The canyons are on fire again – and inshore ain’t bad either. Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the John Dale charter out Saturday morning and ran right back to the Bluefin grounds by the Chicken Canyon. Putting out the way way back ballyhoo and a planner rod it didn’t take long until one of the ballys on the way back was eaten. This fish was a real one. The fight carried on for a very long time with John on the rod for most of it and ended up 2 hours later with an 80 inch Bluefin laying alongside the boat. The fish was fought on a Penn International 50VSW and swam away fine. They also picked a 35 pound Bluefin in there as well.

They motored out to the Hudson Canyon and worked out to the 100-square area to find a nice break and a ton of fish. In very short order they had 11 yellowfin and 1 for 2 on white marlin. They finished up the afternoon troll tagging and releasing yellowfin with a total of 24 fish with many tagged and released including the white marlin.

In release mode already they decided to focus on swording at night and only put out one tuna rod – well that rod caught 5 yellowfin at night and they caught another one on a spinning rod and popper right at daybreak when the yellowfin were breaking all around the boat. More interesting a boat next to us that did not do well on the troll worked the chunk bite hard and limited out on the chunk. These are all big yellowfin on the chunk “just like the ole days DAVE” – so if you miss chunking yellowfin get out there NOW!!! Of course watch the weather.

Up on the trolling the morning the amazing fishing continued. They trolled fish all morning actually running away from yellowfin that were feeding on the surface to look for a big-eye. That didn’t work – they caught another 14 yellowfin before 8am and ended the trip with 38 yellowfin (22 YELLOWFIN WERE TAGGED FOR SCIENCE AND RELEASED).

The yellowfin were all over our Canyon Runner Spreader Bars in Rainbow Squid and Green and Rainbow Green Machines and large ballyhoo and very large jet and single lures.
