A few rants here on what should have been a serene night of casting to breaking fish. I was in my favorite North Shore fishing spot when a few guys showed up. First it was two then the third showed. The first two were quite friendly and set up a good distance away, not crowding. Complaint is that even before the first line was tossed the wafting odor of a cigarette comes my way. I do not smoke. I venture out into the fresh air to enjoy it not pollute it. Eventually this guy moves on since the fish have not shown yet. Now comes the third guy. Thinks im his buddy and comes right over. When he realizes im not his pal he move on but only a few yards, crowds me. He also lights up and begins to toss what I attribute to a tow truck hitting the water. So between the squeaky reel, cigarettes and loud splash the enjoyment was over. I out lasted them they went home I fish a while longer in the fresh air but no fish. Oh well.

Plese stop smoking when fishing

sorry for your blown opportunity regarding those guys.

Too often anglers are REALLY inconsiderate. Smoking, loud talking, screwing around and not really fishing.

I have had similar experiences; Keep at it. YOU will win.

Also consider talking to the guy; if he has to smokePLEASE MOVE IT on down the beach.

Decided not to post what I was going to it sounded more harsh than I thought appropriate. I also don't smoke but I'm certain if another guy on the beach does it's not going to ruin my night. I also don't understand your attitude regarding you not being another angler's "buddy". Is it really such an inconvenience to say hello have a short conversation while you continue to fish. I'm sure I just don't get it. Good luck with the rest of your season, let's all hope your not bothered to much.

A few years ago I was fishing the surf in Breezy Point with a buddy and there was this guy driving up and down the beach doing about 40 to 50 mph as he passed by the 5th or 6th time he saw that my friend and I were both hooked up so he gets out of his truck grabs his rod and runs right into to the water splashing and making such a disturbance the bite shut down at the point of which I had just hooked up on 9 of the last 10 casts and my buddy was pretty close to doing the same some people just have no clue I still wonder how I never said anything to him.

Ruined evening

I have not posted in a long time. After reading that report I start to wonder why the reports section keep diminishing. This post here makes me realize why some guys have that miserable look on your face when your out there fishing. To rant about some fellow anglers trying to enjoy themselves the same way you like to enjoy yourself. Buddy I think you should invest in real estate and purchase a private beach so you won't have to suffer no more. You say how there no buddy of yours until the time comes when your out there and you need help and that fellow angler bails you out. Life's too short buddy to complain about cigarette smoke at the beach. Best of luck buddy.

Had to nuke a couple here...

And will continue to if folks continue with the name calling...

OK, this is becoming a rant about perceived standards of etiquette when fishing. I've yet to see Miss Manners relate that smoking is on the "bad manners" list when out fishing so we have to accept that it's OK. If it bothers someone, that person should politely ask the smoker to please cease or move. THEN if the person continues, there's good reason to kvetch about the event.

Please keep it civil...

Nothing worse than being down wind of second hand cigarette smoke. Atrocious, putrid, foul, ugly stuff. Brutal.

1. If smoking is allowed, then YOU have the right to move.
2. If something being done wrong to disturb the bite... Take the time to quietly educate or instruct the person. Works especially well if you already have a fish or two.
3. Perhaps if you did take the time to talk to these fellows it would be easier to ask for a compromise.

If the above does not suit you, you can always buy your own beach or better yet an island. Personally I have enjoyed many of the people I have met on the beaches. Not just anglers, but dog walkers, joggers and others. It is as much a part of fishing as is catching the fish...

Public beaches are just that... PUBLIC.

My rant

Lets clear a few things up...

Never in my post did it read my night was ruined. It will take more than someone smoking or trolls to ruin my time. Especially when I'm into fish.

I was not his buddy. He was looking for his buddy, friend. pal etc. who was fishing 50 yards further down. I directed the "smoker" to his buddy but it was too far to walk so he stayed next to me.

His buddy, I spoke to earlier and gave him friendly advice on what was hot the night before and what was not. He was appreciative.

It is a rant. I do not care either way if you agree or disagree. Just want to hear how people felt on the issue. How you go about sharing your feelings is what separates the men from the boys.

It is not the first time nor do I expect it to be the last since I will not be buying my own private island or beach. I bet some of the nay sayers and I have fished together or at least been in casting distance of each other with no negative out come.

Over and Out...
