A couple of days ago, my son was cleaning the Li’l Jillybird at the dock after finishing a charter. He spotted a young boy fishing off the dock with an oversized rig and no chance of catching anything. He called the boy over to the boat. He had some live pilchards in the live well, hooked one on a light spinning rod, threw a couple of live ones over the side, and told the boy where to cast.

The boy quickly hooked up with a nice jack which he fought like a pro. And he caught another couple. By the end, the kid was beaming. My son was thrilled, and the boy’s parents said they’d contact my son to arrange for a charter real soon.

So the dad called to do a trip for today. With the cold front passing through and a northerly wind, it was much too rough to take a 7 year old out in the ocean. The family is Canadian and the dad said his son had such a good time with Captain Wylie and really wanted to fish. So my son said that even though he doesn’t do these trips, he’d be happy to take the boy fishing for peacock bass in the Miami Dade canal system on foot.

So they arranged for the boy and his grandpa to go with my son for a couple of hours. My son grabbed a pail of live shiners and picked them up at their hotel and off they drove in my son’s pickup truck.

Now peacock bass fishing in the Miami canals is not like fishing in the pristine Everglades. It can be pretty gritty and urban. We’ve caught them under the commuter train station by a homeless encampment, by an office complex, by a parking lot. Anyways, the fishing was very slow. The cold front shocked the fish into a non-aggressive state. But Wylie didn’t want to disappoint Felix so they tried one last spot. This one was stacked with fish. Loads of peacocks, cichlids, and some huge largemouth bass were everywhere but they wouldn’t bite. Finally, Wylie got a beautiful three pound peacock to engulf a shiner and handed the rod to Felix. After an epic battle, Felix landed the bass for a great photo and release. Then Felix nailed a giant largemouth bass which unfortunately he lost.

Besides the fish, they found a big python, two other snakes, iguanas galore, and some great birds. Felix had a wonderful time and so did my son. At the very end of the trip, after Felix was dropped off to his parents, the grandpa told Wylie that Felix i has Stage 4 brain and bone cancer. Felix is a wonderful, sweet 7 year old boy who loves to fish. My son is devastated by this news but can’t wait to take out Felix again. Please send prayers to Felix. Life is not fair, and Felix needs your prayers. Thanks.

Prayers on the way

As of this moment, prayers are off to heaven for the boy, his family & your son. ( UR son's simple gesture that meant so much)

Whenever we ***** and complain about lives nuisances, we should think about those who's trials are so much heavier then our own.

Take a moment to pray for those less fortunate. It's not much to ask.

My prayers go out for Felix' full recovery, and blessings on your son. That was a great kindness he exhibited by getting involved and sharing his gifts.

Felix is in my thoughts and prayers. Your son has turned into quite the young man. You should be proud. Hope Felix's dad and grandpa will be able to have the same, they already do. He's a man already dealing with his illness the way he does.GOD BLESS HIM!

Praying for Felix and Wylie now Bob. I’m sure his generosity was a huge blessing to that family.
