GSB ~ BRRR,COLD Front WEAKS ~ 9-17-11

GSB ~ BRRR,COLD Front WEAKS ~ 9-17-11
Late report....

to the ramp @ 6am --... YET another morning where I knew the ride back would be little rough ~~ another East wind...in my face..but this time very heavy..rough all day.. Wind against tide as well..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7:40 L
sunrise 6:34am
Wind ~ E @ 10 to E- @ 20 knots right after sunrise... Cloudy all day -Air 52-62? -- Cold in the wind -- that's a 20 degrees drop in 24 hrs..
Water 65-70
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This time last year -- this exact week end my outboard gave out..and I missed the end of the season by Boat.. so could nt wait to pass the scene of the crime ... a little chop as I passed.. quickly it became a larger chop as the sun came up.

drop in a few spots for a fast - 1.7mph drift... was thinking the conditions were too swift and I'd be lucky to put a fish in the boat..

by 7:30 -- found the weaks..1st short @ 15.5" on board== Trip success!.."oK - GOT ONE" now I can go home...but I didn;t
braved the choppy rough water washing machine..wind in the face -- was this a nice Fall in Mid OCTOBER day? I was wrapped up like it was..
Drifts were Fast and re-drifts were a slow smashing >6 mph back to try again.. But I still stayed for quit a few hrs...fish were semi biting..would find 3-4 -- then nada -- moved around.. but near a consistent drift by 11am...1 -2 fish per with many mixed fish..and few double headers of Sea Bass and Weaks.. nothing big @ all -- 1st outing with out a keeper weak...

finished @ 12:45-- done with being washed around -- slow ride home again -- mostly just sailboats around enjoying the wind with many races going on.

Total:______________________________________________
very slow @ times...
23 Short Weaks.. ( 14" - 15.75")
15 Black Sea Bass ( 10-12")
1 Lizard fish 2 Sea Robins (micro 12")
2 Snappers ___________________________________________________________
~ Used my smart phone on the boat for the 1st time - love it Radr - Navionics - Radio - awesome
~ nothing broke today...

THis has been the roughest September I can remember --- usually I get a few dead calm days -- not this year just a Slam ,Slam fest
but the fishing was good -- so I'll take it!

Looks like that might be it for me and weaks in 2011 --
Heading North next weekend - home turf Scup/ blues/ bass?
whatever I can find.

GSB ~ Long day - WEAKs Grind out~ 9-10-11

GSB ~ Long day - WEAKs Grind out~ 9-10-11

Late report.... ( @ Jets Game on 9-11-11 -- all day event not home til 2am -- What a thrill to be there..best game I Have ever been @ - 27-24 victory. )

to the ramp @ 6am --... another morning where I knew the ride back would be little rough ~~ but this time an East wind...in my face..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9:33 H
sunrise 6:27am
Wind ~ NW @ 8? ...Switched and increased by 10am E-NE@ 12-15 +-
Very Cloudy all day - nice blanket from the sun -- but rain lurking..
Air 81
Water 71 -74
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

WICC Weekend = Go south for GSB weaks = Couldn't wait to get back to weaks yet again
Calm in the am with a ripple on the water -- breeze in the face --- nice cruising conditions 27mph @ 4k..all the way.. haven't had a smooth ride in the am in a few weeks.
Still not as calm as I would like...but good enough. Forecast for east wind = rough ride back again...

Stopped in on some $$$ spots in years past-- nada..small bites.
High tailed to where I had weaks last week...

Took a few drifts but hit a small weak @ 7:30..then a whole bunch on Black sea bass...missed a nice bite early too..

moved around chasing weaks for 5 ½ hrs...Slow but consistent bite....hits are better than no hits...had about 15-16 shorts ….
Made a move while the tide and wind began to collaborate with the bite ..
Found a few piles of fish – finally a good bunch of marks--( mostly blind fishing all am)
6 fish in one drift....largest was a 19”

6-7 drifts in the same area until the fish moved away...but glad I found em like that.
Best drifts of the day..
Big rain cloud started to move right 2 me-- rain got there before it ..covered the DF/GPS – put on a rain shell ~~~ time to go -packed up and went to split..@ 2pm

on the way out ( ahead of the rain.( spotted another pile in a new spot ) – stopped on the spot-- Fish on – weak....so I stayed for another hr and fished the pattern in the drizzle...managed 1 fish per drift....then called it quits @ 3Tounguem....

Long Day - but I ground out a bite...and 3 keepers..

yep rough ride back as predicted.....rough enough for the fillet table to bounce up out of the holder and land upside down back in the rod holder –LUCKY...didn't notice it until I got back...

Total:______________________________________________
33 Weaks: ok bite.. very slow @ times...LONG day 7am-3pm
-3 keeper sized Weaks( 16",16",19") All released
-30 Short Weaks.. ( 10-15") most 12-13"
15 Black Sea Bass ( 10-12")
4 Lizard fish ( 2 large ones)
10 Sea Robins (micro -8-12")
Only 1 Snapper ---

SB ~ TS Lee - 2 Session B-day Rain trip ~ 9-6-11

SB ~ TS Lee - 2 Session B-day Rain trip ~ 9-6-11

Was hoping to get back to weak fishing for my b-day -- took off to fish - I always try to fish on my B-day no matter what.. I have had luck the last 6 yrs with pretty nice weather - TS Hanna in 05 was the last time it was dismal and it wasn't as bad a today..

No lighting -- just rain and alot of it -- heavy @ times..1-3"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Low @ 1pm
Wind ~ Wind switched around today NE 10-15 & S-SW 15-20
Weather - Dark Gray clouds all day , sideways rain @ times.. clear @ times as well..
Air 60-65 ( thats a serious drop in one day) -Crisp & Cool..
Water 73 -76
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Session 1 - AM

Caught the last 3hrs of the outgoing to the water @ 10am.. waded in .... tried to find a spot under the wind to cast a fly.. found a few spots but not were the fish were.
and I didn't want a fly in the face a B-day gift..
so back to get the spinner & headed into the wind...

blasted off a few casts and knew it would be a challenge to feel the bite @ times...so I would wait for a wind switch and hit it...
as long as the lure was in the water I had a shot..

5-6 casts had a hit! -- nice to feel a bass hit again...it's been a month..a few casts after that and Had a 22" schoolie SLAM the lure and nearly knock the rod out of my hands...zzzzzz..was surprised to see he was on 22"...
picked up another schoolie a few cast later...

decided to move because of the tide....,,found a HOLE - filled with schoolies...was hoping for a larger fish but just micros..& blue bite offs..
also found some clams laying along shore washed up...threw them back in..

by 12:30ish the tide slowed and snapper really took over.....Lunch time...maybe should have kept the clams for lunch?
a little wet and cold - went home threw the gloves and clothes in the dryer and got ready for the PM

Session 2 - PM

Grabbed the bike this time...and switched to my reddington wade jacket off to a new location.
Back to the water @ 4:30 for the incoming..again tried the fly rod -- even worse @ the next location..so the wand stayed on the bike..

Not as much luck this next spot...very few hits and most small bites only managed one snapper and one robin - both snagged --
usually this spot is $$$$--- not today

Got Really wet when my Reddington Rain/Wade Jacket disintegrated - the shell pealed like sun burnt skin away from the shell as did the pockets and flaps as it were made of paper..
started about 1/2 way through the trip...too late to go back...got Soaked because of it..I own many redington Fly items and they are usually top notch..disappointing @ best..
looks like they will getting a letter and a jacket back...

All in All a GREAT B-day -- had every place to myself - Solace might me a better gift than fish...might be..

Total: ______________________________________________
11 Short Bass ( 15-22")most 17"
1 Snapper Snagged
1 Sea Robin Snagged
2 clams
1 Oyster cluster
many bite offs
many missed hits

GSB ~ B-Laborday WEAKend ~ Calamity Trip~ 9-4-11

GSB ~ B-Laborday WEAKend ~ Calamity Trip~ 9-4-11

Late report....

to the ramp @ 5:30 sharp again x4....wind a little hard again from the S-SW for the am again ..Tough rough ride --... knew the ride back would be brutal again ~~ forcast for heavy wind SW x3..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9:52? low
sunrise 6:23am
Wind ~ W-SW 10-12+ right away...never let up increased to S-SW @ 20 - gust to 25
Air 81
Water 73 -76
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Wanted to get back to weaks again... but I knew it would be rough this AM..half contemplated scratchin the trip and hitting the N-SHore..Maybe I should have:

One of those days were multiple thig just went wrong ...

List of calamity:
- Forgot the tie downs were on and tried to sink the boat @ the ramp..
- so rough the last few trips -- 2 plastic clamp-on rod holder had enough and broke a big air jump land @ the same time.
- Bow Rail also Broke...
- and Windshield has a crack...Did I mention it's been Rough this August? ( a few weaks ago I had the Transducer bracket snap off in rough seas....)
- Get the spot -- 1st drift-- go to restart...BEEEP??///- steering locked up?,,,,( felt a little panic = brand new motor)--steering broke? - nope a dock line got wrap around the prop...perfectly coiled...cut it loose and it un wrapped easily....started right up no damage. "scariest moment of the day Award"
- Hooked into a sand shark and as I was about to pull the hook from it's mouth his tail whips around and shoots the plies right out my hand into the deep..
- not even 2 fish in and I developed a Blood blister as of a result of over fishin the last 4-5 trips and wearing a hole in my spinning hook set hand...had to use conventional all day...
- GPS was acting crazy all day...NO signal?,,,,then it would come back.. noticed one of thwire missing a cap..nice.

1st drop had a nice fish on but lost it...
had to do much searching...Tryed many,many different drifts...
Finnaly landed a little weak @ 7:41am = a successful trip...
broke the ice...now to find a keeper...
very slow pick....but a superb mixed bag....a few time I though I had a keeper( the shark made me thing I had a really nice fish)..one was a nice fighting 14.5" Kingfish...(went on ice)...now I really needed a Keeper .. because if I am cleaning one I might as well get another..

took a few hours and 19 shorts...but near noon I had 16 and a nice 17.5" ( which went in the box.) -- good thing because noon was it for me had to get to my own B-day party by 3pm...

- Had put in some good Karma before I left since it turned out to be an OK bite....Towed a kayak with my same Malibu Mini X that had drifted way of course == put him right on the spot..
REALLY Really Really Rough ride back again.. drove slower 18mph on the way back .. Riding 2-3' with some 4-5' chop and consistant sloppy 2'+....

Stuck it out for good day (despite all of the early mishaps) and very Mixed bag.

Total:______________________________________________
21 Weaks:
-2 keeper sized Weaks( 16",17") kept the 17"
-19 Short Weaks.. ( 10-15") most 12-13"
3 Kingfish ( 10", 11" , 14.5") kept the larger
3 Fluke ( 10-14")
3 Black Sea Bass ( all around 11")
3 Lizard fish ( 1 large one)
1 Sand Shark ( 24")
Only 10++ Snappers. --- ___________________________________________________________

Happy Labor day -- I should be on land until next weekend..my body aches from all the slaming of fish+waves this month..

GSB ~ B-Laborday WEAKend w/ Dave ~ 9-3-11

GSB ~ B-Laborday WEAKend w/ Dave ~ 9-3-11

long day~

After Missing last weakend because of IRENE- Couldn't wait to get back to see if the WEAKs were still there...met @ the ramp @ 5:30 sharp again x3....wind a little hard from the W-SW for the am again ..not as bad as last time but bad enough... knew the ride back would be brutal with forcast for heavy wind SW..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
8:52 low
sunrise 6:21am
Wind ~ W-SW 10-15+ right away...never let up increased to S-SW @ 25 by 11-12
Air 80
Water 73 -76
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1+" chop on the way ~ BOUNCED all the way there @ 18 mph slower ride...but better for our backs.....on the spot ..... Went anyway -- figured we would have the am or half the day atleast-- ended up staying until 3 pm

couldnt' find the weaks for 3+ hrs... Dave had a monster fish on early -- that broke off 1/2 way up..( this one will be remember for a long time ) kept moving...tryed different / new areas / old spots == 1st fish was Cow nose ray - 15-20lbs....then a blue -- lizard fish and finally 2 mini WEAKS.... very slow 3+ HRS..

tide switched to incoming around 10:30... and found a great drift chocked full of weaks ( 3 double headers) cosistent bite for 2-3 hours.. waiting it out payed off big -- 4-5 fish per drift -- many fish of keepr size or greater mixed in...banged away @ them .. using a dead stick with heads to in dicated a bite ... then hit em with jigs.. worked very well... but the dead stick out fished up both..30 fish alone..

REALLY Really Really Rough ride back again.. drove slower 12mph on the way back .. Riding some 6' chop and consistant sloppy 3'+....

Stuck it out for Another AWESOME day.

Total: Combined ______________________________________________
50-60 Weaks. ~Just great.
50% +were keeper sized Weaks( most 16-17") many 19" mixed in.
4-5 were 20" + Keeper Weaks..1 Larger fish @ 22" ( kept a 17" & 18")
1 Black Sea Bass ( 13.5") 2 lbs
1 Lizard fish
1 Cow Nose ray
Only 10++ Snappers. --- ___________________________________________________________
- Had a scary moment on the way out -- hit a large LOG? pc of wood that shook the boat and the steering as we hit it sideways in a wave left a wood chunk ont he lower unit -- but no other damage..
-DC-3 WWII with invasion stripes flew by 6-7 times today - great sound
-rescued 2 paddle boarders that could get back home...asked for a tow-- towing wasn't an option..so gave a ride back to thier swank water front home...not a bad friend to make..
