The long wait for the Jillybird IV that began in late August is just about over. We’re just finishing the final touches on our brand new 2018 Stamas 390 Aegean which we popped in the water at the factory in Tarpon Springs for a sea trial about two weeks ago. On Thursday, my son and I will run the boat from St. Petersburg to Miami where she’ll spend the winter. In late May, we’ll run her up to Mamaroneck for the summer.

Looking forward to getting some kites up this weekend off of Miami for some sails. My son’s charters the past week have been catching a bunch of mahi which seem to like the warm weather and easterly winds. Sailfishing is good one day and off the next. Some days it’s been very windy and other days it’s fine offshore.

Some big kings are around along with some nice cudas and sharks too.

The tarpon seem about to bust open after a slow start with some of the boats doing well today. In the bay, we’ve got plenty of sea trout on the grass flats and on the reef, last week, one of my son’s clients caught a massive schoolmaster snapper.

The weather looks to be great for the Miami boat show and the upcoming holiday week. So if you’re coming to Miami and are looking for a fun and reasonably priced fishing.charter, give my son, Capt. Wylie, a call at 914-874-9697.

That snapper is a great dinner. I know I’m getting anxious for the season to start. Can’t wait to see the new rig. FV On The Rocks will be sailing for flounder April 1.

Good luck with the new boat, that's a sweet ride.

What did you power her with?

The Jillybird IV is powered with triple Yamaha 300s.

I was tempted to go with the new Suzuki 350s but that technology is just too new. I learned my lesson with my Fountain about being the first to have new high tech engines.

The Li’l Jillybird, our 246 Robalo Cayman my son Charters with has a 300 Yamaha and that engine has been fabulous. So I like this power plant. We leave St. Pete at noon tomorrow and hopefully will arrive at Miami late Friday afternoon.

You can’t go wrong with the Yamaha. When I repowered in 2015 I went with the Yamaha 150 and I love it.

Lots of luck with the new Jillybird!

To any folks considering a day on the Li’l Jillybird, I give it 2 thumbs up. I took my teenagers for a trip back in December and Captain Wylie was hardworking, patient, and professional all the way. He chased down a mixed catch including a blitz of almaco jacks that we brought home for poke bowls. A great day!
