I tried the new thumper jig in dorado and did pretty well with it at Montauk.I didn't get any keepers all shorts.
I went into causeway on wendseday and Chuck showed me one and I said what the hell I'll try it.It was the 5.25oz size I believe.I changed the hooks to smaller ones. The jigs have some really good action to them. They also sink very well.Everyone on the boat was usind 8-10oz sinkers and I was able to get down with 5.25oz.I wasn't staight up and down but was able to hold bottom and jig it.I was holding just as good as everyone else.I also out fished everyone else.I thought for sure I was going to loose it rightaway. At $10 they are a little steep for fluking.I will buy more though and just try not to use them around sticky bottom.

Hey Donald!!! You've got to come fishing with us and demonstrate your technique for jigging them. IO look forward to it.
With all the nay-saying that every new lure seems to generate when first introduced, its good to find someone that has an open mind and a willingness to at least give the newest stuff a shot and give honest feedback.
Kudos!

Anytime pete just give me a call. Our buddy Gus was quit amazed at the way I put a beating on them yesterday.I bought some bait that Gus said wasn't working the day before and I was tipping the jig with them and they attacked it with a vegence.

HI:
Just got back from Canada. ran a customers boat for GBFT and Halibut. Zero on the Giants. Lost two was as close as we got. Got one decent halibut over 100. I wanted to go ober to an island thats 60 miles off the beach but a Hurricane scrwed up teh fishing. AARRGGHH. I'm going up agauin to two weeks to try again.
Oh, the COD suck down the THUNPERS like crazy. One problem was the small hooks. I will cahne them out to 6/0 or 7/0 for Cod. For Halibut, I'll switch out to 10/0 circles.
Color the THumpers Pink or Green or Blue. They seem to produce the best.
I used my Doormatter express bait rigs too. Thats a 8-10 ounce CHROME BAll with a 6 inch leader on the ball's swivel to a Circle hook and a slab on Mack fillet. 10 inches above that on a 5 inch dropper loop to a T'ZER and anothe circle hook. This HIGH bait worked bect with a Pink T'ZER and a slab of Mack or Pollack about 6-10 inches long.
I'll be going up again and will try out some more rigs on teh Halibut. On the Giants I'll stay with my 6 inch Blue/Pink Bally Squid palstics on my flexible squid bars.
I thought about trying a THUMPER trolled ssslllooowww for small mediums but teh boat owner said........NNNNNOOOOOOOOO. Lets get a couple in the boat first. OH WELL<<<<<<<<<<

I've been fishing both these jigs (Shimano and Braid) for the past 4 months now, in Pacific waters. A few observations:
- For the bottom-fishing aficionado, I think these jigs definitely have their place - especially if you enjoy light line / spectra fishing. I've had days where bait outperformed these jigs, and other days where everyone on the boat wished they had a jig like mine. On one trip, a lotta the deckhands were laughing at the jig (calling it the LooseAnus). After a few nice Lingcod and a whole lotta reds, nobody was laughing at the end of the day.
- It takes a while to get used to the action (slow-to-medium wind from the bottom); when you get bit (for me, usually 10 - 30 feet off the bottom), keep a steady wind going (no spastic hooksets). The Lucanus has much smaller hooks, which seems odd / counter-intuitive. But Shimano swears they work better, and like the company or not, you have to give these guys credit for the amount of testing they do on their products. In my unscientific testing, however, I'll admit I haven't noticed much difference
- Color definitely seems to make a difference (depending on time of day, water color, etc.). For the life of me, I couldn't get bit on the red one, so I switched to blue and the difference was amazing. I keep three colors in my box, and that seems to do the trick.
- I'm reluctant to spend the $200 for the Shimano rod, but I'm leaning that way after trying a bunch of sticks and not being happy with them (mostly Calstar Grafighters in the 700 - 800 range).
One thing for sure, I'm having a lot of fun fishing these jigs.
