I was catching up on some much needed rest today. My wife was going to take the dog for a walk on the beach and twisted my arm to go down and do some fishing.

The wind was directly from the north at 10-15 knots. Then changed to a NNW and creating quite a chop and some 2-3 ft waves. The water was still pretty clear considering the serious wind.

I walked down to a boulder field to try to coax out some fish between them. Nothing doing. Then I tried down by a bar that has produced in the past. This was the right move. My second cast into the calmer water produced a blue of about 8 pounds. I then cast closer to the bar and managed a small bass. Next cast produced a another blue that bit my leader off about 3 inches below my mainline. Taking with it a Cotton Cordell Pencil.

I go into my bag and realized I left my leaders on my coffee table. I was not going all the way back home. My wife had found a small jig on the beach with about 12 inches of what felt like 10 or 12 pound test mono. I cut off the jig and tied on the line. To that I tied on a Smack-it popper that I had found last time out over here.

Those things cast like a$$ into wind but I managed to get it out to twenty feet of white water coming over the bar. It was ON! I pulled in 6 more bass with hits coming on just about every cast. The fish were flipping over my lure, slamming it out of the way and slapping it up out of the water. What a blast it was.

That little piece of old a$$ mono held on until the fish moved on with the tide then snapped in half just before Sunset, sending that Smack-it to a watery grave. Or someone elses surf bag.

I gave a little holler to the Bass gods for an awesome birthday of fishing.

Happy birthday Frankie!!!! Glad to see you land some nice fish on a random birthday walk on the beach. It was also nice hanging out with you at the buggy up in Montauk. Hope to see you out on the water again this fall.
