You're either with us, or you're with the poachers. Poachers be warned!

You guys are out of your f-ing minds. I am definitely not with you and I am not with the poachers. I just don't feel it's our place to rat everyone out. You should post all this on a DEC website or something if you feel so strongly. This type of thread detracts from good fishing discussion and deters new members from positing because they're worried about being scolded...LOL.
I'm surprised the administration of this site allows so many of these types of useless threads carry to on. No one here is going to bust your short blackfish fisherman and if you want to educated the public on this matter..... you just did. Now more guys will be live-lining shorts for bass.

New members are going to be deterred from posting here because members on this site are against poachers and people who are breaking the law ??? If thats the case , those are the kind of members this site doesn't need.

You run a charter business, right ? Your not against people breaking the fishing regulations ? What if more people were breaking the regulations and the fish population was negatively impacted. Couldnt that have a negative impact on your business ? Your livelihood depends on a thriving fish population, without that you are out of business. You should be happy there are plenty of people on this site who care about the well being of the fisheries whether it's being against small time poaching or much larger issues that many on this site fight for.

No I don't run a charter boat business. I used to run the Karen Ann. If I depended solely on the money from a charter business I would be in poverty. As far as it effecting my business, no I didn't worry. I didn't have a problem catching fish that I targeted. It's different when you do it everyday. Most of the time you know when and where they will bite.
Honestly, I am not against people breaking an occasional reg especially since the current regs are a joke. I am against poachers though. So many guys are so passionate about policing their peers. i just don't get it.

I am done with this conversation.

Poacher is a harsh term that is better suited to the description of a hunter or fisherman taking endangered species from protected lands. A more politically correct description of a live bait fisherman would be something like fisherfile. That would be something like petafile user of juveniles.

Look up the definition of poacher. Then look up "petafile" if you can find it. Your post shows your lack of both intelligence and maturity.

That is a dopey comment reelfun. Each angler can only take or possess ONE striper per day. BUT, how many will he catch and release during that day...using baby blackfish as bait? More than likely he is killing several baby blackfish in the course of that day. That math just makes no sense.

Wow - Some of you don't get it. My point is that many of the regulations being shoved down our throats are arbitrary, not really based on any resonable science.

So, we are told you are allowed to keep 4 tog now, used to be 10 or 15 (back when). So if it were six right now would you say, "whew, that's two fish too many ?", I doubt it. Don't buy into this crap. So a guy takes a short tog or two or three, does it really matter ? Compared to what ? Who said 14" is important, maybe the limit should be 6 fish at 8" ? It's all BS.

Now abiding by the law IS always the right thing to do, but it is a personal decision. In these days of f'ed up regs, why would you go out of your way to defend these regulations ?

And the guy who accused ME of using short blackfish knows not what he speaks. The last couple of years I pretty much release EVERYTHING I catch, and this includes more trophy fluke, tog, bass, cod, seabass, etc than you will ever see. Get a life....

A spirited thread, no doubt. Focus your anger against those who threaten your right to fish, not your fellow angler trying to scratch out a catch ........

Keeping shorts and the Law.

The problem is too many people think like "PAULH".

That Laws and Rules don't pertain to them. They all "know better", and know what is or isn't gonna hurt the fisheries. Also with the additude they're better and don't have to do or obey any Laws or rules. BIG ego's. Many guys who do break the Laws or Rules do so to pay for their boats up keep and fishing costs. If that's the case tough. The fish belong to the "PEOPLE", all of us. As individuals we can't just make our own rules. That would be redicules. SO, in the mean time try being apart of the majority of law obiding fishermen. As for me I will report anyone I see breaking the Law! Call me a Rat, call me a Snitch. That's jailbird crap! I have reported people catching short Fluke a few years back, Saw them keeping shorts and spoke to them about it, they ignored me and others who spoke up. I got on the Radio and called for DEC, I got replies of "MIND YOUR BUSINESS" and called a "STOOLPIGEON" and "STOOLIE", I responded with....hey the last time I heard that type of words was from an Ex-Con I grew up with! But many others got on the Radio and took up my side of the issue, that they wanted a decent fisherie for their kids! I later ran into the DEC on the water, they were checking catches, I told them I had tried to get them earlier, and what happened. I looked back where I was, with Binocs, and saw the POUCHERS were still there fishing, and pointed them out to the DEC., who then ran over to them an caught them! Made my day!! YEP...call me a SNITCH I'm proud of it! Not enough people man up to it!

What we need to show

In order to get the regulators off our backs, one of the things that we can potentially do is to show that we can practice conservation without being told what to do. Using a juvenile blackfish, which takes forever to grow, to catch a striped bass, is not the way to do it.

JC3096

No offense taken; and yes, I just started fishing for 'togs last month and absolutely love it. In early October, I got my first two. Prior to that, i did quite a number on the porgies over the summer. The reason I'm such an expert is because I've been reading about the lives of fishes since I was a little kid. Watched lots of National Geographic, for example. Here's a 'tog that I took last week, on the Snowgoose II; 17" long and about 4 pounds. Had one of the fillets last nite; unbelievable!

Striped Trash

I don't think stripers are "trash," by any means. I think they are a great gamefish, and I'm excited about going for some really big ones in the spring (my largest ever was 38" long; maybe 22-23 pounds). However, it isn't worth using a 'tog as bait for anything.
