A friend just invited me to Piermont for the weekend. Was thinking of trying the pier. Any advice on time of day/tide/tackle?
Also, is there any place locally to buy sandworms or bloodworms (not sure which worm is best).

1. Is there ample parking near the pier?
2. Do you need a freshwater license to fish there?

The pier is actually about a 3/4-mile long strip of road. Have not had problems finding a place to park just before you head out, right across from a small baseball field, but it may be getting more crowded there than in the past. You do NOT need a license to fish Piermont. Make sure you don't drive out onto the 'pier,' even to drop off supplies/people, because they will fine you. Have heard the south side may be better on the incoming tide, because it floods that particular area, but this may just be heresay.

ample parking... the lot by the baseball field is fairly large but you have to walk out to the pier. you can also get a temp. permit from the town police to drive out to the pier (not on the pier) and park along the side of the road that way all your gear can be close at hand. bloodworms are better. i used to go to a tackle shop in sleepy hollow, just north of the tappan zee bridge but i dont know the name of it or the street its on so thats probably not much help... probably a shop closer to the pier but not sure

Matt's sporting goods in haverstraw usually has them year round.
I saw a single fishing boat up by croton point... and was wondering if any bites. Thanks for the report.

Fishing Piermont
I have fished Piermont for 3 years in a row now and honestly, I do better with sand worms than blood worms, and sand worms are cheaper too!!  . As for bait there is also a shop in Nyak. I posted the link below for more info. My advise would be to make sure to keep the receipt as sometimes DEC checks to where you buy the bait due some regulations they have. "You can not buy live bate in an area far from where you are fishing as it may contain bacteria that harm fish in some areas." Also, if you want to drive to the Pier, the permit can be bought at the police station but only 9AM to 4PM and Monday through Friday as they do not sell it other times. You can buy it and ask for it to be valid for the days you want it. it used to be $10 / day, but it's well worth.

bass up to 13lbs though mostly smaller schoolies in croton area since opening day action slow 2 to five fish a day. Blood worms this time of the year. Water cold but warming. Good luck!

Any tide or time of day better than others?
Also, what kind of set up do you recommend for fishing the worms?

Piermont Fishing
At hightide fish the southside of the pier. It has worked great for me. I use a high-low rig for worms. Many other fisherman say not to use big hooks, but I use size 3 hooks and they have worked great.

Who says you need worms this time of year?
Caught over a dozen fish this week...
...on the fly.
Kayak + fly rod + early in the year (44-46 water temp when fish were caught) =
STRIPERS.
