Headed into the bay today to fish on the little MJ today.I was greeted in the parking lot by my good friend Timmy.Well Timmy already had himself all worked up in a tizzy about the weather and forecast.I told him not to worry and lets get a cup of coffee.Capt.John arrived shortly and said we wouldn't be going in the ocean as its going to be to rough and he had some good drops in the river.Well when we arrived at the Jetty it wasn't bad at all with a 2 to 4 foot sea.We decided to go for it and make the run into the ocean. After about an hour of steaming Capt.John Pulled back on the throttles and spread 2 anchors. We were now in 3 to 5 foot seas, still not to bad. After 20 minutes not a touch Capt.John decided to move a little further south. We set up on a new piece of bottom with a scratch and peck here and there. Its about 10:00 am and we have 2 or 3 tog on the boat and the seas are now a SPORTY 5 TO 7 FOOT and im wondering what the hell im doing here. Its a bit adventerous to keep my balance on the 35'down easter but she is riding like a duck and its not to bad.I notice Timmy is starting to pick a fish here and there on the other side of the boat and decide its time to mug him.As soon as I get down I have life after 3 minutes of waiting out small taps I swing and bring up a double header of 15 and 16 inch tog.Drop back down and bam another solid hit I swing and pull up a nice 5 lb.tog.I now notice Mark is into fish and Timmy as well.As im cutting crabs everybody is into fish.

For the next 2 hours we had non stop action and everybody suddenly had a smile on ther face despite the howling east north east winsds.I really didn't keep track how many fish we caught but I had OVER 15 keeper size fish my self wile retaining my limit of 4.Everybody else on board caught more then there share also.We fished 2 drops and the magic depth was 70'today.The tog were fom 3 to 6 lbs with a 7 lb.whitechin being the biggest on the day.Not bad in my book for a 2 hour bite.

With Seas still building and quite a few manly rogue waves cresting at 8' we all had enough and told John lets head for the barn at noon time.Another great trip on the little MJ,it was especially nice to fish with Capt.Anthony of the Charter boat Baara anne again.Anthony is a real gentleman and decided to jump on board and give Capt.John a hand and work deck today.Sorry fellas no pics today as it was just to evil out there to be farting around with the camera.

The chins are chewin from Brooklyn to Montauk so get out there and get some,You cant catch them behind the keyboard!!!

Had a very nice day today on my rig with fellow mods Brian/Flukerr and Rob Pavelick, banging away at the tog on my local inshore grounds. Made but one tiny wiggle on the anchor for the day and though we had to pick thru a ton of just-short toytogs, we happily put together a nice limit of good fish to 5.5lbs, while returning at least 20 other keepers for another day. Good fishing, in close, with a flat ocean and no wind - what more can one ask for? up

Solid trip Today on the Celtic Quest

Today was the Noreast Mod's trip on the CQ. No need to talk up Capt. Desi, I think that by now we all know the quality of the man and his tog-hunting abilities. He told us on boarding that it was a might tough yesterday - honesty always goes a long way toward building trust.

But we also trusted his desire and skills to put us on the fish and were well rewarded for that trust. He steamed out, far to the East, to try some drops that he felt would give us our best shot at some outsided fish. Mission accomplished - we put at least 75 keepers in the boat to ~8lbs.

The weather was as good as the fishing, with maybe a 6" chop. Maybe less. This was the first time I've ever fished with Desi that I didn't need Long Johns and three sweaters to stay warm. Couple the conditions with the irrepressible Capt. Paul and Chris working the deck and it was a happy day for all. You won't finder a nicer group of guys (and gal of course!) to spend a fine day on a boat with than the moderating and executive staffs of Noreast.com.

See below for some pix of the results. John/Reelfisher beat my fish for the pool by a gnat's eyelash, followed REALLY closely by Ralphie/Rodwinders fat tog.

A great time, hosted by our leader George "The Late Inning Tog Killer," on what I honestly believe is the finest tog-hunting boat on Long Island.

Best, Lep

Pete, that pic of you looks perfect. Now aren't you glad Desi took his time to get it right WinkSmile?

Like Pete said, it was an extremely enjoyable day, from the weather, to the company, to the food and the fishing. Once more, thank you very much George upup!!!

Little bit of a late report, covering last Saturday 11/21/09.

Had my two regular crew with me for more inshore work out of JI. Hit three pieces with multiple re-anchoring jobs on each for a total of only 10 keepers. Well, nine in the box and one 6.5lb fish that I foolishly tried to lift into the boat and had the hook pull thru its lip. I gotta get better glasses, I swear I saw that hook in his jaw. . . Anyway, a very slow, picky bite in the morning on the incoming turned totally off on the turn. Amazingly complete shutdown of the bite as soon as the outgoing got moving. The water color was very strange today - a milky green that got much worse as the outgoing came on. That's something ya don't see everyday. Probably still running off and down the Hudson from the past week's storm.

Saw not a single fish come up in any boat near me. In fact they all pulled out and went home early. Either we sucked and they limited early or everyone else did worse than we did. I bet I know which it was. One fella on the radio did say he got a "12 pounder" at Bouy 4, along with two or three other fish.

Scuttlebutt is that the bite took a major turn for the better on Sunday. I suppose mainly because we didn't sail that day. Roll

Took advantage of yesterday's (Sunday's) break in the non-stop winds and shot out to a local reef first thing in the morning. Had fellow mod Rob Pavlick aboard, while Brian/Flukerr, my loyal regular crewman go the flu the night before and so missed the trip.

Anyway we did very little there in one and a half hours of wiggling around and so headed out to a deeper drop - where we did about the same. A toytog here and one there. Pretty sucky. Roll

By 10:30 we had ZIP in the box, totally unacceptable for one such as I. Shades So I made the executive call to hit a drop I've been saving for just such a tough day. As a captain, you need to keep a few of those tucked away. Heading to one after a week of wind has kept most boats tied to the dock, can turn out to be a very good thing. Or not. there's no guarantees with these crazy, tempermental wrasses.

Well, lucky for me, it was the former case and not the latter. After a couple of attempts to get right on it with just the single bow anchor, BINGO, it was lock and load for hours. up up

We put a BOODLE of fish on the deck, plenty of just shorts to "just overs," with a smattering of better fish mixed in - fairly typical of this year's fishing. Easily limited (not that this is any great brag these days!) But I'm thinkin' we certainly approached a "Last year limit" keeper-wise, though we only kept our 8 fish. More than enough for the table.

Took my "this year best" of 8lbs8oz, but briefly tangled with a true togasaurus that made that one feel like a piddler - just nothing I could do to stop him from sawing off my 80lb leader right in front of the hook. Never got a handle turn on him. And this was on a substantial outfit - my Saltiga 15 on the new Seeker BWBC658, not at all one of my new featherweight togging setups. Geez, what a fish. Well, I know where he lives and I'll be back looking to put him away next time.

Don't know when that will be, this week looks terrible, forecast-wise.

Do I look a little tired in the pic? Well, the camera doesn't lie. Head out in the dark, come back in the dark, confront & overcome adversity - that's what successful South Shore late-season small-boat togging is all about! up

best, Lep
