MS ~ Flukin ~ Mem Day Wknd 2011~ Part 1 ~ 5-28-11

MS ~ Flukin ~ Mem Day Wknd 2011~ Part 1 ~ 5-28-11

Fluked MS
845 - 5pm
Since I have been having an off year - decided to fluke today rather than chase birds / bass / blues /bait..
1st time really flukin 2011..
1st time using bait this year

long long day - sort of a better bite --
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
high @ 9am
wind - zero & 5-10 Nw-- @ about 2pm? came like a FAN out of the S 15-20..
air warm 82?
water 63 -57
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ON THE water @ 8:45
fog as I left the harbour but just beginning to lift -- 2011 has been the foggiest season I can remember on the Nshore.

stopped @ a few spots but nada.. moved east as planned -- dead drift...and invaded by Blues...picked up 6 and one speedy drag zipping break off..
no fluke...but a Snail.

moved around....finally found a small pile of fluke and just drifted over it for most of the day...bite was sort of slow but it was a bite..even napped and fished @ the same time @ one point.. definelty in no danger of running out of bait today...managed a few fluke and the 1st robins of 2011( nO!) both kinds.. plus a Sundial -- time flys on the water..

200pm already? -- wind switched to south like a FAN turned on --- decided to move back towards port..
made a stop on one the spots I hit earlier...and it WAS PACKED 30' deep with fish..this the 1st really good sounding I have had yet this spring..finally.
drifted though the pile.. but no hook up..wind kicking and drifting very swiftly... changed rigs and started to P/U some fluke and a scup..but still not the bite I was hoping for ..

Pile of Fish + Spring + Bait = Hook up......not today..or this year so far.

had enough of the wind -- very low tide now .. just starting to rise.. called it a day..S wind made it tough to dock @ the ramp..

nice place to be on a warm day..

total------------------------------------------ all released
12 fluke ( 15" -19")
6 Blues ( 19-24")
6 Striped Sea robins ( 1st of the season)
1 Common Sea Robin
1 Sundial ( 11")
1 Scup ( 12")
1 Snail
------------------------------------------
- B-29 right on schedule --- in fact it flew over me about 7 times.awesome every time.

only had an hour to fish so I had to make a choice where and stick to it...
well the new DF/GPS unit is awesome - glad I got to test for the 1st time..nice bright paper like screen. very small but very legible. now I just need to get the settings in order.

15 min in ~ 3-4 th drift --had a bite -- that I just completely missed -- non reaction on my part.. and that was it ..
not another bite bump or follow...

I did spook a fish that I paddled up behind....big fish just sitting on the surface...made a big slow wake as he sounded..

1st Rod Wrap Ever ~ 5-17-2011

-finnaly fixed some of my favorite rods.. just needed some eyes replace...have had the Mudhole wrap kit( $60) sitting around for more than a season now..

haven't used my No 1 St Croix in 2 seasons..

Epoxy didn't come out great..and the wrapping wasn't text book either - but they should hold up just fine

SB ~1st YAK Bass 2011 ` big one lost ~ 5-14-11

SB ~1st YAK Bass 2011 ` big one lost ~ 5-14-11

Saturday: Since I had to take the boat back in for it's 2ohr check... decided to take the Yak out for little while before dragging the skiff to the marina..

checked the weather... all good nice OVERcast skies..no rain..yet--Had everything to ready and hit the water @ 9am.

---------------------------------------------
H @ 9am
water 56-8?
wind SSW - 10-15..switched a few times..SE..turned off too @ one point..
Air - 63?
--------------------------------------------

I really love overcast day.. especially on the yak..
paddled in and hope for the best -- my 1st trip 2 weeks Ago?got blanked on the yak..so any fish will do today..

started casting around some spots I like...nada..then..bam..fish?...feels weird...but moving..crab?...nope . turtle..he was pretty calm about it..looking up @ me ..with the "can I go yet?" look.
no sleigh ride -- yet.

went back to searching...casted and casted some more..1/2 hr in....was not to worried as I had about 3hrs to go...stayed on this one spot--I just knew I'd get something eventually..pretty breezy kept pushin me away..paddled back...push away paddle back.. made 10+ drifts...still nada...weeds...
made few casts in a spot I had a keeper before...about 3 casts in...just as I was working the lure back to the boat..almost all the way back ..let it drop dead stop.. then went to pick it up to recast and BAM! set the hook immediately and A BIG BIG BASS...Surfaced and rolled 4ft in front me....what a sight...the rod bent in more than half and he took off running... zing.. but not that far...took a right turn and spun me in a circled ...then another right and went under me.. spun me again and again.....really workin @ trying to flip me....made one more short run...and then the fish just stayed under me...I could see this him but couldn't move him...just sat there as he took me where ever he wanted to go...easily a 36,38"-40" fish...maybe bigger -- I just rode around for about 7min...which is an eternity...Laughing all the way..this was the largest fish I have ever hooked on a YAK...and he was letting me know it...just lazily swam me around..I kept steady pressure...and decided I would wait to....then he did a sudden ` single head jerk and popped the lure out so abruptly that it shot straight out of his mouth, past the bow of the yak and feet into the air...-- I let out a Big --"Oh NO!!!!!!!!........no"

after the initial disappointment...... I was glad that he swam away...I was planning on a release.....just really would have loved to get a pict and a measurement...But being that it was a monster fish for me on Yak..I was happy with that..this was one of those moments that keep you coming back..again and Again..I wont forget a second of it..I keep playing it over and over and over in my head...awesome..It was my 1st YAK fish of the season -- what a fish to hook up with...

took me a minute...but I got back on track ....5 min later I hooked a 15" schoolie and asked him to to send his Big Brother back my way...

I actually end up having a pretty good day...more consistent than Friday...I 'd find one fish one --- and then 2-3 more form the same spot...almost back to back...
saw some fish waking and chasing bait,..a decent keeper sized Tail breach and slap....but only hooked a shrimp from the same spot..
did managed a few mid sized schoolies..
but the whole time I kept think of that Big bass..
done @ 1pm
~~~~~~~~~~~~
total -
1 Big Bass ( 36"-42...44...46...47..") just keeps getting bigger in my mind..
9 Schoolie Bass ( most 15-18") a decent 23", 24"
4-5 missed hits..
~~~~~~~~~~~~
- went home and got to hook up the DF/GPS for the yak...

...ready for a rematch..

MS PJ ~ LONG, Slow, Pick + CraZy TeRn ~ 5-6-11

LATE report Sat 5-6-11

858am - 654pm - Long day...

Had Tom B-fish on board today for some exploration - Bass / fluke on the North shore. 1st real trip into the sound this year.

Nice Calm morning - I was expecting to be rained on all morning too.. -- not a drop hit us all day.

---------------------------------

Low @ 9am

high @ 3pm

Wind S-SW @ 5-10 -- switched on @ 2pm WnW 15-10 -- then 5mph by 6:30ish..Mostly flat all day.

water 50- 51 - still cool..

air 55-67 - comfortable all day

--------------------------------

As we left the Harbour -- there were rescue boats everywhere-- maybe 10+ they were doing a Practice rescue with a dummy they put in the jetty..

Marked fish n bait right away..fished right outside the rescue.. but nada... no birds above..

move east -- still nada -- went west.. Tom had a fluke bite...but that was it .. moved to 2-3-4 -5 locations -- still nothing,..

1.5 hours in the birds started working...but still nothing hitting.. not really picking up much on the Finder either...stuck around them...finally a bite. Tom picks up a small Fluke..15"

another 1/2 late I get a bite and..a nice 25" schoolie. had 2 More bass on 5-6 drifts... one was just , just , just shy of a Keeper ....also picked a few Fluke...thought we found the bite...but it just never happened..

lots of Drifting --but not much action..Just waiting for it to Bust open..moved n moved --

around 2pm when the wind picked up - this single Crazy Tern...came out of no where...and just began to hover - float about my head--- not moving.. just @ the top of the rod tips...no noise just hovering...I would turn away to fish and would hover closer as I could see his shadow closing in on the top of my head...he showed up and the bite picked up a little - Tom finally had his 1st Bass of the season ... and I picked a 19" Fluke..

we redrifted and the tern came back... I didn't even have bait--- He just watched and floated above.....I have never seen anything like..no other terns or other birds were around either.. he followed us around for about an hour...we moved ... he moved..Crazy.WIND picked up and the bite was Zero ---.I thought he going to follow us home when we left ...he followed us to just about the harbour entrance... @ 4:30 ish..

Decided to try inside..moved all over,,warmer @ 58 in some spots..saw a fish surface.. casted to in .. BAM! ..Bluefish? - NO! not yet --- had 2 more bite offs.. and one chase to the boat...on a slow day - I'll take it...but I am not ready for the chompers..I need a spring bass fix first.

done @ 7pm.. Nice sky as we left

4 Bass ( 25", 25" ,26", 27 15/16")

5 Fluke ( 15-19")

1 Bluefish ( 19")

1 Fat Sundial ( 14.5") -- definelty the largest I have caught..stomach was full and he like a dinner plate

Re-plug the XJ - Torque it..5-7-11

The Jeep has been running badly lately --110k -- heat sinking -- rough runnning engine --light ++++

haven changed the plugs in 70?K....so got out the manual..+ the torque wrench I bought 2 yrs ago -- figured it out-- thought it was the wrong wrench...but it was in IN/ft lbs ..but coverted it easy..

Now I will torque everything..

took an hr + but I got the old plugs out and they were worn out - gap was double what it should be..same Champions RC12ECC -- went back in..

started right up -- stumbled @ 1st -- btu ran smooth after heat up

--we'll see how she does it 100miles..
