My friend Shelley has been telling me for years about his friend and great charter captain, Capt. Jim Delano of Peace of Mind Charters. Shelley invited me to join him and Capt. Jim., for an afternoon charter today. That was an easy invitation for me to accept.

I left my house in Westchester at 10 am and the temperature was already 90 degrees. But at the dock at Oakland's Marina, it was actually cold -- 64 degrees. We left the dock around 12:30 pm. Since the season is just beginning out east, Jim decided to go on a scouting mission while waiting for the tide to change for the shot at fluke. We headed over to a secret spot with some ripping current. Things started slowly - it took me almost 30 seconds into the first drift to hook up. Lol. First fish was a chunky but short bass. Next up were non-stop blues in the 6-9 pound class. Action was insane till the tide changed. We wound up with 3 short bass and probably 20 or more blues, keeping a couple for the table.

Then we headed to the fluke grounds, again not knowing if they had arrived. With a strong wind against a lesser tide, we had some drift. Despite the less than ideal conditions, our first three fish were keeper fluke between 19 and 20 inches. We had steady action on short fluke, including a bunch of last year's keepers. The dreaded sea robins are here too, but not too bad yet. We finished the day with another two keepers.

Capt. Jim certainly lives up to his well-deserved reputation for putting clients on the fish. Plus, he's a super fellow. Thanks guys for a great afternoon.
