First the report or the YIPPEE!! Look at me I caught fish!!! Post: I've caught over 1000 stripers this year and am still catching, virtually all on Striper Strikes. By far the greatest number of these fish were less than 20 inches, but 131 were 20 inches or more, and 7 of these were keepers, the largest being 32 inches. Just like on LI, find running water in an estuary up here and cast, you'll catch.

Now the rant: Many have complained that there are few reports posted by non-commercial entities. You have to remember that For Hire Operations need to advertise in any way possible way and posting reports is a way to reach potential fares. Yes, at times some of these reports may be prone to a bit of hyperbole, but any experienced fisherman learns to read between the lines to get a good sense of what's really going on.

In terms of private posting, maybe it's me, but private posting strikes me as nothing but a narcissistic LOOK AT ME I CAUGHT FISH exercise in futility. As an avid striper fisherman, we tend to take an oath of OMERTA and are extremely close-mouthed about our fishing, especially if we're catching.

Additionally most of us striper fishermen, especially the surf rats, have taken an oath NOT to spot burn so even if they post a report it will do nothing to let on where they fish. Take it from someone who once, on a popular LI spot, quickly dug a hole, tossed his fish into it and stood on it while he spent 15 min telling someone who just came by that there were no fish there. Let's face it, in a crowded fishing environment like LI do you really want 1000 of your closest friends suddenly converge on your secret spot????

I strongly suggest that those of you lamenting the dearth of privately posted reports spend your time cultivating reliable private contacts to establish an informative network. That's how you get good fishing info!

Now for some disclaimers, if you caught that special fish, had a great day or were out with children or grandchildren, yes post reports with lots of pictures!! We all want to celebrate those significant moments with you!!!

OK rant over, get off your keyboards and get your butts out fishing!!!

congratulations to your over 1000 bass
as for fewer reports from the surf here - i believe it has everything to do with so-called "spot burning" and another lamenting of "looks undersized fish" on the posted picturesdown..
i never understood the "spot burning" issue on long island south beaches, without sharing where and how - this site is reduced to few narcissistic fishermen who likes to brag..
sad indeed. it was a great website

I agree. Good stuff. Thank you for the update. I mostly do SS LI fishing. As such, I know conditions change, and fish migrate. I've had days when I've caught fish that weren't catchable and other days I only caught a little peace and quiet. For me, I like to know what lures are working and what's in the keepers stomach. My secret spot will be gone the next big storm that comes through, esp on the SS.
