IS THE MONOCHROME OK OR SHOULD I GET THE COLOR? DOES THE COLOR MAKE THAT BIG OF A DIFFERENCE? $499 MONOCHROME OR $999 FOR THE COLOR BOATERS WORLD IS HAVING A SALE AND I WANT TO BUY NOW WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK
I own a 182 monochrome, very happy with the unit.
For a $500 difference I would stick with the monochrome.
Color is nicer to look at, but not necessary.
I would rather invest that extra $500 into a better quality fish finder or some other piece of equipment for the boat.
If you are putting that machine under a hardtop or even canvas, make sure to get the model with the EXTERNAL sensor.
The internal will work intermittantly under a glass hardtop and very well under a canvas top, until the canvas gets wet. And that's when the signal will get degraded to an internal-antennaed unit. This according to Garmin's tech support people.
Make sure you factor in the price of a BlueChart chip for your area too.
I just got home from using my 182 monochrome to come across some shoally water south of Matzapizza to a haul-out ramp I've never been to before.
The unit and BlueChart cartography was worth its price in Gold. 100% effective.

I have the 162, which does not run off the map-chip. However it accepts the CDROM map data (MAPSOUCE).
Iam not sure if the CD cartography is an option for the 182 but if it is,
IMO, this is a better set up b/c you can have all the charts, tides, etc on your computer as well as the GPS.
This enables on to create routes on the computer and then upload it onto the GPS. Furthermore, you can take a route that the GPS recorded (while you were on the boat) save it on the GPS and then upload it to the computer.
Further still, (and I am not sure whether this is dependent on the CD cartography set up or to all units regardless of the cartography option [CHIP vs. CD]) I can run my GPS indooors off my electrical outlet as it came with an AC to DC converter.
Finally, if you choose the CD option. On those rainy windy days when you would rather be fishing you can look through the charts on the computer and identify places you may want to fish. Of course, you can do the same with a paper chart.
The CD option provides other advantages as well. For example you do not have to worry about damage to a chip and replacing it, the computer software can calculate distances....say if you wanted to go trolling in the ocean and you know your fuel burn for your engine...you can calculate how much fuel etc, etc.

I have the 188C and love it.Garmin has a new color unit, 172C (?) for $700.00 and change. Not sure about that price but I'm in the ball park.
For the buoy markings alone, the color is worth it and not to mention the colored contours and easy to read depth markings. Color units are worth it.
Just my $.02 cents
BTW, Cap at Freeport MArine told me that Garmin well have an upgrade again for the BlueChart in late spring so hold before you send 'em out.
Have the older Garmin 180 mono now-good unit but lost the screen in some lighting conditions! Purchased the 182C at the boat show. $819.00 from Consumer Marine (no tax)and about $125.00 for the chart. Of course I haven't used it yetbut I am sure it will be a much better unit due to much better charts, better visability and many more usable functions (i.e. moon and tide info) also it will hook right up to my old antenna, power cord and mounting bracket. Very little work and no added expense in that area> Also I have an extra antenna and bracket!

P.S. Any chart of the Great South Bay area is outdated by the time it is printed!
Well hipshot glade you bought the 182c I did myself. Also if you go to Garmins Web site print out the cupon for a 100.oo rebate w the mail in of any old loran or gps not even working. I got my unit for 799.00 and 116.00 for the chart. Plus the 100 rebate I would definetly get the 182c. The Garmin is a 16 bit color and has one of the best color displays available at that price. By the way every WAAS Gps is the same the only diffrence is the processores and displays and features. So northstar , garmin , Simrad work all the same but one does it faster. So for the 1400 you save buying a Garmin the only diffrence between the big boys is the speed it processes at. Get the color youll like it better.
Garmin Rebate
I second the color also unless you have an open cockpit. You would not regret it as just the bouy colors will make it worth it. I do not agree with using a plotter as the only means to navigate in adverse conditions but, it gives you a second reference when you need it the most and are in full guard mode!

I have the 182C and my father-in-law has the 182 monochrome. In using both of these units, I have to say that I'm glad I went with the color - it's so clear and easy to read at a glance, in all lighting conditions. This is particularly helpful when you are running a trip for any extended distance that you are unfamiliar with -which I have occasion to do now and again. If you are running in waters that you are completely familiar with most of the time, I don't think the issue of monochrome vs. color is that big a deal. And the price is right on the monochrome - it normally retails for $699, I believe. I was able to buy the color unit for $899, because West Marine was running a 10% off sale when I purchased it. Both of these units are excellent, given their size, and I think you will be happy with the 182 monochrome for the money that you are paying for it. The color is really nice to have though, as others have mentioned, for markers, depth contours, etc.
thanks to all for the help it sounds like i should go for the color unit. i am going to use it on a 3207 aft cabin carver on the fly bridge which is fully enclosed in canvas. i will be using it mostly in local waters but i do go to block island at least once a year, and i hope to go further now that i have a boat that will make it possible. thanks again for all your input!!!!!
Nice lookin' rig! If you can buy a boat like that-you can go for the color! Better to go with the bigger money right away than say "AH SH-T" a few months later! "WHY DIDN'T I GO WITH THE COLOR UNIT"!
Hipshot
P.S. Oh Yeah-you are going for $300 more but the chip is the same price!
Joe , look into the Standard Horizon CP 150C .Its a Power-Boat report and Practical Sailor best buy and its 766.00 at Port supply and has a 50.00 mail in rebate. Rich
