SB ~ Unusual Spring Stripes ~ AD & Dave ~ 4-28-12

SB ~ Spring Stripes with AD & Dave ~ 4-28-12

Got a call from AD that he'd be in town for a Family Emergency...and was wondering if I was headed out this weekend....
Well Yes I am....late tide 3pm

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Water 52-60
Wind – Much of it.. WNW 15-25 – switched to West – then South @ the end OF THE TRIP
Air – a very Cool 60
High @ 5:19
``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

rushed a really nice St Croix legend Blank into production for this Trip..worked on it hard all week..but had to use a different tip last minute as the silver never arrive in time... 3 rod ever-- and a favorite already..

Got to the Ramp @ 2:50 ~ I guess the suction cups on the Console storage bins need replacement as they flew off the console during the short trip …Crap everywhere but didn’t lose a thing – even had ¾ oz lead head hanging off the transom for the whole ride..thank goodness…30mph + lead + hook could have = a bad day..

While Waiting to launch..saw an old high school friend and we spoke for a few moments . A nice reunion and for a brief moment....it made me feel very young again.

….AD running a 1/2 late.
Launched the boat and waited @ the Dock...Q&A day: Must have answered a 100 Questions in that ½ hour..which a certainly don't mind...but this was the best exchange:
– got back to the boat after parking the truck and there is a 7yr old kid and his Fam there catching Mussels..
he says”I kicked a cell phone into the water” (a moment of panic @ first as I thought he meant my cell phone...but it was his Dads)
then the Father asked “how deep is here?” –
“8.3 ft ...but more importantly the water is only 51-52 degrees and the tide is ripping...if you thinking about retrieving that cell phone. Forget it, as soon it hit the water it was toast.” I replied...he changed his mind very quickly...
While I am engaged with the father his little son jumps onto my boat...— I quickly explain the further danger and boat etiquette to the young fellow and he disembarked quickly. Not the 1st time a kid has just jumped aboard while docked.Finger I am becoming less amazed by it and more concerned about launching solo..

in between the Q&A-- decided to Tried out the New Rod while I waited ..2nd cast I hooked with a 22” Striper … sweet – that’s never happened before….countless times I have casted there testing rods while waiting…never a touch. It’s Always great start when you can catch fish less than 2 minutes into a trip.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ad & Dave finally showed and off we went. Haven’t fished with Ad in a year +

Wind was already kickin’ in our faces and never really slowed down all day.
Unlike the wind fishing started off very slow. Poked around again to places I had fish last weekend. Nothing happening.

Took until just after High tide to get into a few fish – had a pretty good bite going for about an hour until the water temp dropped and so did the fish.
Weed were really a problem today because of the wind..

Ad picked up a bass with the most interrupted striped I have ever seen.. very cool fish. Dave snagged a log while I hooked a nice keeper..fish didn’t really put a fight – I guess because the temps dropped below 55.

Kept @ it for a few more hours but really never had much action…
shortly after sunset…found a pile of very, very small fish hitting all of us like a Machine gun ( weaks?) – probably not – but never did hook one to confirm.

Wind picked up even more….time to call it a night.
done @ 8:44pm

Stopped in and had Pizza and BS from this trips of seasons past, present & future for dinner…..yum for both.

Another great Spring trip ~

------------------------------------------------------------------
Total:
1 keeper Striper (28.75”)
1 Crazy Stripe Striper (26”)
12+ Short Stripers ( 15-27”)
Many Many missed bite - lost count
tons of weeds- enough salad for all..
-------------------------------------------------------------------
- Got my Crookhaven Town parking sticker in the AM ~ $25 for 2years and so it begins...I bet in 2 years it will be $60..
- Power Pro super 8 faded after only 2 trips...still a great line but it will be nearly white by the end of the season @ this rate.

Can't wait til next time..AKA Saturday..

1st Keeper 2012 ~~~ 4-21-12

1st Keeper 2012 ~~~ 4-21-12

after having a few bass last week I was amped up all week for Saturday...Just hoped the fish show up a little stronger than last trip.. which they should..

to the ramp @ 10am (water 2-3 degrees warmer..)
------------------
Water - 53-60
Wind Ssw @ 15-25 ( Many Gusts )
Air 65-70
High Noon
------------------
Poked around for an Hour until I Broke the ice @ 11 am when I snagged a 17" bass as he bumped the lure..gave it 2 more drifts but nada..

Made a change and Decided to check out some new spots...
4-5 new spots nada..
.. Found one that looked really promising...5-6 casts in .. saw some bait swim..
Had nice hit.. Nice fish on... Drag zinging and really got the new custom rogue rod bent hard for the 1st time ~ really nice.
27.875"... Almost had my 1st keeper 2012..

about an hour later, found some more bait and had another keeper size fish follow right to the boat...I was just reeling in fast to re-cast..when he shoot out of the dark and did a drive by...I let out a big WHOA..casted back up to where he was as a drifted away..2 more quick casts and I had a nice bite and hooked into a nice 27"..

Good to see a Bigger fish around.....just had a feeling I would get that keeper today...
Took me 3 more hours, many casts and picking through 7-8 small bass...
But I hooked into a really healthy 32" Bass... great fight. Drag on the New Shimano Stradic(loaded with the new PP super Shades was set a little light - but I could change it during the fight..
cranked him in as fast as I could - made some nice runs and I got a chance to test out my larger fore grip I made for such a situation...a really nice addition on light rod. worked great when the fish came in close and went under the boat.. ran me a round the deck until I could hand grab that bucket mouth....quick measure and pict...swam him a for a bit until he was ready to go which wasn't long in the cold water....bite down on my hand and ZOOM shot of like a rocket.. 1st keeper of 2012 - earliest I ever had a Keeper.

Bite really died around 2:30 - should of left earlier...but I love scouting this time of year with Minimal traffic..no other hits - the wind really picked..

Done @ 4pm ...

got stuck behind a very small craft on the way back in barely making way against the tide and wind...

---------------------------------------------------------
Total:
1 Keeper Bass ( 31.875")
1 Just Shy Bass ( 27.875")
13 Schoolie Bass ( 15-27") Most 16-17" - only a few other nice sized fish 25", 26", 27".
15-20 missed bites Bumps
1 Follow the boat by keeper sized fish.
-------------------------------------------------------
- Expected it be overcast all day -- but it was BRIGHT sun..although the nasty wind kept it very cool.
- Ospreys diving on fish
- nice to see schools of bait.
- added a few shots from winter drawings..
- Fantastic 2nd boat trip..

use only 1 lure the whole trip...pretty beat after 15 fish..PINKY!

SHAKE DOWN CRUISE 2012 + Early Bass ~~~~ 4-16-12

After hooking up with my 1st bass yesterday with the Yak.

Couldn't wait to do the shakedown cruise this year..

in years past the it was 3 or so trips of just cruising no fish around yet..but this year I had a good shot @ fish + the Cruise..

to the water @ 7:20am

1st time towing with my new rig..did very well.. but the aftermarket under slung hitch is lower that the old truck by an 1" -- seemed to make launching easier..
--------------------------------------------
Air ~ BEAU-T-FUL Day ~ 60 in the am ---75+ by Noon..smelled like summer
Wind ~ SW @ 10-15 + Breezy - gusty @ times - kept me nice and cool in the VEry bright sun
Water - 50 @ the ramp AM...56-57
High ~ 8:30am
-----------------------------------------------
Started right up - under way 7:30.

Ramp water still cool upon arrival but much warmer than past years @ this time.
Everything still very brown...The water is ultra crystal clear..so much so, I was raising the motor because the bottom looked so close ..but it was 5 ft+ of water...

began to poke around looking for Bass...or Bait.. not much on the bait front from what I could mark or see – I could see it was going to be one those search casting days... 1000 casts per hit.

I was right... took about 100 casts before I had my first bite and fish (17”) – picked up on an opposite the wind cast..for a slower presentation..... good to break the ice and get the stink on the lure..

didn't take long to get another micro bass (10-20 casts later )– had a 15” ..

10 more casts missed bite...another 30 casts another missed bump ...then nada for the next 1-2 hours..
Boat was Drifting perfectly too...perfect speed..

Made a big move to spot I rarely fish...1st pass..Had a hit ...then another – following the lure.. and another...very little...followed it back to the boat – a school of micros taking Flashing runs at it..
casted back up and hook another micro.. 15”

a few more drifts by for nada.....went for the Cruise portion after that.... stopped when I marked some fish in a deeper part of the Bay – but no touches.
Cruised on ...headed for port @ 1pm.. to Fix the Trailer rollers

took me about 1 hr to do 2 of the three rollers...I think this 1st time in 8+yrs that all three are functioning @ the same time...probably not for long...
Fixed the Trailer lights and Transducer bracket as well so far...Bow light is non functioning again ( ever season this thing gives me trouble) other than that shakedown went well - had one opps moment of the day when I ran into the very edge of the lift gate glass while it was up.. Put a huge gash in my sunglass lens..saving my eye..lucky me..$worth the $ 10 glasses.. Popeye for real....

99% ready to go for the Season
-------------------------------------
Total:
3 Short Bass ( 17”, 15” 15”)
5-6 missed hits
2 new Trailer rollers
1 new transducer bracket
1 new triple trailer light
--------------------------------------
can't wait till the Birds start diving and screaming...

Striper Opener ~ 1st Bass 2012 ~ Yak ~ 4-15-12

Striper Opener ~ 1st Bass 2012 ~ Yak ~ 4-15-12

I always fish the opener but have never actually caught any fish on opening day because the water is still too cold...

Well not this year – I knew I had a shot due to this 20 something days early spring we are having..
forecast for AM rain never happened...but the 70+ degrees did... beautiful day..
Now only if the fish would cooperate...

Missed the AM Time...
So I just spent the day Getting the Yak together as well as worked on the boat and organized my gear and rigged a few rods.. 1st time I really cleaned the YAK since I bought it ( '0Shades looks brand new..

to the water @ 5pmish...

Air 72
Water mid 50s'? – DF> said 60.3 when it settled down – but I am pretty sure this is off..
Wind SW @ 15
h @ 8

paddled in and immediately grabbed my brand new rod that I built over the winter … my 1st I ever built ...matched with the redesigned Stradic slung underneath.... Could Not WAIT to get this thing wet...
I usually have good luck each spring when I 1st using a brand new rod for the first time...
maybe that trend will continue...

after I was done shaking down the Yak and the New rod I set off to search for some early Bass...

hit about 8 spots and it took 2 + hrs but I finally got a HIT and landed a small fry 14-15” Bass on the 1st hit...unfortunately that little sucker knocked my new outfit in the drink... It got wet alright...Grabbed it right out .. but man I really Hate dunking a new reel on the 1st outting.. or any time...

had a few more hits ...but that was it..
Didn’t really care that I missed a few more fish.. = just so glad to catch a bass on the Opener for the 1st time

done @ 8:30

nice sunset .. Warm night – even with the stiff breeze..

Total:
1 – Opener Mirco Bass ( 14-15”)
2 missed hits
Few weeds n mud..

Have a Great 2012 Season..

didnt want to give the days back @ work - So I decided to try for LI Trout for the 1st Time....

Went to the Carmans River... what a Beautiful place. buy a $3 fishing permit ( have to have the NY STATE Freash lic as well) and you can DRIVE through the woods to differnt locations.. pretty cool
Took All Day 8:30-4pm but I caught a few Trout
1 Rainbow @ 11-12"
1 NATIVE Brook Trout @ 11"

I tryed Fly fishing - but most of the good spots were taken by NOON. managed to raise one fish and had a Nice Rainbow hook up but he came off..

1st LI Trout ~~~ 4-13-12

I was supposed to be in MD this weekend fishing the rivers for TROUT - and the Suskie for Stripes.
but my friends bailed out a few weeks ago.
I wasn't about to give the days back @ work -( going non stop @ work since October) So I decided to try for LI Trout for the 1st Time....So quickly put together a 5wt Fly rod outfit + the UL outfit..

Hit one our Local Rivers for the 1st time... what a Beautiful place.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Air - 48 - 60
Water - Cold 49-50?
Wind - West 10-15 -- chsnged to SW by afternoon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

pretty chilly in the AM
on the water by 8:40ish..
not many anglers @ 1st..

decided to scout with the UL spinning rod 1st..

little gnats? flying every where.. not much foliage on any of the plants.. still pretty brown all around.

waded in to get a lay of the land... took me a while but found a promising looking tree over hang,,, 1st cast put the lure right were I wanted .... Had a trout follow it all the way out from his hiding spot and flash @ it...no hook up...but What a great sight. lost the lure on the 2nd cast -- broke it off.. oh well..

10 am? moved down river ... ran into a great Fly rodder - watched him hook into a Nice fish..Brown?
Spoke to him after... gave me so Nice tips for about 20-30 min.. back @ it and 10 min later I nailed my 1st evet LI TROUT - Sweet 11-12" Rainbow.. Beautiful Fish.. Never left the water popped out right after posing for the pict..

moved back up river...
@ about noon... had a sweetwater surprise..
got hammered by a Native Brook Trout.. My 1st brookie ever...popped off and gently laid in my hand under water for 1 shot then shot off after that..

2 min later Had another fish hit do aerial and break off - small maybe 8"

1pm Switch to the FLY
raised 1 fish
and had a nice Rainbow on for about 6 seconds...but popped off as I put too much pressure on the line due to over excitement...

called it quits as the wind was screaming in my face out of the south @ 4pm..

A great DAY.. couldnt have asked for a better 1st LI Trout trip
-----------------------------------------------------
Total:
1 Rainbow @ 11-12"
1 NATIVE Brook Trout @ 11"
-----------------------------------------------------
- saw a little fish sitting in the river next to me, sat still enough to get an under water shot of him...showed it to DEC rep.. said it looked like a "Darter"..see below.
-Got home @ 5 - just enough time to fix the trailer lights..

Good to be back ~Have a Great Spring..

Sat was rainy ! very rainy.. had everything ready for the Spring tune up of the NEW DF90A - its 1st spring tune for me.
Pre-ordered over the winter - buying NEW extra bolts,plugs and gaskets was a great idea

2nd: Battery install

cranked right up... big smoke blast and she purred to life

3rd changed the Oil & Filter

4th Change and torque the spark plugs

5th Fix the shaky Cowl/hood cover - should have done this sooner..

got it all done just before the rain started again..
