BROOK to BROOK 2012 w/ J ! ~ 6-28-12

BROOK to BROOK 2012 with J! ~ 6-28-12

I have been trying to get my lifelong friend J out fishing for 2 years now since we connected on my 4oth B-day.
He finally had the time to hit the water on a after work trip.. Was set to meet him @ 7 for a matching 704 high. Forecast for light winds and clear sky’s mid 70s perfect.. prepped everything the night before to save time.. But the train decided to break on the way home FIGURES.. I was FUMING for the extra 20 min they added ~ the only day I need to be someplace.. just figures.. oh well. Calmed down once the train was moving and closer to the station..

Now set to meet @ 7:20… Right on time…I pull up to the ramp…and ..WHAT then? No trailer spots, no regular spots, people Double parked in all of the trailer spots. ? Not ONE place to park.. I was seriously considering parking behind all those that parking reg cars in the trailer spots..
but by the time I went to park ..2 cars left @ the same time leaving from back to back spots just enough for a boat & trailer…squeeeezed it in..
Things now turning around..

On the water and AWAY from the craziness…I have never EVER seen the ramp and surrounding area So packed! Crazy..
------------------------------------
wind Sw @ 9 ( gusts to 12)
Water 73
Air 78-75
High @ 704pm
------------------------------------

on the water @ 7:35pm

Very high tide..not moving yet @ all..Stopped to do some practice casts to get the rust out since J hasn’t fish in over 1.5 yrs and hasn’t had his 20’ CC mako out in 2yrs! Man this guy is busy..Glad he found the time to Go..
Now I had to do everything to get him into a fish..ANY fish.

Made a quick run into the sound. Drop in @ a slope but only one bite..even though we had solid marks of fish and bait .. No Time to wait em out…
FLAT ~ GLASS conditions. Blasted off & Stopped on a spot where I knew we'd have some action.

1st cast…He had a fish on..BIG SCUP. Nice largest of the season thus far..(16”) Porkchop…
He wanted to keep as his Wife said “ you’d better bring something Home”….I didn’t think we were keeping fish so I didn’t plan on it – but we made due with the cooler liner bucket form the drink cooler..Cold fresh water still in it helped..

Next drift.. Blue after after blue … double hook ups.. no bass.great fun.. kept 4-5? of the smaller Yum size 19” for him.
Stayed on em until right after the sun set..840..
Let’s try to find a bass for you..

Blasted over by his house on the water so he could SEMI- watch his daughter via text..

Very slow for the next hour or so…some hits…then I nailed a small Schoolie…then a Med blue on the same drift – back top back..
But drift after drift.. min action..Tide took a very long time to get moving..about 10pm J hooks up with a Nice Fish.. very Nice it seemed as the drag peeled out..but I couldn’t remember if I had switched it back from Weakfish setting?....I think I did...he was using my custom built #1 rogue rod..so I pretty sure I did..but not 100% after seeing the drag peel..so he fought it out right in the mode it was in..I really thought it was just a med size schoolie ..but then we saw it.. NICE Bass! Guess the drag was set right..Hand Grab the 33” fish for Grill for him in one shot..Nice.
He was All Smiles after that.. said he hadn’t had a bass like that in a Decade or more..

Pretty good fishing for a 3 hr trip.

Done @ 10:30pm

Got Back to the Ramp and just as we pull into the dock..We see a Boat on the ramp @ the mouth of the ramp..Half on the trailer and Half on the RAMP ..Smashed down... SMASHED onto the ramp and Motor broke off with transom ATTACHED and was obliterated with parts exploded all over the ramp..…OUCH…Just OUCH>>> terrible sight.. felt terrible for the guy.
Offer some help..but there wasn’t much we could do.. “HE just Said S--- Happens” he had a pretty good attitude about the whole thing..but he might have been there awhile. Looked like the hook broke loose and it Rolled rapidly off the back of the trailer.. Was able to JUST, just barely sneek past him to retrieve my boat. Seeing something like that and attitude he had really Puts things into perspective.

total:
------------------------------
1 Keeper Bass ( 33")
1 Schoolies Bass ( 20")
12+ Blues ( 19-25")
1 Big Scup (16")
------------------------------
- I forgot the Camera in the truck....used my Cell phone but the picts don’t do the night sky , sunset and other scenes justice.

Awesome Night with a great old friend.

SB PJ MS ~ 1st Northshore NORTHERN Kingfish ~ 6-24-12

SB PJ MS ~ 1st North shore NORTHERN Kingfish ~ 6-24-12

little late on the start today again ( only 1/2 hr.) due over sleeping ..Party went late last night 1 am..

Still on the water @ 5:33..a little groggy..

--------------------------------------------
wind NW 10 switched to SW 10-15+ by noon
Air 68 am -82 pm very warm Sun today..
water 72-73
High @ 3:30ish
--------------------------------------------
Hoped to hit the same spot and for a repeat of yesterday’s Bass n big Blue nonstop bite.
Had a Bass on the 1st drift….nice.. but the bite was not even close to the same. Many many drifts for 3hrs..picked a few bass and a few blues…on the very last Drift nailed a another BIG BLUE…great fight..and another perfect corner mouth hook set.. So now it wasn’t the Last drift.. but it should have been took 5-6 more drifts.. but didn’t have another bite..Here today , Gone tomorrow………

Decided it was time to Move out to near the Flukers… Drop down and an instant fish on..came up seeing Silver..scup? …no too skinny – another WEAK???? - No … but WOW:
a North shore NORTHERN Kingfish (14") My first one on the North shore since I started fishing here 30 years ago..That’s 2 south shore species in the same year…that I have never seen up North. Fantastic. Very bold markings on this King and much more Silver than the south shore variety. I remember reading and re-reading about these as a Kid ~ hoping to catch one when we would flounder fish..

Stayed on the drift – Which was Perfect…outgoing tide and a just right incoming wind created a SLIDE drift which kept me perfectly drifting the very edge of the ledges @.5mph.. marked a few fish on the finder, which is better than none..which is what I was finding everywhere else.

Only 5-6 boats out—drifting the opposite way.. Nailed a 22.25” Fluke on the very next drift..Long slow drifts.. and a bunch of shorts.. another Blue @ 26”. Many fish on and off.. a bunch of Robins.. a few had Followers that just wouldn’t give up on the lure in there friend’s mouth ( no Bait involved) - Had Blues do the same thing only more abundant.( too fast for the camera)

Since I had a semi decent bite and a great drift…Decided to try a spot that held weaks a short time ago..NADA..
Moved back after a ½+ hr of searching…but the bite wasn’t as good ..Mostly robins..Big ones too.

10:30am…should of just headed in…but decided to Hop scotch many spots all the past MS….very choppy over there.. Finally found a pile of fish to myself. Nice sizes too. And more importantly Not ONE Robin.. all Fluke, Scup or blues..
Picked a few 2 more keeper Fluke(20”,19.5”) as well as quite a few shorts -=-- so far the best fluking of the season for me = even though I wasn’t really set up for fluking. If I had spearing with me – would of have had 40-50 fluke today.

Water got really Choppy so called it a day – ROUGH ride back past PJ..insane Boat wakes..much better once I passed OFP.

Done @ 141pm...too long should have left @ 1030 after the tide gave out..too much rockin' and traffic -- all the very big Boats were out today..

------------------------------------------
1 North shore NORTHERN Kingfish (14") 1st on the NS in 30 years..
1 Big Blue ( 30.5")
10+ Small Blues (18-26") most 19"
3 keeper Fluke ( 22", 20", 19.5")
15-18?+ Short Fluke ( 16-19.25") most 18"
6 Short Bass ( 19-24")
1 Scup ( 12")
20+ Robins
------------------------------------------
-Water very Clear -- I could see 10 ft down.. tricks you when you are in shallow...made me back out of some places...then I realized it was deep..
- My neice tied a good luck red ribbon the boat seems to be working well.
- Got buzzed by a LOW flying sea plane several times.. thought it would land a few times..

Nice day on the water - great mixed bag.

SB ~ Strong NW wind AM Schoolie bass & Big Blues~ 6-23-12

SB ~ Strong NW wind AM Schoolie bass & Big Blues~ 6-23-12

up @ 4..only to hear rain on the roof then thunder...shoot..had to delay departure until it passed. Contemplated not going since it would be 1/2 way through the tide when I got there..not ideal. plus the wind was breezy outta the NW + I had to be home early to set a party / build a table / yard work / a long list put together by the better half/ etc. for the evening. She talked me into going.."I need a happy husband so go fish."

to the water @ 6:30

----------------------------------------
Wind NW 15-25? - kickin white caps
Air 73? Am ( 85 by midday @ home)
Water 72-73
High @ 3amish
----------------------------------------
Wind in my Face as I shoved off…..outgoing tide + incoming wind = an ugly sound.
Tried a spot under the wind …nailed a small blue right away… moved out and got ½ way when ..I decided I would rather catch blues than get rocked to death today..

Headed back to find birds now diving.. nice.. no one else around yet…nailed a small bass. Thought it would be all blues..
I was wrong.. very. It was nonstop action the ENTIRE trip…which is all I could ask for today. ….had fish every drift. Bass or Blue..in equal amounts. Nothing big but not to small either..good sized schoolies. All Much warmer to the touch..
A few in the 27” range..most 23-24” fish following the hooked fish, fish swiping @ the lure from under the boat..sick.

Stayed on them …Had a massive hit and the line peeled off as BIG Blue shot from 30 ft deep and blasted through the surface .. WHOA..thought he would break the line as he crashed down..only 40lb leader on.. but it held as I had a nice corner set.. got him boat side..34”.. 1st BIG Blue of the season.. great great fighter.

Hooked with another a few passes Later 32”… didn’t come up at all – was really hoping it was a bass..but was another blue.. perfect corner hook again.. this guy was tough. Had to swim him a little after a longer than expected fight..

Kept @ it as the tide really slowed…the bite slowed as well..but not that much ..had a bass just Shy near the end..so close I had to measure him 3-4 times on the slippery deck.

Done exactly @ 10am...Home in time for a nap before setting up for hours..

AWESOMe morning.
----------------------------------------
2 Big Blues ( 32" 34")
20? Small Blues ( 18-24")
1 Just Shy Bass ( 28.875")
20 Schoolie Bass (20”-27.25”) most 23-24”
----------------------------------------

- too fast and furious to take many picts except of fish... didn’t even really stop to drink..

Father's Day ~ Silver and Gold ~ 6-17-12

Father's Day ~ Silver and Gold ~ 6-17-12

Each year I give him a choice of types of fishing. Scup, Fluke , or Bass /Blue…he always chooses Scup. He likes to anchor up ( once) and just sit and relax. I really like it too..Fish or not..
Stopped by swains 2 hrs early to make sure I had everything ready for my Dad .
3 dozen worms and some great stories…one story he told us was about a huge SAND tiger shark that was in the back bays of SB Harbour and caught in 1964. Even brought out the newspaper article. Bought a Ken Swaine Original Fish Art for my Dad as well while I was there. Just an awesome local shop.

-----------------------------------------
Wind ~ ESE 10-20 - stiff
water ~ 65-67
air ~ 70
high @ 10:47
------------------------------------------

Got the Dock 1 hr early – Minimal boats @ the ramp – easy load/unload / parking…I guess the stiff winds were keeping most @ port..
prepped everything and still had nearly an hour to wait… so I just shoved off to check out the conditions in the sound – pretty stiff East wind. Which was ok..as long as it didn’t shift.. My dad ( 69) won’t go out in a chop.. I have to find the calmest place I can..if fish are there great – if fish are not there Great as well.

Sound looked good -- headed back in and fished the swift incoming tide…Nailed a robin..boo.. and then a nice Schoolie ( 20”) 5 min before My Dad showed up..

Loaded him in on… and off we went under very nice Blue skies. The wind made it very cool as well..pants and long sleeves all day. Besides the wind, I believe this is 5th or sixth year in row that Father’s day has been just perfect.

Passed piles of blues and birds diving on the way out – smooth ride all the way to a nice spot under the wind..
Couldn’t get to our regular spot since it was directly in the wind and it looked Snotty..so much so that many many boats had the same idea and were right in a row up and down the shore hiding..even all of the P-boats were there for a short time.
Found a rock pile I never fished before – in a depth I never fished before either…wasn’t ideal – but the scenery and setting were..set the hook and marked fish – but it took a while to get a scup. Even with the Chum pot down..even so – He had 6 fish boated before I even had one.. Same as last season.. We didn’t slay them today but the bite was just enough to keep it interesting. He really liked the Oyster Cracker he hooked – thought it was a neat fish…his 1st ..and when I think about it , I’ve only hooked about 10 or less of those things in 30yrs..pretty rare I suppose.

Slow pick for a few hours – slow pulled the hook and tried to drift back just a bit… and it was even worse.. but that was as much I could move the boat. So we fished it anyway. Still had some nice size Scup mixed in with some really small ones..Drive by hits.

For the last hour – I convinced my Dad to drift a Flat area I knew it he wouldn’t snag anything..or have to worry to much about line management due to the Slow .5 mph drift.. he agreed..
Had a better bite Drifted and it was perfect..on the second to last Drift I nailed an Ultra RARE North Shore WEAKFISH just shy of a keeper…but so Great to see..Many reports of them all around the Island this season. Last drift we hit a solo fluke to round out our mixed bag day.

It’s really Great Fishing with my Dad.

total:
------------------------------------------------------
1 Short North shore WEAKfish ( 15.5")
5 Keeper Scup ( 12.5"-14")
15? short Scup
1 short Fluke (14")
1 Short Striped Bass ( 20”)
1 Oyster Cracker

North Shore Solo Weak~ 6-11-12

I was thinking about taking the day off yesterday - but had a tough time with the weaks Sunday - so i went..
little did I know when I got there.. ALL TRAINS CANCELED> Car struck...
MTA decided for me.. took the day.. but Late to the water by 3hrs,,
Still better to go on this rare freebee day.. good timing.

------------------------------------
wind ENE 15-20 - calm until 9-10am..
water 65-66
high 6 am
air 68-74 - cool in the wind..very cool @ times with the thick cloud cover.
------------------------------------

took a while....an hour? -- but found 1 weak in a huge pile of fish I went through on the finder..bump. bump. bump. bump.. fish on! 17.5" keeper..still too small for me..released.

kept @ it for hours..1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8...never could repeat - both conditions didnt matter..wind with tide or wind against tide but the wind against didnt help catch anything else either..
still had one of everything today..so a good mixed bag slam.
also only 2-3 other boats out was nice - very nice.

even though I only had one...it was a successful trip. when targeting weaks if you see ONE - it's a win.

A weekend I will NEVER forget.

if Dave didn't suggest we stop...I never would have found them.
Thanks.

Total : all released

1 Keeper Weak ( 17.5")

6 Short Fluke ( 14"-18") most 14"

------------------------------------
- Blues all over the top on the way out..

SB ~ WINDY, Rocky then CraZy Stormy ~ Bassin ~ 6-3-12

SB ~ WINDY, Rocky then CraZy Stormy ~ Bassin ~ 6-3-12

Hit the water hoping to repeat yesterday’s consistent day.
But I was sure that the boat traffic would hinder that… I was sort of right..
The wind would really be the major difference today..
to the water @ 10:30
---------------------------------------------
High @ 11 am
Wind WNW @ 15-20+ - Chop n Slop..( 40-50 ahead of the storm--)
water 63-64
air 72-74
---------------------------------------------
Had to wait @ the ramp just a moment – not bad – got the last trailer spot…not like yesterday…
Very breezy conditions…strong tides had moved the channel markers and the Bay constable was out @ slack to move them back..
Had to wait for the tide to get going as well.. got out into the sound and was met by nasty wind against tide High chop and rocking from all the boats out under a beautiful blue sky.. Forecast was for late Storms—so I had a few hours before I had to watch out..

MET the birds working again – tried to play Bass? Blue? Robin? For about an hour or 2? +-- managed one Bass out of many many many more blues than either bass or robins.. too rocky as well.. pitching 4’ on a casting deck isn’t that much fun after a few hours.. Moved away from the birds.. which is hard to do..
Looked for the bunk schools – nothing to see – did find one deep..

Hit another spot from yesterday.. also pitching a bit.. 2nd cast – Bass 26” – nice. Thought I had found em again.. but then it was just blue after blue or bite off. Stayed on the spot until this big power boat runs right across my bow blowing up the fish…
Made a bouncing rockin move east.. – had a nice bump upon arrival.. then it was just blues and bite offs again.. – did snag a good amount of braided lost line with homemade looking smiling bill bucktail @ the end - no leader..looks like they must have lost it recently – brand new line/lure.

Looked up and saw a slightly darker blue sky way off to the NW.. checked the “MY RADAR” ap on my phone( GREAT quick ap that just shows you the weather radar)..yep huge line of a storm sweeping NW -- Headed back towards port – figured I had just enough time to get back and make one more stop and watch it closer to home.. Now my inside voice sad I should beat everyone back to ramp right now as it will be hectic once this sucker really starts to show..
But I stopped – and on the 1st Cast – Nice Bass!....and on the 2nd drift…another.. then a blue … each drift had a hit or someone.. fish really turned on as the front was closing ( isn’t that always the way?) .. next drift – set the hook on a solid hit…ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ – solid hook set…. Fish runs and runs..then comes back and goes under the boat and just sat..for a moment I thought he just stuck me into the bottom and snagged me into something…so put a little extra pressure on him.. took 2-3 three good tugs but he moved out ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…. Kept running away from the boat.. but finally got him in – very similar to yesterday … nice 35” fish… same released as yesterday too.. Awesome..

Looked 2 the sky and decided I had a few more shots….skys now darker and moving over the island…too late to beat the boat traffic back..and no thunder involved… stayed with the bite.. very next Drift nailed another keeper.. just shy of 30”..
Still an eye towards the sky.. hit another keeper on the 3rd consecutive drift…ZZZZZZZZZZ but lost him after the 2nd run..
Still darker skys… hooked up with what I thought was a 4th keeper on the 4th drift…zzzzz. But just shy 27.5”… as I released the just shy fish – a few drops hit my shoulder… I look up – and that seemingly far off Dark clouds were now overhead..

Time to go…Punched it !!!!!!!!! --- Just barely staying ahead of the front … 4 stroke screaming.. wave hoping..
About half way.. the wind hit be like a slap..40-50mph – pushed the whole rig sideways and sound got seriously nasty…like white water rapids.. raining hard --like needles only on my right side. A few boats staying to ride it out.. Had to stop and take a few picts and to find the cans… gunned it into the safe harbor where I waited in line with the other boats..A little crazy @ the ramp..but not as bad as I thought it would be. Got soaked and talked fishing while we all waited.

Cleared by the time I got the trailer in..but I had enough. And Knew there were others cells to follow..

---------------------------------------------
total: all released
2 Keeper Bass ( 29.5", 35") lost another 30-31" half way.

1 Bucktail & line
---------------------------------------------

SB~ June -- Bass? Blue? or Robin? ~ 6-2-12

SB~ June --- Bass, Blue or Robin? ~ 6-2-12

detour to get to the ramp ( and home ) road closed - looked a water main break?..had the entire road dug up & cops on either end..went through the old neighborhood – haven’t been back there in 25+ years…still looks the same.

To the ramp by 9:30am… not a soul around…dreary looking sky..

------------------
high 10am
Air - 69-74
water 64
wind - WSW 10-12 - switched to WNW 10-15+
---------------------
In the water as the tide began to halt… ultra-high tide..
FOGGY as I made way.. misty rain from it.. kept the finder in the box until it calmed – some dark clouds but nothing to worry about. Not that bad visibility..
~~~No Boats around - felt like April. Guess the small craft advisories and weather forecasts kept everyone in….this alone would make it a great day!!!!
Hit a few spots close until the fog lifted away...had the first bass on by 10:30, plus a fish nearly ever drift including a just over the 28” mark keeper by 11.. nice. Great start = I always feel more relaxed when I nail a keeper @ the beginning of the day..and this year has been Stellar – only one trip so far without a keeper sized fish.. really great..
And this day would get better.. nailed another one ½ hour later..28.75”
Fog and overwhelming mist lifted enough to get the FF on and move freely – saw some birds working..
Dropped in by them..Blue…shoot..had a feeling that some bass are mixed in..then Hit a Robin..what? even saw a few of them Blitzing as well –orange tails breaching.. 2 more blues, another robin , and finally a ZZZZZZZZZZZ bass. Another keeper. 28.5”
PLAYED Bass ? Blue? Or ROBIN? For about 2hours.. sort of Fun.. like a game show….
Each initial hit would be the same.. until the run..or lack of a run….as you could image the blues were easier to tell….bite off or crazy mini tarpon dance. But the robins where tricking me.. sometimes I would guess robin and it would be a smaller schoolie…. Picked up another ZZZzzz def. Bass..keeper 29.75”.. gave it a few more drifts but only produced Robins
Terns gave up on the game as did the bass n blues..
Moved to my final spot…only 3 boats around in any direction.. sweet.
Made a few runs…but nothing happening..kept @ it with thoughts of where to head next?.....just like that had a hit set the hook…and the fish turned on like a freight train…WHOA!~ nice one~~ More than half spooled my little shimano….got her under control – raced @ me—took a few more hefty runs.. really glad I added that larger fore grip to my custom rogue.. one more short run then got her in..Had grabbed a big bucket mouth 36.5” – boated , measured and quickly back to the water where we took our time eyeing each other until she was ready to go…. Big Broom tailed swipe and the fish shot off… Largest of the Season for me ( and a few seasons I think)
Fish turned on alittle better after that..had a few more mid-sized Bass and blues mixed in every other drift ..
Took a break Called the wife to make plans for a party we had to go to… stowed everything.. took one more drift..Bam.. nailed another keeper just over 28” … thanks!
Called it a day after that…home by 3:30pm..
