Spent some time at the piers today with my daughters fiance, Sean. We were hoping the herring moved east from Canarsie & Coney Island. The weather was great, the water was like a mirror but Herring were a no show. Maybe the seals who were keeping us company were keeping them away. Will keep trying & will keep you up to date.

Reply from the piers

We thought it was the seals, but it was to nice to go home. Our boats are under shrink wrap for now but we are looking into a smaller one to trailer for days like yesterday. Hey Pepperpot, it was nice to meet a fellow noreastner, hope you didn't tell the wife about the slurpees. LOL

Wow, looks like a beautiful day to be out fishing!

I am newbie to fishing for herring. What rigs and bait are customarily
used?

Thank you!

Herring Rig

I think it is spelled Sadiki Rig. Just tell any tackle shop what you are going for and they will point you in the right direction. Good luck.

It's a Sabiki rig. About 5 tiny sharp hooks with some mylar on each spaced out a few inches from one another. Tie a small weight to the end, cast out and jig slowly. When the fish are in, you can get multiple hookups.
