MS ~ Quick rainy Trip ~ Washout Weekend ~ 7-28-12

MS ~ Quick rainy Trip ~ Washout Weekend ~ 7-28-12

Was planning on hitting the GSB again in search of weaks…but got a text from AD that he’d be in town but couldn’t make the 4:30am roll call.
So changed gears and threw together some N-shore gear..and met him @ 7:30 near the ramp….outside ~ since the new Parking sticker was implemented.

Weather was for rain around Noon… heavy N-E wind upon arrival..snotty looking sound.
As you could imagine .. not many boats @ the ramp @ all..

----------------------------------------------------------------
Wind: NE 15-20
Water 76
Air 72 – cool…cool enough for pants..
H @ 7:20am
------------------------------------------------------------------
In @ 7:40 and under way .

Marked some fish on the way through the harbor.. decided to drop in on them –AD picked up a small blue right away. Not really what we wanted but it was calm in there.. Decided to try a spot that AD lost a monster fish a few seasons back and he wanted a 2nd shot @ it .Ahab.

Left the harbor with threatening skys to the South West – check the radar and Storms just to the south were Nasty but staying south.. so into the rough sound we went ..SLOW..and birds working right away. Eeked over to them – marked many fish.. dropped in .. more blues. Another Plan B spot..

Headed west surfing waves all the way with an eye on that Southern dark skys..No rain yet..just a lot of spray if the boat turned the wrong way into the wind..
So on went the rain coats.. AD stopped to buy one @ Wallyworld….and was having trouble putting it on…looks Small? Way small…turns out it was a MED ..in a 2XL package… So I squeezed into it and he wore my Columbia roomy XL – Slim fit on me but it worked for now.. So funny. Lots of laughs over this..

Got to the spot and it got instantly Ugly…6’ waves and the wind picked up..plus that dark south sky got darker..got one line in for 2 minutes…but just ended up turning back @ a very slow crashing 7mph..layed down as we got closer to the Harbour so we just stuck with the 2nd PLAN B..made 2 drifts with a pretty good bite.. Scup Blues a robin and a few scup…Until the Lightning started.. GAME OVER.. time to go in..
just then AD noticed the oil light was ON…beep beep…pretty sure it’s the Maint check…double check it and yep, it’s the 100 hour alarm..220hrs - time for an Oil change /maint.

Only hit by rain when we got back to the ramp…@ 9 am. Many big Flashes of lightning as we rolled away…
Went to the Diner for breakfast instead..

--------------------------------------------------
Total: all released
3 Blues ( 15-20”)
5 scup ( 10-12”)
1 Fluke ( 15”)
1 Robin

Air - cool @ 73 but humid 70+%
----------------------------------
I was ging to fish this morning but decided tojust change the oil instead because I always forget how long a process this is.. and we had to be @ my parents by 3 for Noelle's B-day party..as well as meet steves kids for the 1st time..2 instant neices and a nephew..

started @ 11:20

finish @ 2:20pm..

I was taking it slow and stopped for lunch..

had a small delay when i lost 3 of the cowl screws in the brush.. found 2 ... stopped looking for the 3rd becasue I bought extra last season for just this reason...also the top back screw was missing from vibration?...seems that I loose one a season from the side cowlings

glad to have it done for the upcoming Weak season.

GSB ~ Summer Weaks Recon ~ 7-22-12

GSB ~ Summer Weaks Recon 2012 ~ 7-22-12

Should have prepped during the week for my 1st WEAK trip of 2012..but didn’t think of it..(1st week back for Vacation had me running around) … So I took Sat to Prep all of my gear and it took All day @ a leisurely pace.. Everything is in its place ~ jigs, rigs, and bait I was now more than ready to kick off the 1st S-shore trip…I just the weaks were..Since this year has been a very different – I figured I had a good chance at finding them earlier than years past….even so, it’s still 50/50.

Clear Clear morning with planets showing bright in the sky as I did the last minute geared up in the dark. on the road @ 4:53 as planned..
to the water 5:22 right on time..but really could have been 15 min earlier..

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sunrise 5:39
Wind Ne @ 5 until 7:30 am -- then zero - switched to SE by 10:20
water 71 -75
air 59 !!! to 82 ( 23 degree jump..)
Low @ 7? 8?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Under way @ 4K into FLAT as glass / clear sky conditions – Not another boat in sight, perfect.
Cruised past the break spot from ’10 – still feel bad about the old faithful 70…..2nd yr with 90 and so far it’s superior.

Was on my way to spot I had in mind form last season… but on the way I passed on old spot that hasn’t been productive in 2 seasons..
Since this was a recon trip..Decided that to give it a quick 2-3 drifts…had a few Bites in less than a minute – a very good sign picked up a small Kingfish on the 1st drift. At the beginning of the 2nd drift, I picked a WEAK nearly right away.. Just over keeper size @ 17” --- NICE ! within the 15 min of lines in.. Success!

Where there’s one…….picked up 2 more shorts on the Next drift . Had a pretty good bite going and very, very good slow and steady .5 drift.
Even though I found a few, I still was thinking about the original spot I had in mind….but “Never leave fish to find fish” Kept ringing in my head..… So I stayed on it..and picked up some smaller keepers( 16-17”) and a few more shorts..
Glad I Stayed… . started getting better sizes as the sun was up near the 720 mark. Hit a really really nice fish Drag was going nuts.. being to light side I had a hard time moving this fish…took a few minutes and saw a larger flash – but not as large as it should have been for the amount of Drag… Snagged a 20”+ fish sideways.
Still a very nice weak – but 20” sideways?? What size would the fish be if it were lip hooked…?
Fish were aggressive. Had another 2 on 2 more drifts as the fish were slamming the offering.. picked another fish just under 19.

The 2 Hour bite really slowed and I started to pick @ fish – still they were here…0.1…not moving @ all. So I decide to head off to the destination I had in mind I in the 1st place…Still a RECON trip and I needed to know if the pastures were greener…and I needed to get there before the South shore Parade started..

Got there and – NADA….well no weaks but some Sea Bass and a Sand shark… ReConed a little more but decided to High tale it back to the more productive spot as the wind picked up out of the South..

Back on it but it was too late.. parade was just beginning and the fish hate most of the locals..Still had a few more fish despite it..a very slow pick with only small fish around one spot…as well as another Kingfish and an Actual SPOT ( my 1st ever)

Stuck it out 1hr more than I should have – called it @ 11…but the GSB CHOP/ SLOP was on..Had to drive 10mph for ½ the ride back just keep my teeth in…also used the clip from my Plier/ scissor combo to hold the crack in the windshield from getting worse ( happened last season over here) the traffic was Extra Large today…I think I saw only saw 1 other Boat that was 18’ everything else was 30’- 40’ pushing tsunami sized wakes..
Next time I should exit earlier.. but I more than likely won’t…BECAUSE it’s WEAK time!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total: ( all released)
9 Keeper Weaks ( 16"-20.75") most were 16-17" only 2 were 20"+
8 short Weaks ( 13-15.875")
2 Kingfish ( 13" , 15")
2 Black Sea Bass ( 10" 11")
1 Snapper Blue ( 11")
1 Sand Shark (24")
1 Spot/Croaker (6") 1st one ever
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Blue claws all over the top water..
- eel grass mats here and there but not too bad yet..
- Very cool out – beautiful weekend - felt more like Late Sept than July..

SB ~ Wrong Tide - right day – 1st N-Shore Blue claw 2012~ 7-19-12

SB ~ Wrong Tide - right day – 1st N-Shore Blue claw 2012~ 7-19-12

~ No matter what happens today - I fish today ~ even if it's in a puddle for 5 min..
Didn't have any gear in the truck or anything ready to go.
So with tide being Dead low @ the same time I would get to the shore.. decided to take the bike out for a ride..

without having anything ready cost me exactly 15min.
to the shore @ 7:10 ..not bad.

-----------------------------------------------------
LOW @ 6:30
water 76
air 77?
wind - zero...( bugs)
----------------------------------------------------
Very overcast night = No sunset = no extra light or OT.
Didn't really care as just being here is enough.
and with the overcast rainy looking weather + the dead tide
even better , I had the entire place to myself..

Bugs started right away ..Rode like the wind...to get them off and to get to my destination. Lines in by 7:30.

Still and calm waters as far you could see.... Found a fresh blue claw Carcass on the shore…1st one I have sighted this year
3-4 cast had a hit. Hooked up with a big Winged Robin. We see so many of them it's nice to look @ them for just how interesting they are. Their Fins are just really cool.

Had another robin follow in all the way to my feet - and just sit there…Even though they can look cool. I didn’t want robin after robin.. So I put everything back on the bike and set off to a different location – tide just barely started to move…Had a nice hit…Blue.

Stayed on this spot for the rest of the night – fighting off the bugs w/o spray again…had some just didn’t want to put it on. Wasn’t too bad..
Had a semi consistent bite of small blues…which was fine with me.. didn’t expect much – so this was a bonus.

Stayed until 8:45pm…Rode like the wind back as well.

-----------------------------------------------------
Total:
4 Blues ( 15-18”)
1 Robin
5-6 missed hits / bite offs
1 fresh blue claw carcass
-----------------------------------------------------
- New basket worked great - quick to detach- saves time..

Had a sail boat pass close and I could hear the Capt teaching his young mate how to sail..great to listen to..so quiet I could hear them on the for quite a lomg distance...

Nice Night.

Thanks G-ma.

SB ~ Scup & Robins Extra Day off ~ End STAYcation~ 7-16-12

SB ~ Scup & Robins Extra Day off ~ End STAYcation~ 7-16-12

Had a great Long weeks’ plus vacation @ home.( aka STAYcation)
We had a list of things to see for the entire week.. each day was a new or old place to visit.
Made it feel like a very long week..
Took off one extra day to Fish since I didn’t fish the entire vacation..
Good thing because I heard the trains were delayed on this very hot day.

When I was getting everything ready to go there was zero breeze @ home. I hoped it would be better @ the water.. if not this would be a short trip..
Arrived @ the ramp @ 10:40 and a nice breeze greeted me…
Only place to be on a HOT HOT day,. Only 4 trailers @ the ramp as well.. nice.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10:15 am H
Wind - nice Breeze W @ 10
Air - 94 HHH felt like 100+ on land. Cooler on the water – thanks Breeze
water - 75-77
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shoved off and passed a bunch of terns diving.. the water was FILLED with bait.. and way below fish stacked up…nothing biting yet & the tide wasn’t moving yet so figured I’d come back in an hour for the mayhem.

Hit a few spots…and found some marks on a nice sliding side drift to a drop.. picked up fish right away.. Robins @ first ( I hate it when the 1st fish is a Robin) then a few scup? In the middle of nowhere.. nice slow drift .5 kept me over them longer.. 1 -2 small fluke mixed in with the occasional blue also grabbing on if I came off the bottom too much.. a very consistent bite… so I stayed a little longer than an hour..

Headed back to the bait…NADA…and the stacked marks below..GONE… ODD.. this is usually a set up for great action. Drifted it anyway for ½ hr – NADA.
Oh well that’s Fishing..

Headed back to the same spot and bite continued…I like the consistency ,but didn’t stay long because I really wanted/hoped to find some surprise yellow fin trout.. so I hit a few different spots…and yep more small Porgies and robins @ each drop..

Switched to a bucktail/gulp combo with a 3/0 for better hook ups that I have hidden in the leaning post. Didn’t have any bait except for that – which was enough. Would of done much better with some spearing.. maybe next time. Didn’t care as I was just enjoying the day off with cool water running in from the open scupper to keep my feet comfortable.

Hit a few more spots with similar results –
Called it a Day @ 3:30
Wasn’t as comfortable as I got in the truck @ 105 showing on the temp…
-----------------------------
total
8 short Fluke ( 15 -17”)
8+ Blues ( 15- 24”)
25++ Scup (10 -12”)
35-40 Robins
1 Spider Crab.
-----------------------------
-Big barges pushing back and forth from PJ all day.
-Birds working with blues on the flats all day
-Pretty calm as day.
-Decided to Use a Broken/shortened custom rod I built as a bucktail spinner..work better than expected the thicker front grip worked very well for single handed bouncing.

Nice Day great way to end a weeks+ vacation. The extra day made a huge difference.

Friday ~ last day before my week+ vacation ( Staycation)
Since the tide was perfect ~ Decided to kick it off with a quick trip after work.

-------------------------------------------------
low @ 830
water 75
air 88? - warm HHH
wind 0-5 SW
-------------------------------------------------

in the water @ 7 - right on scedule today.. even after a 10 min delay on the LIRR. forgot the bug spray?.. I HAVE 20 CANS ~ and not a one in the truck searched high and low..ripped it apart..NADA.. goin natural.. could be a short trip..

Small bait running under my feet - very small..1/2 - 1"

Too an hour to get a bite - BIG sea robin - so big the hook barely got into his thick bill.. popped off as soon as I got him in.

bugs were not so bad.. not that great - but not terrible..

had a 2nd fish on - BLUe - danced his way to me .. then always popped off as got him to the edge of the beach - good thing as the leader was light 15lb - not a nick in it.

last 1/2 hr - right before sunset. had a 3rd Fish - Small bass..also broke off just I got him in..

nad a after that. Called it @ 830 as the tide slowed..

Never touched a fish today..

Great night - great sunset

1 Bass ( 16")
1 Blue (18")
1 Robin bigger than either.
------------------------------

Sad end note:- Had to put my 15yr old cat to sleep 2 days later. RIP Buddy. Miss u already.. My soon to Be Bro-in-laws Mom died on the same morning..long battle with illness....pretty sad July thus far.

Just a reminder on how each day is a Gift..and never know when it's your last sunset..So savor everyone.

Independence day - st croix scv handle ~ 7-4-12

No fishing this 4th .. Woke up way late and t storms in the am... Too late to make the tides and it was 90+ ..

Decided to get a jump on my top of the line st croix scv handle .. Good thing because it took alot longer than expected had some draw backs with the make shift lathe. Too a while to sort it out and custom fit the rod so it wouldn't spin free from the drill ..

Came out great -- but its the last time I use hypolon handle .. It just doesn't sand well at all

SB PJ MS ~ Steamy, Hot & Slow. ~ 7-1-12

SB PJ MS ~ Steamy, Hot & Slow. ~ 7-1-12

Pretty hot the past few days...Took a break Sat to start building a sweet SCV St Croix Blank. Just hot out -
decided to go Sunday instead... But I think it was even hotter!

--------------------------------------
air - 93? + 80% humidity? HHH day.
water - 74-75
wind ZERO --- 9 am SW @ 10, 1pm W 20 ( storm front)
High @ 9:41
--------------------------------------

on the water by 8:30 with ZERO breeze made in instantly hot. switched to flip flops AsAp which felt like they were on fire..dunked them a few times..good to go...had to keep driving just to stay cool.. I could see a breeze building over the sound form the east.. took a ½ hr to get to me.. if that breeze never made it – I was going to bail out early – it made and I stayed all day..

But it was painfully slow - hit many spots. For minimal results today. Could have fished for blues all day. But wasn’t really looking for those.
Had Ice and a cooler ready for fluke or Scup and one or two small blues upon @ the end…

Never found really any fluke… but did find a pile of nice big Scup - best bite of the day. All to myself as well.. kept 2 and moved to find Fluke in same spot I had 3 keeps last week…but NOTHING there..hours searching nearly but no piles found..and from the looks of the spread out boats in many areas looks like other were in the same BOAT ( ha) .

Decided to just go back to the scup spot… still no one there…hooked up on the 1st drift nice 15”.. had a great bite going until a lost boater came over and anchored right over my drift..asked me Where he was…then they all went swimming..a second boat came over then a 3rd….Blew up the spot..and the bite died.
Headed back to pick up a few blues and try for fluke one more time..

Wind really picked by 1pm and it was the coolest place to be – but I could see the skys darken in CT.. check the radar.. yep – time to beat the storm home – in by 3:33

Just made it home and cleaned ½ the fish before the rain..Which really JUST missed my area..Nasty RED blobs on the radar. Dodged it.
Done cleaning them by 6. And on the grill by 7. forgot how much I like fresh small blues on the BBQ.

total -
------------------------------
8 SCUP ( 12-16") most were 14"
6 short Fluke ( 15-18")
8 Blues? ( 19-20")
20 ROBINS
------------------------------
- Kept 4 scup and 3 blues..1st fish kept for 2012 - my Dad will love the scup for the 4th.
- Broke windsheild - ouch

Pd.
