Rossi's
Clouser
by Lou Rossi
Many Nor'east Saltwater fly
rodders will remember Lou Rossi as one of the founders and past presidents
of the Salty Fly Rodders of New York. Lou has been fly fishing our waters
for many years, and he has come up with a Clouser variation that he says,
"Gives the pattern a different attitude in the water. Over the years,
all that have tried it swear by it. It is also very popular in Florida
and an absolute killer on ladyfish and snook."
Currently, Lou divides his time between Florida
and Connecticut where he is a member of the Connecticut Flyrodders Assn.
"I fish a lot from the beaches in the spring," Lou said. "Once
a week I go out of Westport with Steve Tiffinger, a Salty member and a
fishing buddy of many years. In the spring, we come across to the Smithtown
beaches, and we do very well. In the fall, we fish the Connecticut side,
looking for albies and big stripers."

Step 1: Bend the eye of the hook 45 degrees toward
the point.
Step 2: Put the hook in your tying vise point down
and wrap red floss starting one-eighth of an inch behind the eye, and
continue the wrap for approximately one-half inch along the shank. Tie
off and coat with head cement.
Step 3: Wrap white thread at the hook eye up to
red floss. Create two small bumps slightly apart to seat the lead barbells.
Step 4: Secure the lead barbell eyes between the
bumps with Figure-8 wraps. Coat with head cement.
Step 5: Turn the hook in the vise so that the point
faces up, and tie in a small bunch of white Ultra-Hair, pulling down on
a double wrap so that the bunch is tight on top of the hook shank.
Step 6: Tie a small bunch of Krystal Flash on top
of the white Ultra-Hair.
Step 7: Tie a small bunch of chartreuse Ultra-Hair
on top of the Krystal Flash, with double wraps to achieve a separation
of colors.
Step 8: Finish the head and coat with your favorite
cement. Add eyes.
Note: Lou epoxies Red 3-D Molded Stick-On Eyes
to the barbells. As an option, you may use Silver or Gold Molded or Prism
Eyes, as well as substituting Real-Eyes for the barbells.
