Report location Offshore > Li'l Jillybird Cashes In On Epic Blackfin Bite Off Miami

« Previous Report Next Report »

On Wednesday afternoon, after class, my son and his friend Wyatt took the Li'l Jillybird offshore of the reef to try for some sails. In sporty conditions, my son set up two kites with three lines on each. Live pilchards were the bait. They started out in 450 feet and drifted NE towards the reef line. Well, they quickly hooked up with three nice blackfin tuna which they caught. Suddenly, the whole ocean exploded with acres of blackfin jumping out of the water. The boys switched over to freshwater topwater hardbaits and started absolutely slamming the blackfin. In about an hour of fishing, before it turned dark, the boys landed thirty blackfin and lost dozens more. They kept 15 for the table. The blackfin ranged in size from about 3 pounds to 10 pounds. My son's friend was ecstatic and is bringing pounds of filet home tonight on spring break. My son brought a couple of pounds of sushi to their dorm study hall that evening, and within minutes it was all gone. Now my son is flying home to the bitter cold. At least he'll be able to get in a last round of ice fishing in Vermont next week. And here I thought Spring was fast upon us earlier in the week.

Fresh sushi for everyone
