SB~ Bass in the Rain~ 5-19-13

SB~ Bass in the Rain~ 5-19-13

All geared up for the rain – Wrapped the DF in a plastic bag and bungee It down . worked great. Dry.

To the ramp @ 7 – I love overcast days & Light rain is no problem ~
Water just beginning to slowly move…..good timing.

---------------------------------------------------------
Wind S SE @ 5-10 grey overcast n light rain – wind picking up by 11
Air 59
Water 56-57
High 646
--------------------------------------------------

There’s an early morning spot I find irresistible. Haven’t had fish here in a year ++ gotta stop even though it’s a very slow tide..
2nd cast ... light ,light almost nonexistent pick up --- felt like a small schoolie didn’t turn on until he passed near the boat –ZZZzZZZzzzzZZ - turned out to be a Keeper bass 31".. that’s 2 days in a row – that my first fish of the day is a keeper ~ always a great way to start

Dropped to other fish – one about keeper size judging by the 1st run..but popped off.. … a few more drifts picked up another schoolie 23” as the light wind began followed by light rain.. time to GO>

2nd Drop---- fish on 1st cast – schoolie and 4 more bass to in 7 casts..including a Keeper Around 33” which I dropped boat side trying to hand grab his mouth for 15 seconds attempting to not Have a Hook imbedded in my hand…no big deal as he was heading back anyway.. nice fish.

Got slow after the big guy…and blues mixed in big time. Still had a consistent enough bite to stay put though the tide..
moved around a little to change the drift and it worked – Nailed another nice 32” fish ~ one of those casts that just look right..and the retrieve felt right..1 out of 100 times this works..

Yak follower – mugger. as I caught the 32:
“ is that a Keeper?”
Yep.
“can I have it?”
No. I am releasing it….
“oh ..ok.”
Really guy? Really.. the fish market is on land..geez.
It’s bad enough he was mugging up on me crossing the bow within feet as I casted several times.. but asking to keep some else’s fish 2 seconds after they caught it is just terrible etiquette - terrible.
He was actually a nice guy – just no understanding of personal space. Novice.

Really pretty much Ended the day with that keeper 32"
– just blues left and the Last fish = blue .. which means >>>>> Time to go
Done @ 11 as the wind and rain picked up and tide dropping fast..

-----------------------------------------------
Total: all released.
3 keeper bass ( 31",32",33")
10 short bass (18-26")
10+ blues
No robins? - odd
------------------------------------------------
- yak guy .. Is that a keeper .. Yes....Can I have it? No..clueless
that he was invading my space..he'd troll right in front of me several times.mug mug..
Not really happy to see the blue around early – oh well. At least they can add some excitement –but I prefer to see them more towards July…
- rain ,rain ,rain and more rain all day ++++

4 hrs felt like it went fast!
Great morning in the rain ~ really loved this morning.

SB-PJ-MS ~ 1st keeper Fluke 2013 ~ 5-18-13

SB-PJ-MS ~ 1st keeper Fluke 2013 ~ 5-18-13

to the water @ 5 - under way Dave right on time 5:15 @ 5:16..
Beautiful morning ahead..

---------------- ---------------------------------
Wind: Calm all day until 2pm when the west wind came kicking in @ 10-15+ with rain behind it.
Air: 56-67
water 55-58
High 546am
------------------ ---------------------------------

hit a few spots on the way out - nada. Tide not really ready yet..
not much in the way of bait showing or birds yet..( took all day for the birds to show)
this is the1st day I saw them Dive on fish -- always a favorite spring sight.

1st fish in - sea robin..then Blues....Both Dave
nada for me....not a touch..started to wonder if things are not really moving ..
cast after cast - quiet–
40 min after high..just about to leave:
I said “Give me a sign there's fish here – any fish”...2 seconds later BAM ! ..Fish On.. Nice Nice Keeper - 1st fish of the day for me..Nice. 30.25”

plucked a few more shorts and too many blues..made a move...

Next spot same thing....40 min – NADA..
The words barely left my lips “ There's no Fish here.....” BAM -~ Fish ON – A really really nice fat 33.5” football shaped Keeper.. drag ripping fight – Hand grabbed him 1st shot..quick pict n release...

Bounced to another spot – just Robins..

Yet another place– one hit wonder...

fished a Drop I love – and found BIG scup near MS as soon as it hit the bottom along with Fluke & Blues,...Could have stayed here All day – great bite.consistent..but no Bass..
Wind started to Kick up a little Outta the S. Raced back to the first spot before the tide gave out.

Stopped on the Fleet – nada

Finally back to A from Z ….Hit a nice bite of Schoolies n Blues...double hook ups ..but no bigger fish.. Tide really @ an end..bite died

Went exploring since we had a few Hrs before we could get in due to the inlet...
Calm as glass...We stopped to shoot the breeze /Eat ..mid conversation...”Shh..hear that?”...Found a huge bunker pod . Like standing over a 15ft filled Fish pond...
Snagged one and it got destroyed – sliced in 2--before I could get it back by a heard of big chompers..sick to watch –like jaws.

Stuck with the pod – great find during low. Picked up Fluke , Bigger Blues and on 27” Bass..
Wind picked up Hard outta the West == bite died..Clouds moved in..rain coming.

Not much after that – hide outta the wind but nothing doing.. Just One Crazy Bright Bright Nuke Robin before calling it @ 211

1.5ft of water..made it back @ the right time as wind really began to kick in..and just before the Rain caught us...

Total:--------------------------
2 Keeper Bass ( 30.25", 33.5")
1 Just Shy Bass ( 27.937") Daves -- tried to stretch it.
16 Short bass ( 18-27") most 21" 10+ Blues - most 22-23" some larger biting off near 27" 1 Keeper Fluke (20.5") 1st of 2013.
6 Short Fluke ( 16"- 18")
5 Scup (12-14")
4-5 Robins - Bright orange.
-----------------------------
- tin boat following jerky fishing mugger. Casted in circles to keep him from getting too close @ times – just CLUELESS> got under us – ran over the fish.. cut us off a few time.. awful etiquette – left him and he follows us – come on guy.. took 3-4 moves to shake him..

Today had it all..a little bite of everything

GSB ~ Day off search for gold~ 5-16-13

With all the reports of Gold from all corners of the island again this year.
Took the day in search of….

To the ramp with Dave @ 5:22..only trailer out there …… under way by 5:36..
beautiful Sunrise.

Met the big dredge operation on the way out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wind – am: west @ 5 or less
- pm: west @ 10 switched to strong SW @ 10-15+
Air - am 57 – Calm , Rain , light fog
- pm 73 – Breezy , Sunny
Low @ 10am
Water 52-56
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long long day...530am - 330pm

had the range of weather;
Started with nice sunrise into cloudy overcast sky, light fog and rain…..breaking by the flood to a bright sunny day.

Once we passed the caution area…fish breaking on top… Bluefish – 1st one of the season..
Moved to some of my weak spots I like…
Dropped in with great anticipation....fish on…crap, more blues..and more blues and more blues..
Everywhere we set up..blues.. just kept moving hoping to get away from the lure chopping leading fraying yellow eyed devils.
Was actually happy when I picked the 1st Robin of the year and not too soon after 1st Fluke of the year.. but the blues soon invaded there as well.

1 other boat on scene upon arrival – one hour later 10X that ..2 hrs double that..guess blues are the best bet in town..
Just didn’t want to be in the fleet..
so we went on an exploration of new areas and old areas not fished in a while..

All nada.. not a touch from anything. Then the rain started… cool morning already… rain made it very cool..took a look @ the very helpful MYRadar app..
A lot a rain moving..yellow n red mixed in –looks like it might slide below us..moved North just above it for about an hour.

We were almost about to head in when it let up and I convinced Dave to try by the inlet.

All the PB were there.. watched em pick away @ short fluke…all in line @ 1st – then spread wide.
We bumped around a bit until We finally found a fish.. a Nice sized 25”Blue..
Marked it and made a dozen or so passes
until I had a light pick up – which felt like a log in the tide and took off on Several runs..weakfish drag setting wasn’t going to help.. so I had to adjust on the run – never a good thing.. but I landed a Sweet 33” Bass with a half bit off tale – looked to be an injury from youth that scared over. A survivor. Had to send him back.
Good strong release.
Very Next drift – hooking into a similar size fish…ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ – drag still not perfect – so I tested my luck again with adjusting during a fight..but I lost this one in 2 runs.. ------not adjusting after the fight was just Dumb, testing my luck twice really dumb. I really hope that wasn’t the Big weak we were looking for……….
Adjusted correctly – hooked up with a 3rd bass. Another nice keeper 29.5” – Bullnose. Another Survivor . Had to go back as well.. strong release as well.
Just blues after that but still larger than earlier.. bite slowed around 2-230pm

Headed back in…but made a fun stop playing around the bridge ..picking up a short bass , a med size Blue and a skate..
Really heading in now..3:30pm.

Nice day on the water. Relatively very calm all day.
Making that extra effort @ the end was worth it – saved the day and made not finding even one weak not so bad.

_________________________________________________________________________
Total:
2 keeper bass (29",33")
1 short bass ( 21")
1 lost keeper bass??? – if this was a BIG weak…I’ll be looking for you..
1 short fluke (17")
17+ blues (18-26") most
2 robin
1 skate
__________________________________________________________________________
- 1st Blue , Robin and Fluke of the season.
- Many more boat out than expected...I can’t imagine what this weekend will look like…...LIE of fishing.
- Some wacky boaters as well – but that’s the south shore.
- 5 -6 trailers upon return..

1st Yak Bass & 1st Yak Keeper 2013 ~ 5-11-13

1st Yak Bass & 1st Yak Keeper 2013 ~ 5-11-13
Had Some early errands to get a truck battery & antifreeze ,plus
With all the rain ,wind & possible t storms predicted
Yak was the way to go today ..

Probably could of taken the boat but I like THe immediate gratification of a quick entry n exit - especially with possible threatening storm conditions.

Looks like a window between storms too...

Tried a new way to secure to truck --- no good because on he way there a wind gust of near 25 -- blew the yak half way off the roof while in traffic-- I heard it slowly slide over the side and I could see it now hanging next to the truck...Great pull straps ..gently pulled onto the sidewalk and strapped her back down the old way...nearly a disaster

on the water by 1225
----------------
Windy 15-20 gust to 24
Air 63 - over cast - peeks of sun -
Water 57
High @1pm
-----------------
Getting the yak ready was quick . Didn't take much gear this time out. Bare min. All geared up to get drenched before I left the house.

Driving wind in the face as I paddled out. Two strokes up pushed one Stroke back..

Casting in the wind is tough enough...but from the yak it's a little more challenging ..was have a tough time keeping the boat where I wanted to fish..spinning top as was bounced from gust to gust.

1st stop..2nd cast - Fish on! ...nice fish dragged me to him..delayed that 1st run and rolled -- always a good sign of a larger fish..
took 1 nice drag peel and came in..fotgot my measuring stick..so i just used the boats hardware as a Judge..I thought the fish was close but wouldnt find out til later..

also thouht i was in for a great day.. but the bite never devolped..just a lot of small bite misses..and a lot of searching..
Birds were going crazy of some bait but couldnt get close to keep up.

had a solo tern dive on my lure several times ....

took awhile - but found some fish -- too bad they were all micro..it was a micro blitz.. machine gun hits.. could get away from them..

called it quits by 3:20pm

checked the radar once on land..just made it home before the next wave of Heavy rain..

measured the yak hardware...Yep - 1st Yak Keeper of 2013! Nice.
put a permanent mark on. Should of doen this years ago
-----------------------------------
Total: released:
1 Keeper/Yak Bass of 2013 (29"-30")
10 micro school bass (14-16")
20-30+ missed small bites, bumps, hits
-------------------------------------------
-Bunker spotted
-Osprey flying low over the bunker..never dove..
-Fast drift
-Left the DR/GPS @ home -worried about getting it drenched in the rain even though it never really rained on me..

even when it's slow ...it's never dull..

Cinco de Basso 2013 ~~~s~ 5-5-13

HoH

Cinco de Basso 2013 ~~~s~ 5-5-13

Attempted a repeat of the day before.
Just minus Dave…couldn’t make it ..

Cold, cold morning again …..41 and windy
East Winds all week ++..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wind- the bad east - ENE 10-15 switched to NE 15-20 @ 10am
Air 41-61
Water 48-55
High 846Am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seemed like it might be a tough go today with the Wind against tide..

Guess not..

2nd cast fish on...but the line broke easy..??? ..Same rod with the Wind knot mess form the day before..
Put It aside an grabbed another rod
Very next cast- fish on ..school fish 17" - always like getting the 1st one quickly no matter the size.

Got blown off the spot ..so I Moved off in search of larger bass...

Hit a few spots we had success yesterday but it was quiet !?!
Moved again to where we saw some the larger fish following yesterday...

2-3 casts in….
bite =miss….
bite =miss....
Bite = Fish ON! - a Nice keeper size !!! Made a Delayed 1st run as it tricked me into thinking it was just a small fish...ZZZZZ….
Got him next to the boat but he popped off – in the 30” ++ range..
Quickly blasted another cast in the same area..and I was quick reeling it back in because I thought I had weeds built up on the lure..and BAMM – right near the Bot a 33•5" Bass NAILS it..!!!! – Made a few really nice runs..Chunky Fish..

I knew I found the school of bigger fish..Just stayed in the one spot pretty much all day for a mix of many very small fish mixed in with 2 more keepers in the 30” range. Had many big fish Followers – some on return reel in to the boat some getting up behind a 17” bass tail as it were hooked..crazy. these fish are aggressive.

Pretty much Nonstop action all morning+

Done @ 12:46
__________________________
Total
3 keeper bass ( 33•5", 32•75", 31.5")
24" short bass (14"-25") most 17"
1 lost keeper size
10++ missed bites
___________________________

- not many boats going out today.....1 other trailer
- jellyfish invasion continues
- 3 jacket day ...brrrrr..wind, wind wind
- water not warming much..
- cormorant brigade chasing bait

Just A great Solo trip.

1st keeper bass 2013 ~ 5-4-13

1st keeper bass 2013 ~ 5-4-13

Back @ it with Dave on Sat. ( it is his B-day_ but he didn't tell me..til after the trip.)

Cold morning 45..Wind made it colder..
Met @ ramp @630
Underway @ 645

Saw my friend Tom heading out to Fluke - he ended up with 4 short fish & 1 keeper with 3 Fisherman…Slow.

--------------------------------------
Air 45-65
Wind ene 10-15 gust 18+ bad wind again..
Switched s for 5 min- but east all day not great
Water 49-56
H 746am
-----------------------------------------
Didn’t mess around this Am searching too much .. went to a spot we both agreed on 1st.
Good choice as we Both had 1st cast hits -a good sign.

But still took a while to boat a fish…and Dave did 1st with a small 17”.

we actually had a pretty good drift with the wind speed just in the wrong direction…Casting with the wind was the way to go today.

about 6 schoolies in…I Had a great fish on ...rolled and rolled -- drag was too tight -- popped off...man ..I couldn't believe it.. I checked them all the night before too..but I must have missed something???? Brand new reel too.. shoot..Kick in myself ...

It happened early enough that I knew I'd get a shot at a redemption fish
but it was 2 hours later:

Just a keeper @ 28.25"--- 1st of 2013
Always nice to get that 1st one-
While the fish was hooked I look down into the water column and see one.. .. then 2, then a whole school ! following the hooked fish trying to take what the hooked fish had.....crazy Sight – looking down @ all those keeper sized fish+ swarming the hooked fish was nuts....So cool, that I completely stopped focusing on the fact that I had a keeper on…and really tried to get Dave a Hook up – but no takers..
landed and released…

Just shorts the rest on the day – and it slowed to a halt 2hrs past High….only one fish in that time .. but in a new area.

Dave was having a hard time today..only 3 fish and some very uncharacteristic tackle troubles...the mother of all wind knots.

Called @ Noon.

Total----------------------------------------
1 keeper bass 28.25"

16 shorts ( 15"-27")
5-6 follows
1 lost 33-34"
--------------------------------------------------
- Aquarium follows were an awesome sight.
- tons of man-o-war style jelly fish in the water - some very large
- Bone head move of the day : I was watching with great concentration on a boat navigating a shallow area while powering down an outgoing tide …not paying attention and side swipe the red channel marker buoy_ ouch - paint swap - 1st time in my boating history I bumped a buoy.. geez..no damage to the boat but the pride is bumped..
- had an old timer approach like an old friend while we spoke about the day and we did a story swap. He was hilarious @ 85yrs young
- New sheath - Off shore Angler By Bass Pro - well worth the bargain amount $$ - a perfect fit to the P-line 7.5" pliers.
- Everything returning to very green this week but still very cold in the Am..

Things are looking better each Weak.. weakfish reports coming in from all over already it is a GREAT sign. - South -South west - North east , North west ,east.. now we just need a few North..( I spoke too soon just saw a report of a 21” on 5-5-13 in PJ harbor by Craftis)

Lawn mower maint~ 5-3/4-13

No yak due to train mess up

So I did a quick running mow with no gas left -- finished with smoke rising from the near empty tank

56 degrees

Got the oil done
The blade nut was tough to remove-
After closer inspection the bolt is stripping a little
And the adapter key ground off..and the spindle is ground down to round instead of square...not good the blade is slipping on th shaft

Another.. $28 shipped- blade adapter/pully = part# 195963

Air filter $7
Spark plug $3
HF wire brush Set $2

Found e.10 first start used spark plug match on a shelf @ the store..
