Nice to meet you. As far as places to fish are concerned, I wouldn't be able to help you all that much (most of my fishing is done from a local party boat). However, I am able to tell you this: you need a permit. I think it's $10 or $15 for a resident. New rule. To fish on a party boat you don't need one.
As far as eating fish from the Hudson are concerned, I wouldn't do it, unless very infrequently. I don't usually eat striped bass and bluefish. They have more chemicals in their bodies than smaller species. From what I've read, if you do eat them, try not to eat stripers that are over 15 pounds or blues over five pounds. The best fish to eat in this area are bottom fish:
1) Blackfish/Tautog
2) Black Seabass
3) Fluke
4)Porgies
You don't have to listen to me, though. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Fishing from the piers and walls around NYC is not my thing. Fish coming out of the Hudson river may contain PCB's, as the river was polluted by GE many years ago and the fish living and migrating in the river have quantities in their bodies. It is recommended to limit eating these fish to once a month, pregnant woman less. If you serious about fishing you can take the subway to Sheepshead bay and catch a party boat, pay your fare and fish for whatever they are fishing for, rod rental is available as well as necessary terminal gear. I fish on the Brooklyn VI for blues and stripers. They will be going for Blackfish shortly. Other boats fish for bottom specites. Your other opinion is to find someone living in your area that has a car and is willing to share a ride. You may want to try fishing in Long Island sound from the Throggs neck bridge out.
This changes from year to year, and now there is said to be a new saltwater fishing license needed, though several townships on Long Island are fighting this in court. You can find info for that on the DEC website as well.
