers this time. … a few more drifts and went back to the Original Plan again..
The original plan…didn’t really work out as we got back too late….about 20 min into the way too quiet air…the birds start working now east of us…resisted chasing for one drift – but then we moved. Get there to see fish boiling…cast into them… bLUEs.. 3 in arrow on 3 casts….drifted away from them..and started hitting a few bass.. picked away @ them one every other drift or so..with a robin / blue/ fluke mix as well.. most consistent action of the day..and we were casting with the wind and with the drift..but it worked. Fish were hitting hard on the drift down retrieve…Finally nailed a NICE fat football shaped 33” Bass..made 3 nice runs. Dave hooked up @ the same time with a just short 27”…made a double release..
Stayed for a little while longer but didn’t do much after that.
Checked a few spots on the way back ..met a bunker school. Nothing on them…YET..
Called it another long day @ 6pm
A really really nice day on the water.. so far this spring has been very nice rain during the middle of the week .. sunny n nice for the weekends..it’s also been good to me with keeper Bass..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Total: All released. 12 of each :
- 2 Keeper Bass ( 29.5”, 33”)
- 10 Schoolie Bass ( 22”-27”) most 24-25”
- 1 Keeper Fluke ( 19.75”) 1st since 2010…skunked in 2011
- 11 Short fluke ( 15”-19”)
- 12 Blues ( 19-24”)
- 35+ Robins..mostly Daves( sorry buddy)
- 5-6 missed bass hits..2 nice fish on & off for Dave.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
-quite a few Muggers out today……all alone in a few spots and a few guys get up so close I thought they wanted to talk..weird.
-Saw a clam raker boat with what looked like a make shift sail? For clamming?
Building another rod for Memorial day weekend..really rushed this one into production. Might actually get out 2 times this weekend instead of having to cramp it all into one trip…these marathon days are exciting but rough..still rockin again when I got home..couldn’t really relax when I got there either because my wife had friends over for the Preakness ~ so into the basement to work on another rod I am building for Memorial day weekend..really rushed this one into production.
