Noelle's 1st Fish Trip 6-28-09

Noelle's 1st Fish Trip 6-28-09
Sun 6-28-09
I took my niece NoelIe on her 1st fishing trip yesterday..She is 7 now..I waited for the day she would ready to fish and to pass on what was passed to me from many generations before. and today was it!
I bought her her 1st rod - awesome -- many firsts for her today.
--------------------------------------------------
Low @ 10am
Temp - 65 am / 80 pm
water 65-67
wind ENE @ 10-15 - Choppy - but mostly form much boat traffic by 2pm
-------------------------------------------------
8:30 am...Fog rolled in early as I met her and my parents @ the PJ ramp ...a nice protected harbour..just incase..
I had everything ready to go.. "the 1st first rule is........" ...she answered "Always obey captains orders"
"the 2nd rule is..."......."go Slow - take your time around the dock" ....perfect. we boarded and I went through some operations with her as to dock/ nautical etiquette/rules...just as we near the end of the lesson and ...the dock master comes over and says we need to move soon..I look around the ramp..a mad rush of 1 other boat @ the ramp and 5 trailers in the lot.... -- "Right" - "I was just explaining the importance of patience around the dock to my niece...it's here 1st time on a boat..thanks for helping in the lesson.".... Now if had been any other time of day and nice I would have saved the lessons...so we slowly shove off as planned..

drove up by Pirates to do some aided driving lessons and more boat operations..as well as Practice casting..(a dehooked popper works wonders for this).. 1/2 hr she was having fun and really wanted a hook on that thing.. ok she was in a good amount of control the rod -- so off we went.. Calm as Glass inside.. wind ENE @10-15..
Decided to take her outside and see how the waves were...pretty flat...she Loved it.. got behind another vessel to soften the ride ...and it stops.. motor trouble..Merc. again.. move past and picking up speed.. she was so excited.. 1st in the seat then moved to the bow..it was her favorite part and mine as well..make you remember my 1st boat ride on a small boat,,,awesome.

headed to OFP and drifted for porgies -- pretty rocky --we'll just see how she does,,she loved it as well..( my Dad wouldn't fish this..) we rocked and fished -- her 1st Fish EVER... - SEA ROBIN! Common Sea robin. "What a beautiful fish" ,, yes it is. (Now she fished for Large mouth with my dad in FL in Jan ..and had NADA) So Catching any fish was priority,,,the plan was to anchor and chum for no stop action.. but she liked drifting ,, next drift --her 1st porgy..nice size 13" specimen,

Spotted some birds --explained their importance,,and we headed to find a small blue blitz.. she grabbed her spinning rod.. -- um no hooks..I looked for the hooks I had snap swivels for just this moment..could not find em.. so I Just quickly cast one of my own and hooked a nice 29" fish,,, that we both fought together. and quickly released him after a good fight.. a few more porgy drifts and casting yielded a few more Robins ( her 1st Striped Robin )and more porgies..but the bite cold.

took a Ride east.. "look birds"..... very good. drifted and casted .. she did so well. She like to measure each one..
~~fish on ... robin, 15"
~~Fish on ...Robin again with 5 following
~~fish on 1st FLUKE - 16"
~~Fish on...Porgy on plastics 12"
~~Fish on 1st BLUEfish..21"
~~Fish on more Robins and porgies..( most porgies were 12")
~~ and her last fish was a sundial 10" - which she loved... all released

now I guess counting runs in the family.. she had a tally going..
-------------------------------------------------------
Tally:
Noelle: 19 Fish
Uncle P: 12 fish
-------------------------------------------------------

3:30pm and she didn't want to go.. we got a call that we where going to be late for the postponed Fathers day party..@ 4pm...
well -- nothing new there as I am always in hot water for fishing to long..getting back late..

back to a VERY - VERY busy dock -- that time in the morning was well worth it, as she did everything perfectly..and we were on the trailer and gone in no time.

a perfect 1st Trip.... so proud.

1st Home Town Striper on the FLY 6-4-09

This a banner day for me - one I will not soon forget,. still smiling ear to ear,

Off the train @ 6:20...skys look to clearing.. I am going..I've chomping at the bit to try my NY spots with the Fly rod after the Orivis school this past weekend..Plus the wind dropped off completly and just casting with no wind will be nice and help me get the feel for shooting line..any line..I had my back up rod already in the truck ...never ever casted it so that will be nice to try as well.
------------------------------
On the water @ 7pm
high @ 9:30ish - sunset 8:20pm
air 60s
wind zero.
water 61?
------------------------------
Grey grey skys with the sun just peaking through..
put on a yellow deciever on that Cast a fly gave me..
water pretty high and moving in fast..
after a great 1st cast..I thought this will be great..3 casts later and a tree and a the grass snagged and then line tangled in basket in a ball..then around basket 4x ..yeah not so great ..but I do like the back up rod..maybe better than my St croix..we'll see. The reel is definetly not as good..been sitting for 3 yrs? not in 100% shape..but workable for a back up.

finally got a few good casts..and then a HIT! saw it too as the yellow disappeared..cool. missed it though..small fish..

then 4 more cast and big swirl behind the fly..turned away..Very cool..

Deciever just not getter down enough...decided to clouser it..picked out one I made...plunk..shoot drooped in 4' of water..could see it..tied on a store bought grey/white yellow eyed clouser..and used it for the next 5 min.. to get the one I made back..10 min. later --determined.. I used the rod tip to hook it..worked -- good thing the water is crystal clear..
now around 7:50...back to fishig..but just used the Ebay special..about 20 more casts...Fish ON! mirco 10"..hit @ the rod tip..still a Fish! my first NY - hometown fish on the fly--sweet..

8pm back to bad casting and BUGS BUGS BUGS..in my mouth , ears , nose , eyes..running along my glasses..geez..in all my excitment..forgot the spray.....weeds. coming in on every other cast.. was determined to get some good casts off.. Just kept thinking I just need a few..just need to get this little looking right...bam! another hit..missed ..then AnotherBam..missed it --tiny fish as I saw him turn away,,..

8:15--got into a good groove now..then BAM! A nice big bite that I could fell and instinct set that hook well..he just sat in the tide...flopped once or twice tugging...then finnally ran and I was ready..slipping the light smoothly until I got it too the reel..I was nt losing this one My 1st nice fish..ZZZZZZ drag! good thing I remembered to set it..Thanks again Orvis school.. after a great fight...gently landed a 26" fish..this was what I waiting to feel for the 1st time..and it was AWESOME.
8:20pm...got what I needed packed it right after the release..

Just kept saying AWESOME..AWESOME...just AWESOME..on a very sweaty bug bitten walk back..
----------------------------------
total
2 Fly Schoolie bass. (10", 26")
3 missed bites.
1 cool swirl.
---------------------------------
-nice sunset as well..RED RED sky as the sun just got out from under the thick grey blanket of a sky..

I one happy and Blessed angler.

now camera..but crappy cell picts are better than nothing..
