GSB ~~~ Rough Water WEAKS ~~~ 8-25-12

GSB ~~~ Rough Water WEAKS ~~~ 8-25-12

with the WICC this weekend and the Battle on the bay nowhere in sight..
I was set for Weaks SOUTH….the strong East wind had other plans..

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WIND – relentless EAST wind – Calm in the Am..5-10…to NASTY +++ by 10:30am..20+ blowing..
Air 77?
Water 79
High @ 6?
Sunrise 6
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Met Dave @ the Ramp @ 5:20ish. Clear conditions. With the slight glow of sunrise behind us.. made our way out into the still dark bay under flat conditions.. nice ride out. Took it slow @ 1st… too dark to go fast. Good thing as off in the distance. I could just make out a boat with NO running lights ripping across the bay..and then Another…yikes.
I just finished telling Dave that I wanted to take it slow until I can see better.. just for this reason.

Got to the 1st Spot just as the sun peeked up.. East wind just picked up as we got there..quick drift already 1mph. Not ideal…but by the 2nd drift – We had Weeks in the boat – 3rd boated Weak was a nice 19” keeper.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total: All released:
10+ Keeper Weaks ( 17-23”) most 19”
50+ Short Weaks
2 Snapper blues
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of the rough long day….I was gasin up @ the local Citgo…went to step off the boat and slipped fell Hard on the concrete..OUCh.. half way to the ground I was thinking…this going to hurt…I guess I was I little too rocky to be walking on land on a slippery deck..just laid on the ground for 20 seconds or so to assess the damage before I moved.. Bruised hip , road rash and bruised elbow.. nothing too bad – but I will be moving a little slow @ work this week..

GSB ~ --+-- Summer Weaks Marathon –+-- ~ 8-19-12

GSB ~ --+-- Summer Weaks Marathon –+-- ~ 8-19-12

With the New rod ready to roll and all bait and gear preset.. I was off to find the weaks again after skipping a weekend.
I hope they are where I left them…
This year has been great - with multiple reports from all corners of the island.

On the water @ 5:25… Saw the OLD Osprey @ the dock….was wondering why it was there?...just as I shoved off. I saw why..SUNK> @ the dock..looks like she’s headed to dry dock for a while.

Got about 5 min out and realizes I had forgotten my sunglasses. Back in quick and back out even quicker..
--------------------------------------------------
-Wind – slight NE @ sunrise building to 10-15+ by sun up. Choppy day
-Air = COOL am full gear for the ride out –then shorts by midday 80
- water 70-77
- Low @ 630?
---------------------------------------------------

GLASS ride out…but by the time I drew closer to my spot ..choppy.
Stopped on the old spot 1st .. dropped in and bites right away..1st WEAK in the boat in 5min of lines in.. small.
Even though I had Weak. Decided to continue on with my plan in mind instead..

Well… didn’t go so well.. MAYBE I should have stayed put….
Was heading back slowly. Still trying multiple spots with little success.. only 1 small black sea bass in 2HRS.. and nearly zero bites..
decided reinvestigate a spot I had fish 2 yrs. back..and BINGO..found em. Nothing huge.. but great ACTion..many marks on the finder as well.. 2 fish in had a nice 17” keeper and a short… pretty fast bite so switched to some Jigging fun- no wasting time rebaiting.. back down .. fish ON or bites right away.. hot bite lasted for 2hrs..
slowed by noon to zero drift…switched back to bait and still picked @ fish..
Awesome Weak day ~ decided to head back to the dock @ 12:20.

Caught a ride ½ way back behind a HUGE Sportfish plowing down the nasty chop for somewhat smoother ride. Glad he was heading my way…when we parted ways – stopped for a minute..right near my old spot so I decided to send a jig down just to check..Bam fish on again.. 1:30 under bright sun and lots of traffic?? Ok.
Did about 30 short drifts in .5mph ~ perfect .. had another 20-25 fish and 4 more keepers including a tail snagged 20” fish which I thought was a monster weak by the way the drag was ripping out..

Arms shot and the bite slowed a bit –Finally called it @ 3pm Stayed way too long…as I left ‘em semi- biting

Bumpy ride back yet again..no plow on this leg.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total : all released
15-20 Keeper WEAKS ( 16” – 20” = 9 of which were 18-20”)
60-70 short weaks ( 12-15.5”) most 14-15”
5-6 Small Black Sea Bass ( 9-10”)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Camera got FRIED today as I went to turn it on .. I didn’t notice that e Water proof case developed a leak and it was filled with water…Water + Electric= Fry
Water must have been in there in for a while as it was all rusted out inside.. not that many picts survived but some did..

Can’t wait to get back out there! Got to love Weaks!

Home in time for the Jets preseason.. fish n FootbaLL!

SB ~ Rod Check trip ~ 8-19-12

SB ~ Rod Check trip ~ 8-19-12

Been having a tough time this season with rod building.. last 3 builds broke 2 like twigs. All st croix 2 in the same spot.
I pretty sure it’s my fault now and not the blank..( one was $120 blank = ouch) live and learn…
Back to the drawing board. Bought a cheap Blank (under $20) when I bought the $120.. not a St Croix. Not even sure what it is.. sensitive 8-17.. Did a super-fast build on it this entire week…split grip, Wrap it Fri night & 1 coat epoxy Sat AM..pushed it into to service for the afternoon once the rain cleared.. GOT to test it as I really want to use it for weakfish in the AM…

Hit the water Via Bike by 1:30
-------------------------------------------------------

-High @ 12:30pm
- Water 75?
-Wind NW @ 10+ breezy
- Air 75-78?
--------------------------------------------------------

Turned out to be really really nice by mid-day. Felt a little like early fall.
Took only the new rod – no back up. If it breaks…I think my rod building days are over. But I don’t think it will.

Hit the water Via Bike by 1:30 – NO Swimming BEACH CLOSED due to high Bacteria levels….hmmm.
Since I wasn’t swimming and I’d be in waders, figured as long as I didn’t drink any H20 – I’d be ok.
went for a short trip anyway.

Not many people around.

Water nice and HIGH..Stopped on my 1st spot anticipating that 1st cast.. let her ride and was very impressed by the cheap blank..much more responsive than expected.. 4-5 casts in had a bite and then a Micro bass.. decided to move.

2nd spot .. 1 st cast – bam fish on – Robin… nice to get it really bent to test it. So far it has passed.. 2nd cast robin..
3rd cast robin.. just about every cast produced a robin with other following the hooked bird in… rod continued to do well even if it was only robins..

3rd spot More robins..

Called it a success and rode back home to get all of my gear ready & cut bait for the early Am Weaks trip

Done @ 2:30

--------------------------------------------------------
Total:
1 Mirco Bass ( 15”)
10 Robins..
--------------------------------------------------------

DNF - weekend - RONk Tornado + another St Croix break...8/10-11-12/12

This weekened was a bust -
Weatherwise: - we had an F-0 Tornado ( 0-85 mph) come through From Bohemia to RonKonkoma - 450 wide and traveled 4 miles..

The National Weather Services has confirmed that a tornado touched down on Thursday in parts of Islip Town and impacted an area from near Great River north to Ronkonkoma.

According to the report, the tornado is believed to hit the ground at around 2:06 p.m. Friday and had sustained maximum winds of 85 miles-per-hour, with a path width of 150 yards and a path length of 4.5 miles.

The National Weather Service said the tornado touched down on Widgeon Court in Great River and tracked north when it lifted near the intersection of Ocean Ave. and Gary Way Rd. in Ronkonkoma. The track was across Connetquot River State Park, Bohemia County Park and Bohemia.

According to the weather service, the most significant damage occurred between 8th Ave. and Feuereisen Ave. in Bohemia around 2:11 p.m. The report said multiple trees were uprooted and thrown on to power lines and several homes in Oakdale and Bohemia were damaged as a result of fallen trees. In addition, there were several eyewitness reports of the tornado moving north along the Connetquot River and also in Bohemia.

The National Weather Service had no reports of fatalities or injuries.
It was the first tornado on Long Island since an EF-0 was spawned by Tropical Storm Irene, and the first non-tropical cyclone tornado since the Islip Terrace EF-1 in July 2007.

lots of FOG AM and rain Sat. and Sun. HHH major humidity + heat.

also had to help my sister move ALL Sunday.

Sat- decided to stay ashore and build rods.. finfished to ST croix @ 6 only to have it break as well while putting line onto it on the driveway...same place as the SCIII - same way..terribly disappointed adn out nearly $400+ for all 3 rod breaks with nearly zero fishing time on any and much effort in building..what a waste.

crap weekend,.

GSB - Long Day of WEAKS ~ 8-4-12

GSB - Long Day of WEAKS ~ 8-4-12

Couldn’t wait to get back to the south shore in search of WEAKS again
Knew I had a good shot on Saturday AM - just as long as the fog wasn’t Thick..

To the ramp @ 5:25am
------------------------------------
Wind 10- 20 SSE
Low @ 730
Air - HHH 86 + Strong Southern Breeze kept it cool.
water - 78-81
Sunrise 5:52
------------------------------------
Set Out just before sunrise – very hazy and slight Fog in the distance as Fire island was missing. Very low clouds hanging overhead.
Slight chop with the wind already started before the Sun was up.. not a super smooth ride on the way out but not bad.

Sun up was slow to arrive trying to burn through the fog / clouds
Cruised to the old spot I found the Skeetugee @ 2 weeks ago…..and nothing – just a few bites, one Snapper and one Great big run off… but that was it…very disappointed that they moved on.. – searched around the area but still nada for 1.5 hrs.…should have left earlier. It was only 7:30 So I Still had time to find ONE..
That 1.5 hrs. of quiet ..Felt like it might be one of those GSB days where its picky fishing’..

Moved out to greener pastures… ½ way to another spot I had in mind – marked some fish/ bait in an area I never fished before. Stopped on top of them.. and bam.. Fish on.. WEAK!!! = Success.. very small but still a weak.. right back down and bam another fish on.. still small.. nailed 7 small weaks in a row on the first drift..

Headed back up and had only 1 on the next drift…kept @ it and had very active drifts and then very slow drifts. Adjusting didn’t make a difference—just hit or miss.
Still it was a very good bite.. took a while bur finally had a small Keeper..17”. one in 20..

Had a pretty good bite = Stayed on the fish for a few hrs. ..around 10 decided to search another area to see if I could find some larger weaks..
Made about 3-4 stops until I found another good drift and some larger fish mixed in - had a double header of a short and a 20”. Even with the growing boat traffic – fish were still biting. My Original Plan : I was going to leave @ 10:30 and hit again Sunday…but the bite was good enough that I decided to just grind it out all in one day because the wind forecast for Sun wasn’t good.. ( a great decision as it was a Blow SUN with AM FOG) – by Noon the boats were getting thicker and Closer. So close I could read the captains drink in the cup holder. Time to move..

Headed back to the NEW spot …the bite was even Better?. Nailed a double header on the 1st drift. Drift after drift – very consistent.. got in a good groove.. 4 more keepers. Rockin and Shot by 2:40 ..decided to leave them biting and Call a GREAT Day! Wish I would have kept a better count but it ended up being a much better End than beginning.

---------------------------------
7 Keeper Weaks ( 17.25"-19.75")
50?-60? Shorts ( 10-15.875") most 12”-13”
1 Bluefish ( 17")
5 Snapper blues ( 8-10")
1 Black Sea Bass ( 11")
--------------------------------
- snappers poppin on the surface
- A few Blueclaw drive by.
- Sail boat races all over the bay.. Had one come straight @ me while I was a drift ~ only to turn 90 degrees @ the very last moment.

Best place to be on HHH day.
