SB to PJ ~ Pre-Father's Day AM trip..~ 6-19-11

SB to PJ ~ Pre-Father's Day AM trip..~ 6-19-11

had to hit it early in order to get back to set up for Father's Day BBQ @ my house this yr.
wanted to get a few fillets as a surprise for my pop since we didn't keep anything the day before.

to the ramp @ 5:20
underway @ 5:40
-----------------------------------
Sunrise 5:19
WInd - zero ----SW @ 10 by 9am..
water 65
air 67-75
-----------------------------------

was a few hrs into the outgoing -- just enough to try a few spots before the tide gave out..

had fish there - Rollin.. but no takers...

FLAT CALM>>> moved from spot - nada > to spot - nada > to spot nada...a few hits here and there...but it took me 2 hrs to locate any fish..
only had 2 more hrs before I had to get in...

4 th location... finally hada bass on the 1st cast --- micro..... then some scup and robin... all small.

decided to ride over to PJ .... every boat on the sound was there....looked like a P-Lot. - if you like PB fishing now's the time as they were doing very very well..

saw a few Noreasters as well... the fish were there too... but I couldn't get anything to them..wrong gear..
did manage a Very nice 15" scup for pop and some short fluke and more robins..

headed back to SB --- 9am-- stopped on Spot 3 saw a few fish surface...west side..best action of the day and I only had a half to fish it..

mostly blues...but had a bass in the mix.... had one very nice 28-29" blue...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...then broke off.. thought it was a keeper bass until saw that devils fork tail...zip away and break the leader..

called it after that as I was pushing it on time..very low tide and leaving @ 10 am while everyone's coming in..is time consuming..

a nice early morning ride....with some fish mixed in caught a nice mixed bag..just mostly small.

Total:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1 big Blue...28-29" --got away..
6 Cocktail Blues ( 19-22") kept 1
8 Scup ( 11-15") kept the 15" ( Dad loved it)
2 Bass ( 16"-22")
2 Fluke ( 17-19")
too Many robins..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Truck just rolled 111,111
- Never found the bass Bite I was looking for...well I did find it ..just not were I could fish it..
SB CN FP ~ Brook 2 Brook ~ 1.5hr tour ~ 6-16-11
SB CN FP - Brook 2 Brook ~ 1.5hr tour ~ 6-16-11
watched the weather ALL day -- hoping the rain would stay west until later as predicted..
by the time I got off the train.. -- no rain.. sun peeking through the clouds.. it's a GO>
raced home hook the rig and off I went in 10min....consolidated the gear the night before for a 2 hand grab..6:44
zipped around the corner....and right behind... a S__L_O_W moving truck....with the license plate "POODLE" starring back @ me...settled in for an extra 5-10min of driving...and yeah --of course they went exactly the same way I was going..just about the whole way...well it's better than being behind..."GR8GMA"..ok I admit I was getting a little steamed..but as soon I was free from that.. all was gravy..
VERY low moon tide upon arrival.. 7:05 pm.
________________________________________
Low @ 6:45
wind SSW 10-15 , 15-20 swift enough..Choppy
air 75ish?
water 68 - 61
sunset 8:28..
________________________________________
under way by 7:15...really really low...
got outside and chop slop... very quiet..
had to pick my spots right --
only 1.5 hr of light to go>>>>>>
stopped on spot close that had fish before....gave 3 quick drifts,,,,nada...marked 2 fish ..
1.25 hrs to go>>>>>>>
hit the next spot...drift the longest here. marked fish - tried to get under the wind.. in the wind outta the wind .. in out.. nada-- not even a touch.. should have left sooner --but I felt there was a good shot @ nice fish...now with light fading.. Very overcast cut the light by more than half..
decided to make a big move east....
now only .75 hrs to Go>>>>>>>>
set up with another boat fluking .. hoping to pick up anything @ this point just to avoid a Skunk..
Fish ON .. SEA Robin = semi skunk. .. 2 more short drifts,,,guys picking up fluke n robins but nada a for me .. no bait..
now .5 hrs to Go>>>>>>>>>> 8:30 SUNSET> moved again to a spot I like....LAST shot...Payed off... saw a fish immediately....splash about 2 ft from shore?
then another and another and a whole school of bass rolling near shore... motored in quietly with 4 stroke.....had a hit...then 4-5 casted later.. fish on. nice schoolie..
did about 8 quick drifts in that last 1/2 -- had great great action..gotta love bass blitzes..managed one keeper...and snagged a 27" fish side ways which ran me around the boat in a circle 8 times.. thought it was a monster......
now light faded almost completely...wind picked up...couldn't see the clouds..knew that storm was coming.. last one on the sound..time to GO>>>>
left em rolling,,,but not as much --- done @ 9:06pm..
choppy slamming ride back..but still pretty fast with the new 90.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~total - released
1 Keeper Bass ( 29") - weird cleft pallet face.
4 Shorts ( 23, 23, 25 , 27")
1 Scup 12"
1 Robin
1 nice fish on and off..
4-5 missed hits..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Zero Blues again!!!!!!!!!!!
great quick trip after work...glad I went
SB CN WM ~ ALL BASS day + hook straight~ 6-12-11
SB CN WM ~ ALL BASS day + hook straight~ 6-12-11
With a nice a amount of rain the day before..+ a fairly windy morning @ the house - my calculation= NE wind down in the bushes = means a snotty rough day..9 out of 10
plus 40% chance of t-storm...fog in the Am... doesn't really sound all that promising.. but I was going no matter what.. got off to a late start..
left the house @ 10:30...on the water by 11.
___________________________________________
high @ 9am..
Wind NE 10-15
water cool @ the surface - 57 -56 ( really 64-65)
air - cool 66 building to 72ish..( much better than the 100 degrees on 3 days ago..)
____________________________________________
on the water by 11....
Very Overcast...Perfect.
Stopped on a spot which I haven't fished in awhile -- nada...made slight adjustment..bite.. ..redrift.. 11:15. Fish on ZZZZZZZZ just a keeper (28") . nice way to start
gave it another 30- 45 .. had a few more hits but no hook ups..
went to where I the hooked a hook fish on mem day....sea robin..blah..
the Bay was fairly Flat - the Wind NE -- blocked by land..made for a pleasant day.. I really thought it was going to bad..outgoing tide incoming wind..but it wasn't.
1pm moved to a spot I had a few bass in the past...calm...too calm...just very quiet not many boats out at all..saw some cormorans packed together moved in close with them.. but nada..
Floating around casting.. casting.. thinking about which was to go ? east? west?...was just about to leave , when I saw a Splash...and a tail...bass! ...moved into the spot..3rd cast .. Bam fish on ZZZZZZZZZZ...Keeper ( 30.5")
then they started showing up here - there....but not hitting .... a hit here and there... 15 min -- BAM ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ fish on...ZZZZZZZ........ZZZZZZZ...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.. this was a big fish...the drag just kept going...reel / line was plinking.......as the fish pulled and pulled..then POP>...off he went....reeled in to find the Hook was Straight..yikes...switched to bigger hooks...but the fish were finicky....
threw the bag @ them for 4 hours... with not as many fish as I would like ` when they are busting around you..if I had a good guess cast.. I had a fish..or a BIG hit.( it was driving me a little nuts)
@ one point I moved into busting fish... got up on the casting deck,,,and saw a Big bas roll ...slowly @ my feet .. wow what a sight - He moved so slow I thought he was dead @ 1st... I just changed back to what I had the keeps on .. even if I was losing shoots @ bigger fish --it was atleast a shot.. everthing else wasnt working..
picked up 10 Schoolies and a fluke ....even though they would hit as often as I would like --I was patient.. 4:15 pm... had a good pattern going .. had a bite even drift.. (which was alot).... hook one finally....BAM,,,,light bite....But when I set it...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ....ZZZZZZZZZZZZ very Nice Fish -- took me a few minutes to get em in .. Keeper ( 35") stocky...took my time releasing this one.. beautiful fish..Largest fish landed of 2011.
gave it a few more drifts ..but decided to leave on that good note...Called it 5pm --- Calm - FAST ride back...
saw a few birds on the way....took a detour - just to investigate...
nothing on top..not even a ripple..but marked a few fish in 30ft...so I quickly sent down an offering.. 2 bounces..BAM ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ FISH ON...another keeper Bass ( 31")
Redrifted and on 3 consecutive drifts
-ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ FISH ON...another keeper ( 32.25")'
-ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ FISH ON...another keeper ( 30.25")
-ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ FISH ON...another kee--- - ohh popped off half way...
stayed too long missed a few bites -- robin and a XL scup. but fish moved on after that 1st Hr .. what a great bite to find. A school of all keeper bass..
Ok really Done @ 7pm...semi doghouse...but when you hit something like that - you just got to fish it...the drift was dead...fishing straight up n down...and they still hit-those light bites are great....never know what it's going to be until that hook is set..
Total~~~~~~~~~all released.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6 Keeper Bass landed ( 28", 30.25",31", 31.375", 32.25", 35")
~~~ 4 Keepers lost 1/2 way.- one big Hook straightening fish..
10 Schoolie Bass ( 21-26")
1 Fluke ( 19")
1 Scup (15")
2 Robins
30? missed hits....too many.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ most important part was = ZERO Blues. not even one bite off..
~ awesome day. best Bass day of 2011 so far~
SB~ 1st Fly trip 2011 - Equip breakdown x2 ~ 6-6-11
SB~ 1st Fly trip 2011 - Equip breakdown x2 ~ 6-6-11
SB~ 1st Fly trip 2011 - Equip breakdown x2 ~ 6-6-11
to the water @ 645-- very good timing...that's 15 min early than expected / usual..
I made 3 quick flies the night before... because I had None? left in the fly box form last season...must be somewhere..
__________________________
air 73
water 66
wind - NW 0-5 Calm breeze -- became zero wind..good fly conditions - Bad bugs conditions..
high @ 4pm
__________________________
in the water by 650 perfect tide ..
Had great casts right out the box -- didn't last long 30 casts in I had a terrible Fly reel malfunction....3 seasons of abuse and my Pflueger Trion quit trion...and ground to a halt..
I knew I should switched it last year when it was giving me trouble @ the end of the season..ground the line back on it it...and had to get the spinner out -- should have had one my MANY back up reels on hand. .. but didn't.. Not even a bump on the Fly...
casted for about an hour....with nada.. no signs of life -- no bait either....as The clock rounded 8pm -- I was thinking maybe this is a lost cause...not even 2 seconds later -- bam -- fish on like be electrocuted to attention...landed a nice 24" schoolie...
now I have the stink on it.. repeated the same process in the same area...fish were out a little further than I guess my fly was reaching...2 casts more and I another fish on -- a Nice one to -- about keeper size but he got off 20 ft away..
had a nice bite going for an hour...managed 3 more fish and a few hits...when on the last Fish my new reel broke -- new for 2011 Shimano Sahara 3000fd-- 20-30 fish - on this thing since Spring and the gears broke inside..I felt it break as I was reeling a 20" fish in....after that it also ground to a halt.. still tried to fish it but it was just shot and made me miss 2 hits and hit hitched ..ad another one to the scrap heap - I had my doubts about it from the beginning...I knew I should have gotten rid of it - oh well...
enjoyed the beautiful sunset / sky as the bugs were relentlessly trying to find away through my bug spray shields...
done @ 9pm - still good light with No clouds -- extra time..is just the best. NO blues rocks too..a great 2hrs.
total~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4 Schoolies Bass ( 18-24")
1 Nice fish on half way in .. then off...
3-4 missed bites
SB CN FP ~ BLUE INVASION begins ~ 6-4-11
SB CN FP ~ BLUE INVASION begins ~ 6-4-11
Leisurely Sat morning getting all my gear together to go..walked around in circles alot --unfocused...
wanted to get out just before the High tide so I didn't care about the time....but I do like prepacking everything the night before better...just like getting up n going better..
nice day..nice morning
~ gassed up as well and spoke to a commercial guy ~ warning me about Zukes internal zincs....
---------------------------------
High @ 2pm
wind NW 5-10 .. then 10-15 by 2pm --never did switch to the South as predicted..
water 65- 63
Air - 70-75
---------------------------------
to the ramp @ and under way by Noon
not that may trailers as I expected being a beautiful day mid-day launch..
hit the same spot I had the 32.5" last week...not even a touch -- 4-5 drifts - I'll be back.....later..on the way out saw a group of 3 dead scup floating..investigated -- they were all keeper size 12+"...left em for the gulls....
moved to another spot where I had bass....6-7 drifts.....a few hits ..but still nada.. saw some seagulls in the distance -- then a splash..
high tailed it over there.. cast into a boil...Fish On BLUE... shoot..
blue after blue after blue after blue after blue....not one bass in the mix below or above..- the bite off, lure destroying, leader mangling, yellow eyed monsters have invaded..
picked up a scup in the mix a big one @ 15" --- released him and hoped he made it back to bottom 50/50 chance with all those choppers in the water...they were everywhere.
tried a few different spots moved around but they kept finding me....H@ 2pm...made a move -- finally found a bass...Micro..15"...and yep more blues...and few big head robins
3:30ish high tailed Back to 32.5" spot.....still Nothing - not even a touch..wind against tide didn't help...after 8 drifts? left to repeat the same tour as earlier ...same results...
nothing @ the next spot -- some hits but nothing boated.. back to the Blues area...picked a few more and another scup n Fluke....back to the Micro bass spot...just more blues n Robins..
wind picked made it a little choppy...
5:30ish ~ on the way back....decided to give the Blues spot one more shot @ bass.... 1st Cast...Bam get a nice hit as the lure came to rest...ZZZZZZZZ..and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ to big runs...big fish.. staying down.. after a nice fight...boated a nice bass.. biggest of the season for me @ 34.75" -- fat and very healthy...released quickly after a quick measure..
set up on another drift.....Bam --- Blue..24" ...shoot... 5 more drifts. and I had another bass.. and another Keeper size...looked like a football fat 29.5"-- also released...
stuck it out but the bite died .. managed another scup...on the 3rd "last Drift"
called it a day @ 6:20pm...( just @ the edge of late with the wife)
Glad I kept @ it...paid off this time. Many lures, much searching ..a little sad the spring blues have invaded avoiding them is impossible now...hide your bucktails.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~total released
2 Keeper Bass ( 34.75", 29.5")
1 Schoolie Bass ( 15")
20++ Blues ( 19-24") most 22"
3 Fluke ( 16-18")
4 Scup ( 12-15")
6 Robins
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-nice mixed bag day dominated by Blues..
-beautiful sky near the end of the day..
-went to use the fly rod -- but left the Flies in the truck.
SB - CN ~ Bassin ~ Mem Day Part 2 ~ 5-30-11
SB - CN ~ Bassin ~ Mem Day Part 2 ~ 5-30-11
watched the T-storms roll in and out in the am..watched the radar and snuck out of the house right behind them..well not right behind them but just enough..
to the water @ 11:15..
------------------------------
High @ 11am
wind - zero - NW @ 5..back to zero
water 65-62
air HHH 86
---------------------------------
after a so so Fluke day -- well maybe less than so so really
decided to hit the home waters in search of bass no matter what.
out on my way --found a promising spot I love --set up quick with another boat - nice guy - thanks for sharing the drift and pointing out fish..just he and I = I true gentleman - he was there 1st so I was just trying my best to stay clear enough but still wanted to get on the fish..breaking here ...then there..
took several drifts - but I finally hooked a nice shoolie ( 24").. man I love that feel of the bite -- subtle..but definitive. Fish.ON!
Speaking of FISH ON! - I made myself a pair of Fish oN! gloves just for this trip to try and shake of the So SO spring I have been having thus far..I just need to find a pattern..
took several more drift...had another hook up--- shoot BLUE...no-
released him and just kept @ it.... other guy split with no other fish in sight.... I just kept @ it...had that feeling..
subtle bite.. BAM ! SET it! FISH ON GLOVES ! yeah,. a nice fish took off....bzzzzzz....fought him to exhaustion..the line look weird in his mouth lure buried....was worried the leader would break from raking back n forth over his rough mouth...got em boat side and with one quick grab of the lip - measured a nice 32.5" fish..
went to un hook the fish and my lure was deep ---but I didn't actually hook the fish.. but I hooked another hook already in the fishes gut???@?@?#@?#? crazy- what are the odds,,the gut hook was hooking his stomach closed... fish was spent..Decided to keep em for the BBQ..( stomach was empty upon inspection)
gave in a few more drifts than I should of after that-- had a follow..but bite died..
1pm? had a 2nd location in mind ...moved towards it but on the way I found some birds crashing...so set up in on em.. 1st cast --Fish on Bass,, nice.. found another pattern and stuck with it...( gloves really workin)
had a good bite going Bass, Blues, fluke, porgy - not all out bonanza but very good...more missed hits and on / offs ..even ONE HUGE FISH on -- my reel was SCREAMING fish just kept running ...I thought I would run out of line.. but he stopped .. turned and the like broke?..ouch.. I think on a rock or structure..weird break.
stayed on them until 3:45pm? when the bite slowed even though I could see fish up n down right next to me.. just wouldn't hit..
was going to head in early...when on the way in saw birds again .. and yup ..found a 3rd pattern...wasn't going to pass it up..All alone as well...Bass , Blues top & middle with Fluke below..a short drift in 22-14..but it was even more consistent..stayed 2 hrs extra and had a great time..left em biting too...
done by 6:00pm
total:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1 Keeper Bass (32.5" @ 10.1 lbs) Kept
12 short Bass ( 21-27") most 24-25" ~ Kept 1 @19"
8 Blues (19-26")
4 Fluke (17-20")
1 Scup (12.5") Kept DOA
many follows right to the boat,,mostly when I was just retrieving to cast @ breakin fish,..
many missed bites --too many but I'd rather have many bites.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- many WWII planes around B-29, T-6 trainer, Dauntless? ..very best part of the day was when a P-51 came screaming banking around the bend chased / followed by an F-16 --- so excited / surprised / startled @ the sight -- I yelled out P-51 Cadillac of the sky! YEAH!!! what a sight and sound..

Definitely one of my Favorite days of 2011 so far..
