MS-PJ ~ Kevin B-day NS trip ~ 9-17-12

MS-PJ ~ Kevin B-day NS trip ~ 9-17-12

After building a rod for my longtime friend Kevin – long time coming – wife surprised him with it for his B-day fri as well as an instructional guide trip = so we made plans to get it wet on the weekend. Sat a No Go due to heavy NNW wind – so Sunday it was. He hasn’t fished in a decade or more and never like this.

After seeing some reports of Albies and big blues decided to hit the NS again. Haven’t fishy NS in more than a Month. Plus he has beach rights in PJ so I wanted to show him a few spots near his beach.

Met @ the ramp @ 6:15
----------------------------------------------------------
Wind wNW 10-15 – slowed to 10by noon.
High @ noon
Water 69-71
Air 60-75
----------------------------------------------------------
Well I was hoping it would be calmer in the AM…but with all that wind yesterday the sound was a little rough- especially for his 1st boat trip. Good thing he’s got a bit of Salt in his veils through sailing and ocean yaking – so didn’t have to take it too easy on him . Still it wasn’t the best tide to start with – dead low..

Stayed in the sound for poking around for about 15 min .. but too rough to introduce light tackle. Reluctantly we heading inside. Had some bite off by snappers and small blues.. he even had one on ~on off..but it was very slow for sure.. explored the are marked a huge pile of fish..but no hook ups..hrs passed by without a fish. Not a very good outing and was feeling humbled

Decided to do some casting practice under the wind in a spot where maybe he’d hit a schoolie..maybe. took about 10 casts and he casting like a pro.. he started to place the lure on the spot soon after that
In the 5th hr. Finally had a hook up. His 1st striped bass! Thank goodness. No better way to christen a rod than with a bass. Even if it was micro.

Hit the same drift about dozen or so times for 2 more bass before the tide slowed..

High noon headed back outside to find much better conditions compared to the early am.. had to make it back for a soccer game so We just hit a spot on the way back near his beach. 1st drift as soon as the we hit the bottom we had hits.. not too soon after he hooked into a very nice 14” feisty scup. Then a small black sea bass – Action every drift for an hour or so with a mix of different species.

Tried on more spot I like for a bigger on but called soon after to make the soccer game.

He had a blast. Can’t wait to get him into some big fish or more solid action to really hear that drag sing.

Nice Nice day
--------------------------------------------
Total: all released
- 3 Short Striped Bass ( 15-18”)
- 10 Short Black Sea Bass ( 10-11”)
- 2 Scup ( 13-14”)
- 2 Blues ( 15-16”)
- 1 Fluke ( 16”)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
- Many sailboats out by noon. Lots of traffic. but spread out…
---------------------------------------------------------------------

nice to be back north –
maybe one more shot South this weekend…
already too many fall projects to do on my list.

GS B-Day ~ Weaks ~ 9-6-12

GS B-Day ~ Weaks ~ 9-6-12

Took the day of for my B-day to weakfish. So busy @ work that I wasn’t planning on having the day off..but my Boss really coaxed me to take the day. Lucky Me. Watched the weather closely to see if it would be a no go.. but the weather pushed through the day before to leave what appeared to be perfect conditions coming through. Finally a calm morning. Haven’t had calm conditions for month.

To the ramp @ 545 – sun just showing.. headed out with the commercial guys. Only 2 others @ the ramp.
Over cast.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Wind – NE zero to 5. Switch to SE 10+ by 1:30
Air 75?
Water 76-74
Low @ 9?
-----------------------------------------------------------

Left the ramp to GLASS conditions…spotted bait on the surface – Cruised @ 27.1 MPH ..smooth Highway like ride to the 1st spot.
So Quiet .5 drift - nice drift… but a slow start – took a while to boat that 1st fish. Should have left earlier as last time.. I just like to stay until the sun comes up all the way…
8 am cruised to another spot.. found a few more fish here n there small. One on the 1st drop. Less than 10 boated so far... Better bite.

Made a third move looking for a bigger fish.. Glad I did. Had hits right away..fish small Black seas bass…one right after the other..felt like bees buzzing around the bait as soon as it hit the bottom… made a slight adjustment to get the bees off and Bam..nice fish on! ….drag light as the reel slipped more than the cranks by 5 to 1.. ..just cranked…til a Saw a 2 foot flash just surface…and sound.. up and again.. grabbed the net..but quickly threw it down as I decided he would be released..just hand grabbed him in for a quick pict and Measured 23.5” – Beauty. Released with a gentle swim away..nice. Biggest weak of the season for me. Great b-day gift.

Staying here for sure …A little slow of bite but many keeper sized fish were mixed in. boated 5 more plus some shorts n blues. Had 2 surprise guests - a snad shark that ticked me into thinking I had a very nice weak and 2 Spot which I thought were porgies @ 1st..
Threatening skies @ one point early ==I would have to call it a day a few times when Some fog rolled in near 9 but broke up & a big line of storms headed down from the north but broke up when then hit the sound and split into 2. Not a drop fell..

Winds did pick up a little by 1 out of the SE - so called it to beat the waves tha were sure to follow.. just made it back before the chop slop started again.. only trailer left .. Man I wish I could fish weekdays all the time.. Still it ended up to be a Great South B-day.

--------------------------------------------------
Total: All Released –
6 keeper Weaks ( 18-23.5”) most 20”
26 short weaks ( 13-15.5”) most 15”
20+ Small Black Sea Bass ( 8-10”)
1 Sand Shark (30")
3 Small Blues ( 14-15”)
2 Spot ( 8-9”)

GSB ~ Labor Day Weakend 2012 ~ 9-1/2/3-12

GSB ~ Labor Day Weakend 2012 ~ 9-1/2/3-12

GSB ~ Labor Day WEAKend ~ 9- 1/2/3 -12
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
9 -1-12 :
Hit the south for weaks again. Sat
Nice Morning light winds out of the NNW – a little over cast so it took beyond sunrise to see the sun.

----------------------------------------------
Wind NNW @ 5-10 – building to ESE by noon for some real =nasty conditions
Water 75-77
Air – 83
Sunrise 6:19 – Full Moon
Low @ 6
-----------------------------------------------

It’s been a fast drift / slop chop / windy weak season this year
A lot of drifts @ 1mph or better. So I happy to see the finder say .7 when I got to my spot.

Had Weaks on the 2nd drift..small. stuck it out until the outgoing tide gave out and drift really died as did the bite.
Had about 6 weaks boated all small.. not the best bite. Not the best the tide either.

Hop scotched form spot to spot looking for a few more…
finally found a few and had some nice marks – all to myself for an hour. had a pretty good bite for 2 hours nailed a nice 22.5” keeper on a jig – he hammered it and too off.. nice drag peel on light tackle.. just got him in as the leader snapped – a quick pict and a nice release. Definitely one of the nicer fish this year.
Switched locations as few other boats began to crowd in and the bite slowed to almost a halt.…found another pile and managed another keeper @ 18”…

by 10:45 the boats started really closing in on all sides..and wakes increased as did the wind and the drift was 1.5…too much – bite slowed = time to go.

Back to the early spot..by noon – had a 5-6 more fish and missed a really really nice heavy bite/ fish..the wind began to pick up similar to last week –
so I left to try to beat the buildup out of the East.. made it ½ way back and the seas were rough as heck again.. So rough ~ I though the motor broke @ one point heard a pop and then a louder sound ? slowed to check it as the wind/waves battered me ..I had to crawl to the back to investigate. The Motor cover latch broke free..and the cover was 3” off. Relieved that was the trouble, I locked it back in place and did a slow put put back to port…..better to fish another day than be in dry dock for the rest of the season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Total: All released - Actual count--------------------------------------------------------------------
2 Keeper Weaks ( 22.5”, 18”)
30 Short Weeks ( 13-15.75”)
2 Black Sea Bass ( 10”-11”)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
- nice B-17 Fly over

Forecast for ENE again…supposed to be light winds in the AM..but E wind…any East wind =NG
Called Dave late last night—Said he was in…. but I had a feeling after we spoke he might not make. Celebrations late into the night as I suspected..

Go to the ramp and the flags were blowing and in the dark I could hear the waves lapping the shore line…not good..
Waited for Dave even though I knew he would be a no show … was ready to scratch the day..but then the sun started to to illuminate the water – didn’t look so bad??... decided I was already there.. so headed out alone.. 6:10.

----------------------------------------------------
Wind E @ 17mph steady..and building.
Water 77
Air 68
Sun up 6:20
Low @ 8?
-----------------------------------------------------

Should have kept it on the trailer……rough deep waves on the bay …cruised @ 17 mph and was falling into them with the wind @ back I was going the same speed as the blow. Easy to get there…not so much on the way back..,,

1st drift…under a ominous sunrise..Black water with burning red – orange glow and dark clouds above…this was worth the short time out there..picked up a short 15.5” Weak at the very end of the drift. NICE~ success. No skunk – now I go home…but I gave it a few more drift –ok around 10 more.. didn’t do much but still had 2 more short and 4-5 other bites.. I was o inspired by the sunrise and being a lonely soul out there.. I started singing the star spangled Banner…LOUD like if I was singing to a stadium on opening day.. it was great. Not the singing but that feeling of Freedom. Very fitting that Had a fish on right @ the finale !

Heading back @ 8…. Slamming and pitching the whole way..got up on plane once and was skipping like a stone across a less choppy section – good work out on the legs.. almost lost the bait board though – it jumped out of the holder spun in the air and landed back in the holder upside down…nice. Slowed back down to crawl after that..returned by 9am.. great morning.

-------------------------------------
Total:
3 Short Weaks ( 13-15.5”)
4-5 missed bites
-------------------------------------
