Easy tonto, it's not that easy to tell a gw from a mako. Yeah, I know, you should know how, but a lot of guys who have never seen a gw could make that mistake. It's happened before during tournies.
My guess is that if it happened, they thought they were bringing in a mako.
Still a shame. Know how to id them. GW's are becoming more common up here.

you are kidding me, look at the mouth/teeth configuration, the fin shape and placement, the color of the fish and the shape. Just because it happened before and "they thought it was a mako" is
,not a reason to blast a guy that says they shouldn't be fishing if they don't know what they are fishing for and especially in a money tournament. I can't believe that someone would defend such a stupid move if this did in fact happen!
I agree, if you cant ID what your fishing for you have no business being out there. If someone did bring in a white I can imagine the fines being enormous. They are federally protected. Shark fishing is dangerous. Too many yahoos out there who dont know what the *&^% they are doing. I got a big boat so lets go out there and just give it a shot with no one on the boat who has ever done it. Good way to get killed.

I fished the tournament....saw the biggest great white of my life, 20 feet behind the boat.... must have been 1500 lbs.
It is true that someone brought one in!! It was not a mistake on his part... he was announcing on the radio that he had caught a great white.... but all of us listening thought he had released it!! no one thought he was bringing it to the dock.... even at the captain's meeting it was re-iterated multiple times that this was illegal.
Not only was he arrested, his boat seized by the DEC, charged $25,000 fine but he was also charged with endangering the welfare of a minor because he brought the fish on the boat with his 6 year old on the boat!
I'm not sure what this guy was thinking or why he really didn't realize how serious the implications of his actions were...... but what about the others on his boat?? Wasn't he fishing with anyone who had the sense to clue him in??

Sounds like the exact type of jerkoff I was talking about!!! Shouldn't have even been out there. Such a shame!!!! Too bad you don't need a license to have kids.
We fished that tourney a few years ago, and someone brought in a protected species, thinking it was a tiger shark.
It was all kept very quiet though, and the biologists there took advantage to get samples from the shark they don't usually get and I don't believe any fines were levied. As I recall, the boat even fished the next day.
