Many of you have been reading about the Town of Brookhaven Shoreham Beach Fishing Ban. The New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing has put together a petition that you can sign at
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/shorehamban/
Please spread the word and encourage others to sign up and be heard as well. I want to thank people like Willie Young, John (rpsurf5), Tom (tiderunner70), Stan Hentschel who owns Rocky Point Fishing Stop, John Skinner, and others who are putting up a good fight over this issue. There is a lot of work still to be done!

Also, in addition to signing the on-line petition, if you are a Brookhaven resident, please print out the following letter, put your address on it and sign it and send it to Brian Foley. Also encourage your neighbors to do the same regardless of whether they fish or not. Your tax dollars are going to the politicians and they are denying access to the resources you pay for.
Thanks !!

Dear Town Board Members:
The Town of Brookhaven has 153 miles of coastline and a population of 448,519 with only 14 areas to go fishing legally.
Recreational fishing is the number 1 pastime in the United States. Saltwater anglers are estimated at 10 million individuals in the United States. Salt and freshwater fishing combined add over $60 billion to the U.S. economy. Many town residents find walking along the beach and fishing one of their favorite pastimes as it is affordable and beneficial to their quality of life. Yet one board members zeal to benefit a few, has made a public statement that anyone going fishing through Shoreham Town Park property would be treated as a criminal.
Why has the town closed Shoreham Park on September 1st , 2008 to all users? This clearly benefits a few at the expenses of many residents.
I find the fishing policies of this board to be repressive and whose purpose is put into effect to benefit a few wealthy shore front home owners, so they may have their own private beach.
Sincerely,>>
Delegate of the New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing
This is important guys and girls . What one town can get away with, makes others think about what they can get away with.
Keep up the good work.
Willie
50 signed by brookhaven residents is a very large number. politicians realize most will never sign a letter. so each letter from one of there constituents counts for around 60 people. i believe that miss bonner only won by 2600 votes last election? very close margin for somebody who does not support all of her constituents. just a select wealthy few. those letters definitely need to be mailed individually as soon as possible. being that you live over by stan i think it would be a great idea for you to bring the letter to him. or you will have to meet up with one of us to mail them out.
thank you,
tom farrell

its good that the article shows that the fisherman are not going to back down on this issue. it also shows a slanted twisted view from an attorney who happens to live right in that neck of the woods. seems that he happens to be one of the people who wants to keep it as his own private beach.
