Definitely wrong.
The point is, you don't need to use short fish, and short Togs is an extremely egregious crime in my book.

I think its wrong to harvest a short of any species for any reason. If you do it and get caught you deserve the fine that you get. I know there are some guys out there that will complain about people keeping short fluke, blackfish etc. for the table but then have no problem using a short for baitRoll

I also agree with Hunt'n'Fish that using illegal baits should disqualify fish caught with them in tourneys and for that reason I dont fish tourneys whiere this is likely such as bass tournaments.

"Definitely wrong. Porgies are one thing, the bottom is practically paved with them at certain times of the year, and the limit is 40 fish"
Hey Crunchy that is a very ignorant statment you made there.

How can you say it's ok for porgies and not blacks? thats fish racism". Also where do you get your info? the limit for porgies is 10 fish on a private boat not 40! downdownFingerConfusedReally

We should sick the Honorable Rev. Al Sharpton on all of those blackfish poachersToungue

Guys keep a couple of shorts for bait, get over it and mind your own business.

There are MUCH bigger fish to fry and this is what you are worried about ??

I guess with that statement you obviously condone that activity, and maybe even partake in it yourself....Roll
It's everybodys business to report ILLEGAL activity if they see blatant violations.....Roll

........imagine the way society would be if everyone just "looked the other way" and "minded there own business" when they saw illegal activities taking place.......Roll

I wouldn't "look the other way or mind my own business" if I saw someone stealing from someone, breaking into someones boat or house, mugging, raping, shooting, fighting, etc, etc, etc.....so why would I do it for guys breaking fishery laws and regs..............FingerFingerFingerFingerFinger

........inform them if you can.......up
........report them if they continue.......up

Not helping us

Whoever was trying to use that tiny 'tog as bait for stripers(?!?!) wasn't helping us at all. Recreational fishermen are being hit with the increased size/reduced bag limits, shortened seasons, etc. When things like this happens, it only gives groups like Pew the ammunition that they want to change the entire Atlantic seaboard into a marine petting zoo. Anglers who do this need to be ostracized from our community, and shunned by 'recs who actually want to help their fishery stay alive.

Rest Assured...............

it is NOT just short blackfish being drifted out there. The porgies/seabass/fluke are also being targetted as baits by these guys. It might be easy to mistake a bergall for a blackfish (although I'd bet they ARE blacks) but you can't mistake a short fluke for anything else. Porgies and seabass are pretty easy to ID as well.

As for the Riverview or any other bass contest where these tactics are employed, how would the committe be able to DQ a fish brought to the scale that took a short bait??? Unless they are right there watching the whole thing it is pretty impossible.

For the rest of us we can only hope one day it comes around and they get theirs.

Image problem

When psychotic environmental and special-interest groups see stuff like this, they think that all recreational anglers are poachers. That is why these imbeciles don't belong in our community.

As far as bergall are concerned, I could NEVER mistake a bergall for a blackfish. It's VERY easy to tell the difference.

How can you say it is only a few fish? These guys are ignoring this regulation and are probably ignoring others as well, such as the striper keeper limits. They might be selling their catch to local restaurants illegally as well. I guess that is acceptable to you too...

Eels, worms, bunker, snappers, bergalls, peanuts, herring, plugs, jigs, killies, poppers, gulp, bucktails, etc....

If you cant catch bass with the above methods and have to resort to using shorts of our best eating fish in the water then you shouldnt be bassing, hell, you shouldnt be fishing.

I always had a hard time "ratting".. Hard for me to actually make the call.. But the more years I fish, the more I understand how doing things like this destroy our fishery and it is starting to piss me off enough to probably make the call if I see someone out there totally disregarding our regs.

What our regs are meant to protect mean nothing if we dont keep them.

"Tautog reach maturity between two and four years of age, at sizes of seven to 12 inches. The optimum size for egg production has been estimated at 14-16 inches, and mature female tautog contain 5,000 to over 600,000 eggs *depending on size). During spring when water temperatures reach about 48 Degrees F, adults migrate inshore to spawn within estuaries or nearshore marine areas. Spawning reaches a peak in June and may last throughout the summer. Tautog primarily spawn in pairs, but under certain conditions they may spawn in groups of one female and several males. After a display of courtship, that includes nuzzling and rubbing of each others flanks that may last several hours, the spawning fish move upward rapidly and release their eggs and sperm near the surface. The buoyant eggs hatch in about two days, and after about three weeks the larvae undergo metamorphosis, becoming juveniles and settling to the bottom to begin a demersal lifestyle."

Based on the numbers in this article. If you kill one baby female blackfish, you just potentially killed a minimum of 5000 more blackfish in 4 years time. Then whatever females spawned from those 5000 eggs, the number they would have spawned in another 4 years. Say 20% of the spawn were females.
1000 (female togs) x 5000 (eggs) = 5,000,000 eggs in 8-10 years from when you killed the baby female.

Obviously they have predators and im sure these numbers arent correct, but the cycle is correct and if you kill shorts, youre definitely killing the future of our fishery.

Bottom Line: Killing shorts = Very not cool

I think I would call it in now if I would see it.

Oh, yeah....I'm calling if I see it, and hopefully, the poachers will wind up in jail where they belong.
